While that's certainly the case for many "director's cuts," there have also been plenty of examples where the theatrical version of a movie was compromised due to studio meddling or the need to hit a specific running time or MPAA rating, and the DC is a legitimate improvement: Blade Runner, Brazil, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, etc.
Others, like this movie, often feel bloated.

The final act (after The Chief gets his) is very well done.
It flows together beautifully, although I prefer the Fire from Above ending.

A word on the A/V quality....
The video often looks superb, although nasty amounts of grain in the lighter areas can be found on long shots (ie, the gunship attack from the sea).
Audio also is often excellent (for its age), particularly dialog...the opening with Jim Morrison singing is overwhelming.

Anyone else hear a pop or blip in the sound at the 2:05:49 mark of the Theatrical Cut 4k disc? I am playing it on a Panasonic UB820 with latest firmware 1.60. I first heard it on my speakers through a Denon 3808CI AV Receiver, so I removed the receiver from the equation and also heard it when I played it directly to my tv speakers.
I guess it's an issue with the branching? So far that is the only repeatable audio glitch I have encountered. I do not hear it during that same scene on the Redux version 4k (same disc that has the theatrical cut).

Bump
After ripping all three cuts to my Plex server (All with Dolby Vision intact, all direct from disc, so a whopping 202GB for effectively one film), I sat down and watched the Final cut this morning. I enjoyed it (as much as one can 'enjoy' this bleak film). I have not seen the other two cuts in nearly 20 years, so my memory of them is foggy at best. But I liked this version well enough, and felt it all came together quite well. I'm going to make the time to watch the other two versions 'soon' and then maybe I'll delete all but the one version I expect to re-watch in the future. We'll see
