Re: DC Animated Universe Films

Honestly I'm hoping the film is still decent. It'd be a shame for such an iconic story featuring arguably the best voice actors for Batman and The Joker to be ruined by something so silly. Personally I don't necessarily have a huge problem with how they're portraying Barbara but I can see why some would. It is kind of an odd choice.

Just read that article too... that sounds absolutely dreadful.

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I dunno I've seen a couple reviews and most don't think it's that bad. I kind of get the feeling some people are dramatizing it more than anything.

Spoiler:
I get people being upset that Barbara's motivation for becoming Batgirl is because she wants Batman. Not really sure why the writers chose that as her motivation. The sex scene sounds a bit awkward too but it's not the first time there's been a hint at the relationship between the two.

Timm introduced that in Batman Beyond too, and it was crappy then (and I love Timm's stuff). And if you read the comic sequel to Batman Beyond where it tells the story more in depth, it's even crappier. Making that part of her origin goes a step beyond. Ugh.

Batman beyond spoilers:
Spoiler:
In Batman Beyond they establish that Bruce and Barbara had a thing when Dick left, and is one of the reasons Dick is estranged from Bruce. In the comic they expand on that, explaining that Dick came back, Barbara was already pregnant with Bruce's child, but while Bruce is telling Dick and they're fighting, some thugs beat up Batgirl and cause a miscarriage.

I mean there's tons of innuendo with Robin and his choice of first costume but I never want to see any story from DC coming up about that either.

Maybe this title will not be so hard to find after all. :(

Spoiler:
Yeah I think the main thing I take issue with is making that a part of her origin. The idea of Bruce and Barbara hooking up has been around before and it's not an idea that I love but I don't hate it either. It's just kind of weird given their age gap.

Watched the leaked version, couldn't help myself. Honestly, I liked it. Yes, the first half hour is really weak because it presents Barbara as a person who'd be clearly unfit to be Batgirl, but even that is not all bad. The scene where she comes to say her goodbyes is great, and the action sequences are great, as always.
The rest is almost a word for word adaptation, so that's great as well. Some of the additions did feel like they are trying to get a harder rating, like the occasional swearing, and people getting shot in the head, and hookers, but whatever.
They didn't use any of the transitions established in the comic, there's a post main credits sequence to give a bit more closure to Barbara's story that is meh, and Batman flat out throws one of the circus freaks into a pit of spikes, but honestly those are just nitpicks. Overall I really enjoyed it. Don't know what people are so "disgusted" about.

In the 70's when Barbara worked as a congresswoman and Dick was still in college they had something going on. It didn't bother me since they were closer in age.

That's actually the fan favorite matchup I think, even after Starfire came along and Barbara became Oracle. Heck, Teen Titans Go gets that part right. ;)

I obviously haven't seen the movie yet but I have seen the scene in question and it comes across as a fan boyish wet dream, and then that coupled with what I know happens in the rest of the story, plus all the complaints about fridging Barbara from the original story...

Saw the leaked version as well and it's a good adaptation once you get past the first 20mins with the added prologue story with Barbara. The sex scene was built up so it wasn't surprising when it happened. Still, it's unnecessary and does nothing to build on the drama later on.

Once the actual KJ story begins, it's an almost spot-on adaptation.

I take it you ordered the regular version? The steelbook listing has been sold out for awhile now.

Nope. I was able to order the steelbook. I saw it was OOS a few hours after i posted. Working nights does have *some* advantages!

Yeah, it's an utterly bizarre piece of slash fiction for the first 20 minutes. All the controversy aside (and I understand it), it adds absolutely nothing to the story. It's unnecessary and ultimately pointless. Conroy and Hamill are every bit as brilliant as you'd expect, and there's a deliciously nightmarish horror-movie flavor to some of it.

Welp, tomorrow is the day for Killing Joke steelbook at Target, everybody ready? The best I could do was get my lunchtime to go so I plan to hit a couple of targets close to my house and hope that people won't think to go there during business hours. Probably end up taking my lunch time and then some. Good luck to everybody (except the scalpers).

Remember, if anyone can find an extra SteelBook, please keep me in mind. Thanks in advance.

If I can't get the steel, I'm gonna wait it out and get the reg blu when it drops. Have so much construction around town going on all over at the same time, that I would have to get the kids up super early just to get to Target when they open that its not even worth the bother.

Mike86 08-01-16 12:36 PM

I plan on getting to Target fairly early tomorrow so hopefully I'll get one.

I won't be able to go until lunch either. I'm hoping that in store pick up is available or brickseek works.

I'm going to Target right when they open at 8 to hit up a couple stores so if I get some extras and
people need them just let me know.

T minus 14 hours until Target becomes thunderdome!

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

I'll try to get an extra copy as well, even though I rarely make it to the post office and would have to ship it Priority or something like that. Talking to the Target guy today, my store got like 8 copies. Hope I can at least get myself a copy.

Looks like the In-Store Pick Up option isn't working, though it's changed from before.

mattysemo247 08-02-16 05:37 AM

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

In store pickup is now working. Looking at Brickseek, it looks like most stores got between 3 to 7 copies.

mattysemo247 08-02-16 06:12 AM

Re: DC Animated Universe Films

And now another email saying choose another store, but no other stores are now showing available :(

Still showing copies on Brickseek, so I guess I'll buzz them when they open

Yeah, I really hope not all copies were by the In-Store option (cause all of mine are gone in my area too), at least the normal buyer has a chance at the "going to store" option. We'll see when I go at lunch...*sigh*. (Already getting disappointed).
