If it was the jackass that originally painted it then yes.

But it's usually not the same jackass that originally painted it.

Though they share the same name, the earlier jackass painted that picture under different conditions, responding to different stimuli and restrictions (as well as liberties), and was preoccupied by ideas and themes at the time that are far removed from this older jackass who suddenly thinks he knows better.
Maybe he does- but he is not the same young buck that created it. Time and exposure to other art and artists over the decades has changed him.

Privileged elder statesman Sir Ridley Scott, who has lost relevancy and now follows trends, is not the same Ridley Scott who was young, lean, hungry and set trends.

I don't want the former going anywhere near the latter's work. But studios and fans are eager to let him, because they think his 201X era judgement should be allowed to (literally) color his 1970/80/90's works.

If the jackass who originally painted it changed his mind decades later, then yes, I would have to agree that I have a problem with it. Personally, I think once the negative is finished, you're done. The way that the negative projected from a fresh print under optimum conditions looks and sounds should be the reference going forward. That's the film. If you want to present an ALTERNATE cut with a remix, I'm OK with that, but if it was originally in mono, then lossless mono should be a present option on the disc. There are are variances that you have to allow for in distribution (projection multi-track stereo mixes remixed in 5.1, etc), but that's different from outright changes applied to the whole thing. But I'm a jack-off who lives with his parents, not a filmmaker who's devoted his whole life to it, so I feel like an armchair moralist.

Sometimes I wonder if 14 year old me would recognize me now....

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

DVD-era masters weren't 'correct' either, they were far too magenta. It seems like home video is going to try to look its best according to the current TV technology instead of matching what we think 35mm prints looked like back in the theater.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

Given how 35mm is dead and the next generation won't have seen it in cinemas, it's not surprising. Unless you're talking someone like Scorsese or Spielberg, most directors probably have very little interest in going back to ensure that it emulates that look. Plus Cronenberg is one of the members of the "film is dead" party, so it's not likely a priority for him.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

Very eloquently stated, Paul and hanshotfirst1138. I also wonder if my 14-year-old self would recognize my current self and wonder if all my 'education' in these lines over all these years had just been some poppycock and falderal.

But, it *is* important! Revisionism (AKA 'tealification') is getting far, far too out of hand. And, very few have the balls to acknowledge it and fervently state that it is a Very Bad Thing (tm).

It is the rampant egoism / money-as-king and 'perception of modernity' that seems to trounce correctness in preserving the art of film as it was originally seen in 35mm in theatres.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

I wonder if folks would support a revisionist Man of Steel that has highly saturated colors.

It would probably improve the movie, but it's not like that was applied later or something, it had the same aesthetic when it was shown at the cinema. I'd rather they release a version of it with a decent screenplay.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

I've reviewed Cemetery Without Crosses and Contamination, if anyone's been waiting with baited breath for my thoughts.

Arrow just announced on Facebook that they're issuing a Blu-ray release of Deep Red from a shiny, new 4K scan, and my head exploded. It's not coming to the U.S., but I'm importing the hell out of this one. Two cuts and a soundtrack CD!

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

Impressive October lineup. I wish they could release it all over here but I'll be importing the UK only releases.

Let me guess, the HR Trilogy will likely be region locked, correct?

Hopefully I'll finally be able to get rid of my HDTV rips for Hellraiser 2 and 3

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

Interesting that at least one of the special features from Immoral Tales have been cut from the UK release and different content substituted.

Happy that I have the UK disc now- even though the material is censored.

Adam, in case you are interested, James White made some comments here about the state of the materials for A Cemetery Without Crosses : http://arrowvideodeck.blogspot.com.a...storation.html

The majority of the article is about Nightmare City though.
