Re: UHD release announcements

Not really. I'd be more pissed if they released less than a handful at this point, which would tell me they have no idea what to do. At least they're sticking to their guns on the whole no 4K thing. And so far there are very few Criterions that have had 4K's released at this time.

Re: UHD release announcements

The question with "Do The Right thing" is what "color scheme" will it follow. The Universal blu-ray had "true" colors while the Criterion had the Ernest Dickerson-approved Theatrical color scheme employing red-ish filters to give the film a "hot Summer day" visual tone.

I think we've gone over this in this thread (and others), but I'd be fine with them doing a handful if they focused on titles that were restored in 4K or had original 4K masters. Nothing wrong with that, IMO. I think they've been hesitant for many reasons, some legitimate and others not, but it doesn't change that their absence in 4K gets slightly more notable every time there's a disparity.

And so far there are very few Criterions that have had 4K's released at this time.
Yes, it's a few, but I think all of these (off the top of my head) are notable:
Do The Right Thing
Crash
Parasite
The Elephant Man
Don't Look Now
Breathless
Le Cercle Rouge
The Princess Bride
Ran (maybe doesn't really count since CC lost rights before a BD release, and I think whoever was releasing it on 4K had an indefinite delay?)

Plus, some are available in 4K digitally/streaming (again, off the top of my head)
The Irishman (4K on Netflix, but not on disc)
Marriage Story (4K on Netflix, but not on disc)
Roma (4K on Netflix, but not on disc)
Nashville
Silence of the Lambs
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Hulu has it, but I don't know if it's 4K or not. Actually, seems like nobody has this in 4K yet, despite it being shot in 8K. Seems ripe for 4K disc treatment, IMO)

A few more: Dr. Strangelove, La haine, Pan's Labyrinth.

As you mentioned, Ran looked like it was going to happen, although nothing's materialized (AFAIK). Ditto for the original War of the Worlds. The Killers and Videodrome have been announced/teased as well.

I haven't seen this confirmed through an authoritative source, but supposedly Neon isn't licensing out UHD rights. I'm baffled that it hasn't gotten a UHD release anywhere the world over either.

Might have to upgrade Total Recall since itís only $15. Not my favorite Schwarzenegger film, but still an enjoyable one.

And when they finally do 4k they'll probably cheap out and not do BD100 discs like they should, and they'll still only be one disc so the extras compromise the encode of the main feature.

They were probably to coincide with the theatrical release of 'Coming 2 America' which was originally supposed to happen in August.

Re: UHD release announcements

And on the Paramount tip, it looks like The Ten Commandments is getting a UHD release at the end of March ó just in time for Easter.

Iím always thrilled when large format films get the 4K treatment, and with as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as its BD release was, this should really be something special.

Oh yeah! I watch this religiously every Easter, even when ABC shows this on TV. I'll pick it up Day 1.

That was one of those early "shot on digital" films that a lot of filmmakers were shooting (Spike Lee's "Bamboozled" was another), and I remember that it looked much better to me on DVD, -sharper, I suppose, -than it did in the theater.

For three men the Civil War wasn’t hell… it was practice! By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever made, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a classic actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Screen legend Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars) returns as “The Man with No Name,” this time teaming with two gunslingers to pursue a cache of $200,000 and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold hard close-ups, exceptional camerawork captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape and the hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Hailed as “the best directed movie of all time” by Quentin Tarantino, this epic masterpiece was directed by the great Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in the West) and co-stars Lee Van Cleef (For a Few Dollars More) as Angel Eyes and Eli Wallach (The Magnificent Seven) in the role of Tuco. Music by legendary composer Ennio Morricone (Death Rides a Horse).

Sigh. This should be the most exciting announcement of the year, but instead I look forward to the inevitable dumpster fire that this will surely turn out to be!

Re: UHD release announcements

From the other site, per a Kino rep:

”Neither HDR or Dolby Vision.”

“The UHD-SDR 179-Minute Extended master received over 30 hours of extensive shot-by-shot color grading. We wouldn't have spent the money or time if we were going to release the overly yellow grade.

What we said, was we looked into doing a new restoration and creating a new HDR Dolby Vision master, but the potential costs were too high and we would've never recouped. We decided to drop the release, but a few month ago we decided we'll go ahead with the release, fixing the colors on the otherwise beautiful UHD-SDR master.

The Blu-ray disc is also newly authored, some of the extras on the previous release had encoding issues and we fixed it for this new release.”

Re: UHD release announcements

I think the best path to a Dollars trilogy set would be if MGM were to do the heavy lifting, as they have with the likes of Platoon, Silence of the Lambs, The Princess Bride, and Spaceballs (which KLSC is taking advantage of). And the project overall might be more viable now than it seemed a few years back when KLSC was first exploring it, given that there was literally one UHD BD from a U.S. boutique label on the market at the time (and it was theirs!).
