Can't believe it took Lionsgate this long. And still no sign of Stargate!

I never actually got around to picking up T2 on Blu-ray, so I'm in for this for sure.

T2 has to be up there for a lot of people on most double dips and format upgrades

And we still don't have a proper DVD or Blu-ray copy of Abyss. Fucking hell, James Cameron. Fucking. Hell.

Maybe it's just the overseas version, but I thought the limited edition was also supposed to have a 3D disc.

That was my thought as well, along with True Lies! Glad he has enough time to sit through a million different transfers of T2 and put his stamp on them though.

Looks like it's just the UK version for now. Bummer.

I agree that it's bullshit that FOX has all but ignored putting out BD releases for The Abyss and True Lies. Do they really think there is no demand for them?

Yet, T2 gets a bazillion DVD, BD and now a 4K release from Lionsgate.

So much wasted time. Now Cameron is going to be busy for the next several years on the Avatar sequels.

Those are 2 movies that I'm sure most of the cast and crew would be more than willing to talk about now. I hope they don't wait too long and Arnold is senile or in a nursing home and won't remember a damn thing about True Lies.

As for T2, I think I owned 2 copies of the DVD at one point (one with the steel slip cover and the other had a Cameron/Wisher commentary) and I have the one BD that's out now.

I have 2 copies on dvd, and both bluray releases, I might as well add one more. Plus make it to the theater to see it on the big screen a couple of times. True Lies hasn't gotten released because of politics, but its shouldn't matter at this point. That cover is kind of funny because no such shot exists in the movie and its clearly been photoshoped.

It is in the movie, just enhanced. Its the "trust me" shot before Arnold goes to 'take care of the police' at Cyberdyne

I should have been more specific, Arnold wasn't holding his shotgun in that scene, that's what I was referring to in saying its a photoshoped cover.

I never bothered with the VHS version of T2.

At the time when T2 was first released on home video, I was briefly into laserdiscs and picked up a T2 version in widescreen. (IIRC, there was another laserdisc version of T2 in fullscreen).

re: Terminator 2 4K UHD - 12/26/2017

I don't believe T2 was released for purchase upon its initial release date. It had a sell-through price of $99.99 or more -- that's how much video stores paid for it and that's how much the average person would have had to have paid for it if they wanted to own it. I didn't get into LD's until the Fall of '96. I had T2 special edition on LD, as well.

Ha, there's a thread for sell-through VHS:

I can't recall where I heard it but he didn't like terrorism aspect of the movie.

That might be the reason that there was never a sequel.

re: Terminator 2 4K UHD - 12/26/2017

I believe he had said on multiple occasions he didn't feel comfortable and that he thought it would be inappropriate to film a sequel after 9/11. Last I heard, back in 2010, he was working on remastered copies of both True Lies and The Abyss but they would be released eventually. There is a thread on here about this.

James Cameron is probably the busiest director in Hollywood that rarely releases anything.

Dan 07-19-17 02:39 PM

re: Terminator 2 4K UHD - 12/26/2017

True Lies... I mean... I get it. If he really has soured on it (if such statements are indeed true), then yeah... I get why he wouldn't want to be involved in a re-release, and it puts Fox in a shitty place because they probably need his involvement (contractually) to release the damn thing. I wouldn't personally add it to my collection, but LOTS of people would.

But The Abyss? No. There's no legitimate reason to be stuck with a non-anamorphic DVD released in the year 2000. There have been DVD re-issues along the way, changing nothing but the artwork it seems, but it's still the same shitty encode that it always was.

So what is it about The Abyss that has made James Cameron avoid a proper DVD or Blu-ray? Is there something in the film that he dislikes as much as he (allegedly) dislikes True Lies? I just don't get it...

Anyway, thank goodness for yet another home video release of T2 to go along with the 3D post-conversion of T2 hitting theatres. If there's anything we needed, it's a reminder that the Terminator franchise exists and that there were two good movies.

Alan Smithee 07-19-17 08:27 PM

re: Terminator 2 4K UHD - 12/26/2017

I have True Lies on D-VHS, with DTS sound :) Also have T2 on that format, have it on 8mm tape and at least 5 different laserdisc editions and the 2-sided special edition DVD. Totally burned out on that movie but will still buy the 3D conversion.

There's never been a good version of The Abyss out on any format though.

re: Terminator 2 4K UHD - 12/26/2017

It would be pretty much impossible to release True Lies on BD without Cameron. If Cameron isn't involved in a release, chances are Arnold won't want to be involved either. They are joined at the hip.

I'm sure FOX could do a BD remaster themselves and release it barebones. I don't think Cameron owns the rights to the film. Usually the studio does. But without Cameron's involvement in any extras, it's almost pointless. Same with Arnold. They need both of them.

I don't suppose it's also coming to BD? This is a 4K exclusive, am I right? And why is it so hard to get T1 with the mono?

I'm pretty sure Cameron's company (Lightstorm Entertainment) owns the copyright to True Lies.

The Abyss is probably my favorite Cameron flick. It disgusts me that there still isn't a proper release available in 2017! Starz aired a pretty nice looking HD version a couple years ago so I know there's at least a somewhat decent transfer out there.

But as long as we get the 37th release of T2, I guess it's all good.

It has a blu ray copy too (presumably sourced from the same 4k remaster), which prob will store all the extras. & usually Lions Gate doesn't charge up the ass for 4kUHD

I believe Cameron has it written into his contracts that he must approve any new video masters for his movies.

Screw extras. Most of the people who buy movies buy them for the movie.

I saw an interview with Eliza Dushku about four or five years ago (I think it was the Nerdist show on BBC America...which according to IMDB would make it 2013) where she said she had just filmed some extras segments for the forthcoming True Lies release. Clearly it should be out any day now.

Doesn't that basically mean they just need Cameron to sign his name on some legal document to be filed away?

Make the new transfer, show Cameron a few scenes from it, and have his ass sign the form. Hell, worst case, show him the transfer of the whole movie. We're talking a maximum of 2 hours of his Royal Highness' time!

I think it's more probable that Dushko, and all of us, are dead before either film is released again.

the way ive always understood the wording on say criterion booklets for transfers. Approved means they watched the movie (or saw a few scenes) & gave their thumbs up & supervised means they are actually there giving notes and what not during the restoration/scan

That's not the way James Cameron works. He's going to want to adjust the entire movie frame-by-frame to his current liking. He'd rather the movie be stuck with an old non-anamorphic Laserdisc master (which he supervised back in the day) than sign off on something he didn't micro-manage every detail of.

I hope these hollywood idiots aren't giving directors/producers that kind of control anymore. I'll be glad when dinosaurs like Cameron fuck off and die.
