Well, it's very tempered good news. So far, the UHD versions are streaming only (not download) and only work on Vizio Reference series televisions or 4K Roku set-top boxes.

UV has always been streaming only. Warner codes have been UV-only with no option for an iTunes download for some time now. I don't expect to see any UHD downloads for codes unless it's Vidity. Then that would be good news if a Vidity code came with the movie.

You're right. I totally forgot about that. I do have a WD media player with a hard drive and some vudu movies on it. I would assume you can do the same when UHD isn't exclusive to the ROKU 4 anymore.

I won't buy any 3D movies in 2D, period. However if a 2D movie gets released as a UHD/BD combo, that's what I'll buy so I can have the better version when I'm equipped for it.

What bugs me is that regardless of what I buy I'm paying for stuff that will never get used. All I want is the 3D and 4K disc.

Under most circumstances:

Blu-ray comes with an extra dvd and digital copy
3D Blu-ray comes with an extra Blu-ray and/or dvd with digital copy
4K comes with an extra Blu-ray.

That's significant cost and waste IMO.

You won't buy any movie shot in 3D in 2D, or you won't buy any movie released in 3D in 2D? I found most post-conversions to be a waste of time.

Released in 3D on their first run (ones done years later for disc like Predator don't count)- I wish they didn't do post-conversions, but they do so that's part of the movie. The 2D versions of converted movies still include the 3D conversion credits. Some of them do look very good, but they really should just shoot real 3D- they did it in the 50s, they can do it now.

I just wish there was a 3D disc option as well. It would really make things easier for those of us buying them. I guess the writing is on the wall for 3D though.

Wow. $47.99 each? Paramount tends to overprice Trek anyway, but close to $50 is a little ridiculous, no?

Lionsgate's The Last Witch Hunter and Sicario each have an MSRP of $42.99, but they're basically thirty bucks everywhere you look. It wouldn't surprise me if the two Trek flicks run a little north of thirty in practice (maybe even $35/$36?), but they definitely won't be pushing fifty from anywhere we'd shop.

There's some noise that Disney will release Star Wars the Force Awakens on UHD BD in November. I'm a little skeptical though.

These are probably limited enough releases that it makes sense to charge a little extra since the volume is much lower. Unless you go into Tower Records, you won't be paying full price.

What's the timeline for when "good" hardware (TV/players) will be available for consumers at sub-$1000 prices? I hear that 2017 seems to be a good year to buy. I'm holding out until then.

I've saved a significant amount of money not converting my DVD library to Blu-ray since 4K was (relatively speaking) around the corner.
