Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

IIRC Blu-rays were priced very high compared to DVDs when they first came out too. If a lot of people buy 4K players, the volume of discs will go up, and prices will go down.

When movies like 2001, Blade Runner, Lawrence of Arabia, etc are available on 4K discs, I'll look at players. The Abrams Star Trek movies and The Last Witch Hunter are not enticing in the slightest. Most movies I own I will keep on Blu-ray, and only upgrade a few titles that I love enough to want in the highest possible quality.

Also maybe by then I'll have a 4K TV.

Edit: It looks like 4K players are already below $400 on Amazon, including some below $200. Are those actually for 4K discs or are they for upsampling Blu-rays?

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Which in my mind doesn't help the format - asking more than 28 bucks for turkeys like "Pan" and "God's of Egypt" is laughable
Especially since those are supposed to be in 3D! (I saw a free theater showing of Gods of Egypt and thought it was OK, I'll be buying it on 3D BR but could care less about 4K if it's only in 2D.)

The first Blu-Rays were around $30 each but prices went down. I saw Ghostbusters 1 and 2 in 4K listed for $36.99 each, good luck selling many of those.

$30 in 2006 adjusted for inflation is really close to $37. Remember that this is the MSRP too. How many Sony UHD BDs are actually going for $36.99 on Amazon?

I do wish that Lionsgate's tiered pricing, where their catalog titles are a good bit less expensive, were standard practice. An early adopter tax is never any fun, even if this is the way it always goes.

4K 3D doesn't really exist.

Upscaling. Hurray for market confusion! I think the list of true UHD BD players is all of two deep, and I don't think the Panny is even out yet.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I think the catalog UHD should be lower priced, at least $5 less (or $20-25 street). Also, they don't need the BD included, so that should help with their costs. I think most people who buy a catalog will already have the movie on BD anyway. The future-proofing should be for new release only.

Oblivion would be a pretty good title for 4K.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Universal is going to start releasing UHD BDs this summer.

Among the first titles are Everest, Lucy, and Lone Survivor. Jason Bourne, The Huntsman: Winter's War, and Warcraft will hit UHD BD later this year. No mention of Oblivian, but I'm sure it's coming here too.

Hopefully they'll release the first 3 Bourne movies as well, since it's getting a reboot.

It's not really a reboot, since it's a continuation of the first 3 movies. It's not like The Amazing Spiderman, where we see the origin story again.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

What will be the oldest in production film be released on the format? Who can tell?
The coverarts for Ghostbusters 1984 and 1989 look shoddy as f*ck. Where's STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan? The Blu-ray cover looks complete naff.

I'm assuming Lucy will have it's Stateside release of the Atmos mix that's already on the Hong Kong import edition - hmmm, depending on the price, I might bite.

with the trend of not including a 3D disc, I'm pretty sure Everest will be a combo release [UHD / BD] that's too bad as the 3D was damn impressive.

Including a 3D disc would bump the MSRP towards $20 USD more though.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Revenant was completely sold out at both local Targets/Best Buys. I had to order from Amazon.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Yeah, it was sold out at Target and I got the last copy at Best Buy.

Was there just fewer of them out there for some reason, or is there a bigger demand for 4K discs currently than I realized?

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I did an in store pickup for Revenant at my local Target, but they were not able to fill the order in time. I ended up ordered it from Target online since I would pay tax at Amazon anyway, plus I get 5% Target card discount and free shipping from Target.

Could be because their really hasn't been any content for a few weeks. Only Concussion.

But has nothing to do with the lack or content the past few weeks.

And with Atmos! Not sure that kind of sound can be improved on an old movie like this, but hey, at least it's an option.

I'm pretty sure you can thank David Bowie's death for that release.

Could they have done a 4K transfer that fast?
