Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

So it was confirmed the new XBox will play UHD discs? I read all the 4k support stuff, but does that include UHD physical media?

Dan 06-14-16 02:28 PM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Yes, definitely. From the product page:
"With four times the resolution of standard HD 4k Ultra HD delivers the clearest, most realistic video possible. Stream 4k content on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video and watch Ultra HD Blu-ray movies in stunning visual fidelity with High Dynamic Range."

Also, one of the MS execs posted on twitter how he watched Deadpool on the system using the UHD disc.

Awesome, glad I pre-ordered. Thanks for clarifying.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

 glad to help.

I'm still on the fence on whether or not to pick one up myself. I don't really want the 2TB version, but there's no official release date for the 500GB or 1TB. I might buy in when August rolls around. We'll see.

Regardless, I think this kind of move might be one of the major driving forces behind any sort of UHD disc adoption. I went to best buy today and the number of titles is definitely going up, but the only UHD player they have is the Samsung, which is on the other side of the store, practically hidden in a corner. That thing (or this Xbox One S) should be front and center, right in front of all the UHD movies.

I'll wait for the PS4 Neo - didn't they also say that it would have 4k, too?

Dan 06-14-16 05:05 PM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

A "Neo" will not be $299, though. It's expected to be a major hardware upgrade, whereas this isn't.

It's smart to wait until there's more info on the Neo, though.

That's the rumor, although it's likely going to cost more, maybe $399 or higher, and it's not likely to be released before October.

This article based on a developer document states that the Neo will only support 50GB discs, but that may be in reference to game discs, which have to be backwards compatible with the PS4.

Ah. I also hear that "Scorpio" is the new next-gen system from X-Box? Also 4k compliant?

Yes, it should do everything the XB1 S can do and more, but it's not due out until 2017.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Yeah, the Xbox One S announcement surprised me, but I don't follow the gaming rumors too closely.

Can all games be played without subscribing to Xbox Live? I was planning on replacing my PS4 with the new 4K model, but I suppose this is a better option if it opens up some games that I didn't have access to before.

Why So Blu? 06-14-16 06:06 PM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I just saw on Amazon that the release date for the $299 X-Box S is December of this year, so for those that want to save that extra $100 then you'll have to wait 6 months.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

That's a typical place holder date. Nobody releases new hardware on new years eve.

Bet on September or October.

Online multiplayer requires Xbox Live Gold, including multiplayer-only games like Overwatch. That's the only real limitation.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

It's extremely early yet, but Amazon lists a UHD / 3D BD combo for the 2016 spin on Ghostbusters. Maybe this will be a thing after all!

E Unit 07-07-16 09:17 AM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Or at least for Sony. Still, I'm glad Angry Birds won't be the lone title should Ghostbusters pan out.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

While I still won't be in any hurry to buy into 4K as long as it doesn't support 3D, I'd rather have the markets for these two combined than compete against each other (and have 2D-only 4K discs outsell 3D discs). As long as they still release those separately, I make an effort to buy the 3D the week it's released to show which one I'm voting for if I can't have both.

So there might be a quality control issue with the UHD BD of Man of Steel. Looks like they left some special features completely off according to my friend who already got his studio screener. I think the BD forum at that other site imploded, as well. It's a quality control issue, no doubt.

I'm not sure what a "100.00 cable" is, but the HDMI 2.0 standard didn't change the cables at all. If they're of a good enough quality, they should be able to handle the extra bandwidth.

So it's a price, like $100.00 ? It gets confusing not using the dollar sign when referring to technology, since numbers can refer to versions or model numbers as well.

yea sorry

Ok so I have it all set up. I thought VUDU would at least let me buy 4K on this but I don't see the option. Can I buy and stream any 4K from this player?

I assume it's the UBD-K8500.
http://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-ubd-k8500/

You can use the K8500 to get 4K streams from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Video and M-Go. On the other hand, its Vudu app lacks 4K support (currently exclusive to the Roku 4), there's no UltraFlix app (Samsung's 4K TVs have one) and the M-Go app didn't recognize the hard drive full of downloaded 4K/HDR movies we attached.

E Unit 07-21-16 05:10 PM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

If you want to buy 4K from Vudu, you need to via computer. Then you'll be able to stream from your Samsung. But the player widgets are rather limited.

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like Jay's comments confirm you can't stream in 4K with the Samsung.

No, you don't need gold-plated cables or even the official "Premium HDMI Certified" cables. All you need is a High Speed HDMI cable.

ok thanks for the info guys. Now I need to go grab a few movies. I hear The Revenant looks great ( i thought it looked fantastic at the theater) and I hear Sicario is good as well

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

With regard to the HDMI cable, some displays have been showing difficulty with 4K Blu-ray using older HDMI cables over 25ft long. That would be the only time I would advise trying a more expensive cable.

Astonishingly, it's been confirmed today that the newly-announced PlayStation 4 Pro (coming November 10th) will not have Ultra HD Blu-ray support, unlike the recently released Xbox One S and Xbox's forthcoming Scorpio.

Sony talked up UHD streaming, but as far as 4K media goes, that's it.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I wonder if not having UHD capability will affect sales. So they're putting all their eggs in one basket by assuming gamers will go digital only. Lame move, but we'll see. Nice job Sony ditching to format you created.

Well it would only be "digital only" for 4k movies. It'll still have a regular BD player, so it can still play 1080p movies and deliver 1080p and 4k games via a disc.

It might be because UHD-BR would add too much to the production costs of the console and push the sticker price above the $400 they were aiming for.

I would think game manufacturers would love to ditch physical media and go online distribution only. It would kill the used market, eliminate manufacturing and distribution costs, prevent trading games, and give them full control over everything.

There's probably also an assumption that the type of people who are going to buy the PS4P are the types who have ditched physical media for watching movies, so there's not benefit for them to include a UHD-BR player.

Except MS managed to put a UHD-BD player in their $300 Xbox One S. the same price as the base PS4.

...or to make it easier for Sony to push their UHD streaming/downloads. Or a little from Column A and a little from Column B. I really don't know.

I still have one preordered, but this definitely did surprise me, especially from a console with "Pro" in the name that's 4K this and 4K that.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

A little surprised at this. They should at least have offered a model with UHD BD playback, but there not doing so certainly confirms their indifference towards a format that they helped create and their ambitions to get consumer to transition to Digital HD.

Now ironically Microsoft will be playing the Trojan Horse role for UHD BD. Never would have seen that coming.

milo bloom 09-08-16 09:24 AM

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

That's very surprising about the PS4.

We've been reassessing our household video game systems and we'd recently been thinking that the PS3 will be the last Sony device for us (sticking to Nintendo consoles/handhelds and the PC for Steam). Had the PS4 Pro included a UHD drive, that might have nudged us back that way but the lack of it seals the deal for sure. (And we've never been an Xbox home, so that's out too.)

And as for upgrading to UHD in general, I still have tons of both Blurays and DVDs that we've never watched. I just don't see bothering with a new format (unless there's a killer title, I mean it would have to be the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy type of release) at this point in time.

Maybe if my Bluray player were to die in the next couple years and a UHD player (that could also play Blu and DVD) were at a good price I'd probably get a player and then watch for cheap UHD titles here and there.
