Confirms the April 5 release date.

I'm not sure if this is worth it. Sounds like this stuff will be on the "we all know it's coming" new trilogy set or Saga set.

Details
Only at Target: Collectible packaging, plus 20 minutes of exclusive bonus content, including a never-before-seen interview with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, and a deeper look at the movie’s weaponry.

Looks like some kind of fold out packaging. Kinda cool.

I was hoping they had learned from Paramount's mistake with the Star Trek Into Darkness fiasco but the lure of retailer cash was too strong to resist.

I'll probably end up getting the Target one anyways since we get a discount with the Red card.

With the fold-out digipak, it would appear that there probably won't be a bonus disc in a paper envelope; it's still possible that there could be a third tray on the digipak, or the 20 minute featurette will be on the main disc. (Which would mean that Target is getting their own run of specially-pressed blu-rays for this release.)

Or it could be a digital download code.

Until it's confirmed, it's a roll of the dice with Target.

At this point, probably not. With the details revealed so far, any hint of a 3D release would probably be a big deal and would have been leaked.

I don't think it's a digipak, I think it's a cardboard sleeve. Notice a little hole on the left side of the Kylo Ren panel.

I'll be getting this Day 1. Probably the Target version.

Looks like there's a decent amount of bonus content.

Guess JJ didn't have time to record a commentary track.

I will definitely pick up the 3D version, but I wonder how Disney will handle it. Will it be a combo pack or 3D only, like the Oz release in the United States? I'm sure that will get cleared up soon.

In addition to the above special features, certain retailers will have extra content available with their Blu-ray Combo Packs:

TARGET – The Target Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray Combo Pack comes with exclusive packaging and an added 20 minutes of bonus content, including never-before-seen interviews with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega and a deeper look at the movie’s costumes and weaponry

WALMART – The Walmart Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray Combo Pack comes with exclusive BB-8 packaging and an exclusive Star Wars Galactic Connexions trading disc

BEST BUY – The Best Buy Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray Combo Pack features exclusive SteelBook Packaging

Here’s the package artwork for the three (We’re gonna need Walmart’s):
What is a "Star Wars Galactic Connexions trading disc?"

Also, looks like the BB steelbook is a 3-discer.

Also, the sticker on the Target edition says "Only at Target: Collectible Packaging + Exclusive Bonus Content. See inside for details." Doesn't say if it's a disc or code, would "see inside for details" imply a code?

I'm guessing we'll see some kind of exclusive for Rogue One. Possibly a 3D scene of it. And hopefully a nicer 3D package.

Love the front and interior of the steelbook but whoever chose Phasma for the back should be kicked in the balls - should have been Han or Rey, not the single most disappointing character in the film.

I had a gift certificate for BB so I pre-ordered the steelbook. I wish they had put anyone other than Phasma on the back though.

Don't the other SW steelbooks have the movie posters on the backs?

Should have used the poster art to keep it consistent.

The other steelbooks are Fox releases. Disney probably doesn't care about consistency with those releases.

Are the Target and Walmart exclusives just slip covers over the normal art?

The BB-8 one looks great but if its just a slip cover, :(

Hailey G 03-03-16 01:53 PM

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016

I'm conflicted on this. I'd kinda like the steelbook, just because I have the other steebooks (I actually didn't think I'd ever buy the current blu's but the Google Express deal where they could be had for under 4 bucks each got me) but I locked in a pre-order of the standard release when Target had it for 19.99 with a $5 giftcard. Hard to justify the steelbook at a net $15 upcharge from where I'm at with my existing pre-order. Lame that BB isn't even giving you enough RZ points for a $5 cert with the pre-order, that might be enough to swing me.

Not sure about the Walmart one, but the Target exclusive appears to be entirely different packaging.

Many speculate that since they refer to it as a 3D "version" it will be digital only.

I don't care much for packaging these days, I'll probably just buy it wherever is cheapest and if they're all the same, whatever is more convenient.

That looks like those special packaging with the hidden magnets that Warner put out for certain catalog titles (Diamond Luxe Editions) and they used for the Best-Buy exclusive of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I'd prefer that over the ugly Steelbook.

But of course, I'd prefer a 3D version over all others.

Well, there's no reason to delay the 3D release if it's a physical copy either.

Except to give 3D another kick in the balls, when this could've been the boost it needed. Since they've just stated "later this year" they'll probably eventually just say "Due to lack of interest the 3D release has been postponed indefinitely." I hate Disney.

Like I said earlier, if they plan on including promo stuff for Rogue One, possibly a scene in 3D, then that's a good reason to delay. Or even promo material for Episode VIII. We have a new Star Wars movie coming out every year for the next few years. Adding exclusive material to the 3D set would spark a small rise in sales.

I don't think it'd make too much sense to actually announce that a 3D is coming, then just cancel it. Disney/Lucasfilm knows there will be enough interest to release it. Niche yes, but people still buy it.

Decker 03-03-16 03:40 PM

They just want us to buy the Blu Ray, then re-buy the set for the 3D version later. Like we'd fall for that.

Okay, I will. But I won't be happy about it. :grumble:

Crazy thought - weren't 3D conversions of the original 6 also done at some point?

Maybe fall will be a 7 movie 3D boxset with a special feature about Rogue One.

TPM was released in 3D, and there were plans to release all 6, but only TPM ever got released. I think conversions were completed on ATOC and ROTS (and they may have been screened at Celebration, but not released wide), but I don't think the 3D conversion of the OT was ever completed.
