How long until BTTF and Jurassic Park are released in 8K?

You had to have been around in 99 to appreciate that question. Every new member started by asking the same question.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

On the Netflix front, they have a few 4K titles available for streaming. Most are Sony, and include the following:

Lawrence of Arabia
Hitch
My Best Friend's Wedding
Jerry McQuire
Bad Asses on the Bayou (yea?)
The Patriot

And the spate of TV shows, including:

The Blacklist
Long more
Breaking Bad
House of Cards
Chef's Table
Marco Polo
Sense8
Grace and Frankie
Daredevil

I just hope they put up some non-Sony movies up. And I'm guessing we won't see many shows ever hit UHD blu. I'm hoping a decent amount of movies will see the full 4K treatment.

I have to admit, if it's not quite up to par with Blu-ray, some 1080 streaming I've seen (particularly Vudu), looks pretty damned impressive, in some cases good enough that laymen would probably find it as good as BD.

Ultra HD Blu-ray is at least a few months off, so don't sweat that. Your TV will upconvert your regular Blu-ray discs. You could get a Blu-ray player that'll handle the upconversion, but I bet you'll be happy with what your TV does.

Ok so I have read and it looks like the HDMI I use for my 3D should be fine for the 4K. Anything you all suggest I buy with it? Im going with a 55in Samsung

I'm using a 60-inch (not 4k) TV right now and that looks too small now- my next one will hopefully be at least 80 inches.

I have a 64". It's a nice talking point, though there are occasional jokes about me compensating for somethings.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I have directv and they say they need to come out to "install" 4K? Does this sound right? They said I have the correct box and my tv is "Netflix" verified

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Does DirectTV have a set top box that can provide 4K? I'm guessing they mean changing that out. Saying stuff like Netflix verified sounds like they're running a scam. And I had to upgrade my Netflix subscription to the $11.99 tier to get the 4K option.

I upgraded the Netflix and it looks great. When I went to download the Directv app it wouldn't let me and said to call them so I guess I do. Odd.

Maybe a dumb question but shouldn't it tell me if the picture is being upscaled. ESPN will still show 1080i. Is upscale something I need to turn on. Reading manual and looking but can't see anything

Ok I guess this is a direct issue and things will upscale when they update it replace the receiver?

model LG 65UF7700

I'm not sure if there's a menu function that says a picture is being upscaled. I just hit my info button to check resolution, like this:

Mine is a 58" panasonic Viera from 2007. I should get 2 - 5 more years out of it. I was just thinking the other day what I would replace it with. A bigger screen for movies would be nice but for regular TV might be too much if I went 65" or more. I'm about 10' eyeball to screen

It shows 2160 on Netflix but even normal HD is 1080i. Maybe it's my non 4K directv receiver. They are installing a 4k genie today

Yeah, that's the limitation of the cable box. In this picture, I'm streaming straight to the TV via the Netflix widget. If your TV has widgets, you can connect that way at 4K.

Ok yes I get 2160 with Netflix. I'll wait and see when I get the 4K box. Thanks for the help

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Do I need a 4K Blu Ray upscaler or just wait for normal 4K blu ray

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

I've pondered that, and I'm guessing the blu's that look spectacular will look a bit better unconverted. But at this point, I'm just waiting until the 4K players come out - and the prices come down on the hardware.

How many other veterans like me are fascinated by the utter lack of excitement for this new format?

I remember back in the early days of DVD, forums like this were on fire with comments and questions, Bluray was a little less but there was still excitement for the format but now it's just a handful of people watching as a curiosity.

This will be the fourth major consumer home video format in the last 35 years. At a certain point fatigue starts to set in. Add in the lack of content and the the cost of actually utilizing the technology to its fullest extent and that leaves very little to get excited about. If I had a high-end projector setup (and I hope to one day) I would be more excited, but even then I just can't imagine the content will be there. At least not the sort of content that I'm interested in.

edit: I should say it's the fifth major home video format in 35 years (if you include LD, which I do.)

I acknowledge the lack of excitement , but it seems so "well, of course hardly anyone cares!" that I can't say I find it fascinating.
