Definitely in for this one at some point.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

WELCOME TO THE 30th (give or take) MONDO MACABRO NEWSLETTER!

It's the 30th (ish) MM newsletter!

It will be brief. We're super busy.

But we wanted to let you know about something.

What?

Why, the ANNUAL HALLOWEEN SALE of course!

Were you nervous? Did you think we'd forgotten about you?

Fear not! Below are some of the preliminary details about the sale and what's in it.

But it's not everything! We'll be revealing more TOP SECRET new limited editions next week!

So be on the lookout for the 2nd part of the 30th (see what we mean by "ish"?) newsletter next week.

Now about that sale ...

THE HALLOWEEN SALE, 2025 EDITION!
As all the old timer Mondo-heads will be aware we do a big sale every year around the end of October. So of course it's called the HALLOWEEN sale! But if you are new here (and welcome!) you may be wondering if you order during the sale, will it be avaible to watch on Halloween?

The answer is of course "sorry, no". We just call it the Halloween Sale because it happens around Halloween and we do it then to get in ahead of the other, richer labels and their Black Friday sales. Simple. So despair not. You can save any of this stuff for next Halloween! And the stuff you buy during next year's Halloween Sale you can save for Halloween 2027 and onward unto infinity ...

But back to this year's sale. When exactly is it happening? What exactly is happening? Where is it happening? Where am I? Who am I? What's the meaning of existence?

WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHY
The Halloween Sale '25 will begin on Thursday, October 30th at 9 AM Pacific/12 Noon Eastern (google what time that is where you live), ONLY at mondomacabro.bigcartel.com!

The sale will continue through Monday, November 3rd and end sometime early in the morning on Tuesday, November 4th.

Both ahead of the sale, and immediately following it, the big cartel site will be down for "maintenance". Please don't freak out. Especially ahead of the sale, it will be up at 9 on the dot. But do give us a week or two following the sale for the site to go back up.

There will be discounts on basically everything in our back catalog, really only excluding some of the most recent in stock LEs. Older LEs still in stock will get a discount, as will ALL standard editions. Even recent ones will get a teensy bit knocked off the top. Some older releases will be as much as 50% of the MSRP, or more, depending on how old they are.

Also, there will be a slight discount on shipping fees for back catalog items. It won't be much, but there will be some, but be aware there will be a general raising of prices for shipping happening after the sale into next year. This stuff just gets more and more expensive every year for us, and A LOT more in the last year.

In addition to all of the above (and the new LE pre-orders, more on that below) we will have the final copies of some releases that are going OOP ...

Yes, these four titles are now OOP and we are down to the final copies. IT'S NOTHING MAMA will likely be around for a while yet, as we have several hundred copies still in stock.

But PERVERSTION STORY, PRIVATE VICES PUBLIC VIRTUES, and SUDDENLY IN THE DARK are coming down to the wire with only around 100 copies left of each. SUDDENLY has a lovely new edition out on the market from our friends at Terror Vision, and we're sure someone will do PERVERSION again, but MAMA and PVPV seem unlikely to get new releases from anyone else, so if you want these movies, best invest in them now!

Also going OOP are the DVD editions of THE WIFE KILLER and TANGO OF PERVERSION. We have the last 25 (!) copies of the former and while we have a bunch still of the latter it won't be around forever. The good news is that both will upgraded to Blu sometime in the next year or two. But both will be on sale for CHEAP. So get 'em now and if you like 'em, pick up the Blu when it arrives.

But now on to what you've been waiting for, new limited editions! There will be FIVE new releases, with SIX films! Below we'll detail the first two, and we'll reveal the next three in a sequel newsletter published next week just ahead of the sale!

But for now, here are the two that can be revealed ...

**FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT**

First up is the uncanny 70s Eurohorror classic THE DEVIL’S NIGHTMARE, making its worldwide 4K debut in a new restoration from the recently discovered original camera negative!

A busload of tourists on holiday discover that they are going on an unscheduled trip… a trip into the macabre. They find themselves lost and in need of food and shelter. A gloomy castle ahead seems to be the refuge that have been seeking. What they don’t know is that Baron von Runberg, the castle’s owner, lives under an ancient family curse – one that will draw the unsuspecting guests into a terrifying game of death. As they enjoy a splendid meal at the Baron’s table, a beautiful stranger arrives at the castle. And the nightmare begins...

This delirious exercise in Gothic sex and horror is one of the very few such films to come from Belgium and stars the great Erika Blanc, the diva of 1960s and 70s Eurohorror, together with Shirley Corrigan (Crimes of the Black Cat), Jean Servais (Rififi) and Daniel Emilfork.

**2nd ANNOUNCEMENT**

Next up is a wild Blu-ray double bill featuring two stone cold classics of Indonesian trash-horror!

MYSTICS IN BALI and QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC!

MYSTICS IN BALI (1981)

In the mystic east, they like their films up front and gory. This Indonesian creature feature will leave western viewers stunned with its audacious plot and outrageous shock scenes.

A young American woman on holiday in Bali becomes fascinated by tales of the local black magic cult known as the Leyak. She seeks out a Leyak witch and attempts to learn her secrets.

Needless to say, it all goes horribly wrong...

Be warned - you've never seen a film like this before!

QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC (1981)
This was one of the first Asian horror movies to be widely released on video in the US. Its crazy special effects and wild gore sequences were unique at the time and are still eye-opening today.

The story is set in the exotic countryside of far-off Indonesia. A wedding ceremony goes dreadfully wrong and the groom suspects black magic. He seeks out the woman he believes is responsible and she is hurled to her death over a high cliff.

She is rescued from the dark jungle by a strange hermit. He tells her that she must seek revenge. They accused her of black magic - now she must learn to use that magic against them and become Queen of Evil.

Both films are making their worldwide HD debut!

And we're not even done yet!

So, see you next week for more reveals!

Take care, stay safe, stay sane and watch MONDO MACABRO movies!

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

WELCOME TO THE 30th (and then some) MONDO MACABRO NEWSLETTER!

Yes, we're back again! After only a few days! Don't you feel blessed? You totally should. Hearing from Mondo Macabro twice in less than one week - it's a rare and beautiful experience.

But enough of this dribble! Let's get on with our purpose here: to finish off the announcements for the 2025 HALLOWEEN SALE!

If you can recall, last time we spoke (so to speak) we laid out the ins and outs of the sale. When - Oct 30th at 9 AM Pacific (that's TOMORROW by the way). Where - the Mondo Macabro Big Cartel site. What - a big discount on basically everything, including shipping fees + 5 new LE releases on pre-order. Why - because we love you.

And then we gave you the first two of those new LEs - DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE on UHD, and a 2-disc BD set of MYSTICS IN BALI and QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC.

But that was only the beginning! Now we're back with the rest of those announcements! Three more mind-blowers for the faithful.

And now ... onwards MM soldiers! Let's celebrate the victories of the season and physical media with the full details of those three incredible limited editions!

**THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT**

Our third HALLOWEEN SALE title is the crazy 60s Eurohorror/Drive-in staple ISLAND OF THE DOOMED aka ISLAND OF THE DEAD aka MANEASTER OF HYDRA!

A group of tourists arrive to see the botanical gardens on a small island off the coast of Spain. The only inhabitants of the island are the famous botanist Baron von Weser and his two faithful servants; all of the other residents fled after a series of mysterious deaths. When the car driven by the tourists’ guide hits one of the baron’s servants, von Weser explains that the death was due to a rare and incurable disease, not the accident. That night, the guide and Cora Robinson, one of the guests, are found murdered with all the blood drained from their bodies… Is there a serial killer at large, or is it something even more dangerous?

**FOURTH ANNOUNCEMENT**

Next up is an upgrade of a DVD from the early days of Mondo Macabro, one that’s been out of print for many years now - an un-nerving 90s American indie film take on Filipino folk-horror, ASWANG aka THE UNEARTHING!

This amazing gorefest was the first horror film ever screened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it caused a sensation in 1994. ASWANG was immediately picked up for US distribution, retitled THE UNEARTHING and cut for an 'R' rating. After a brief theatrical release, nervous video chains refused to carry the film, and the shocker all but disappeared.

A pregnant girl enters into a strange pact, agreeing to play the part of someone else's wife. She is taken to a huge, isolated estate to give birth.

What happens next will haunt your nightmares for years…

**FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT**

At least we reach the end of our HALLOWEEN SALE announcements! And we saved the best for last! When we first released Paul Naschy’s unsettling horror-drama INQUISITION we were only able to publish the HD master that was given to us by the licensor, and even then we felt it wasn’t quite up to market standards. Fast forward 8 years and we have been given access to the original negative to do a spankin’ new 4K restoration, which we will now unleash upon the world in this beautiful new UHD limited edition, a first anywhere in the world!

In 16th century France, Inquisitor and magistrate Bernard de Fossey (Paul Naschy) travels to the plague-ridden region of Peyriac in search of witches and devil worshipers. Local beauty Catherine (Daniela Giordano) quickly catches his eye, tormenting him with impure thoughts, although her affections lie with her handsome fiancé Jean. Meanwhile, embittered one-eyed manservant Rénover (Antonio Iranzo) presents Bernard with his first group of torture victims when he accuses several sexy young things who spurned his advances of being witches responsible for the plague.

One by one beautiful women are tortured on the rack then burned at the stake. No-one seems able to halt the Inquisition's reign of terror or the baseless accusations that cause so many innocent deaths. When Jean dies in mysterious circumstances, Catherine allies herself with Satan to get revenge on her enemies - foremost among them, De Fossey himself.

This was horror star Paul Naschy's directorial debut and one of his very best films. He plays three roles - Inquisitor De Fossey, the Devil, and the Grim Reaper. The film is a brutal and unrelenting portrait of a past when superstition and terror ruled the land.

DISC FEATURES
2160p presentation taken from a new 4K restoration of the original camera negative

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

Saturday update:

Happy day after Halloween! Are you sad the holiday is over??

Well fret not, because the Mondo Macabro Halloween Sale goes on!

And here's another stock update!

MYSTICS/QUEEN is now 92% sold out. We do expect to completely sell through on this on at some point this weekend. Act accordingly.

The only other title in danger is ISLAND OF THE DOOMED at 81% sold out. We will likely make it through the sale on this one (unless there is a sudden run on it). But it won't last much longer after that, we expect.

All the other new titles still have plenty of copies.

Bonus round - as of this post, there are only *2 copies* left of both the LEs for SEX APOCALYPSE (which has the exclusive bonus disc with the "hard cut" of the film) and FATA MORGANA.

Who will get those final copies???

Anyway, happy hunting! We'll see you tomorrow for another update!

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

WELCOME TO THE 31st MONDO MACABRO NEWSLETTER!

So, how you guys been? Have nice holidays? Things in the world are kind of crazy right now, huh?

Oh, what? You don't want to talk about any of that?

Where are your Halloween pre-orders? Is THAT what you want to talk about?

OK, I suppose if we have to, we have to ...

"YES, WHERE'S MY #%*@!& HALLOWEEN ORDER?!?!?"
Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Yes, the Halloween orders are late. Much later than we would like.

Basically, they've been a freaking nightmare. Two of the biggest issues we've ever faced. One, an issue with a restoration, the other with a disc that had already been manufactured.

BUT. Both problems are fixed now. But, but ... we lost weeks to these issues.

Add to that a few logistical issues regarding packaging. Also now solved but didn't help things move any faster.

So we are behind. We won't be making that January shipping start we had announced and hoped for.

But we are still hopeful that it will begin in February. At least some titles, if not the full bundle. It's possible that won't begin until March.

So many apologies (again). But please understand the delays are necessary in order to get these things right. I think you'll agree that it's better to be late and correct than on time and needing replacement discs down the road.

Keep an eye on our social media pages and on the big cartel site for more updates as we get closer to finally getting everything finished and out the door.
OK, OK, FINE. BUT WHAT ELSE YOU GOT?
Yes, well, now that that's out of the way, we can talk about more fun things. Like what's coming next, and later this year!

You'll be happy to know that now the Halloween titles are all done, we've started working on the next batch of titles!

That's right, no rest for the macabro!

And in fact, though things may change, we currently are working towards having our first pre-orders of 2026 by late February or early March (yes, likely before all the Halloween orders are fully sent out)!

And unless something changes (always possible), we will have FOUR new releases, with 5 films!

Are we crazy? Probably. But we just have this enormously rich backlog of films that we are incredibly excited to share with you. So, we're going to start off with a bang!

In fact, on our social media recently, we already announced two of those films. The first one is ...

THE BLOOD ROSE!
Yeah, "another upgrade". But we really love this film, and we are excited to bring it back to the US as our DVD has been OOP for many years. (Also just FYI, we have a metric ton of new-to-disc films this year so no worries about us giving you something you don't already own in some format or another, see below).

THE BLOOD ROSE is a dreamy, erotic EYES WITHOUT A FACE/AWFUL DR ORLOFF riff that drifts off into a fantastique realm nearer to the uncanny work of Jean Rollin or GIRL SLAVES OF MORGANA LE FAY. It's prime 70s French erotic horror directed by MM favorite Claude Mulot, who also made SINS OF THE FLESH. We could not be more hyped to have you rediscover this weird little bloom in the darkness.

And it will be in 4K! We'll be offering both UHD and Blu-ray options for buying this film in the limited editions. That's right, for the first time, we'll be offering two separate LEs of a film at the same time - A UHD with an exclusive high-quality slipcover as well as a red case Blu. Both editions will have the same special features.

Alongside this release we'll also have this new-to-disc gem ...

MORBO!
MORBO is an unsettling and unusual 70s Spanish thriller directed by Gonzalo Suárez. It's about a couple spending their honeymoon camping in the middle of nowhere when odd things begin to happen. We might liken it to the vibes of the great Australian film LONG WEEKEND, but it's its own beast to be sure.

This review by Letterboxd user Lencho of the Apes probably describes it best -

"A horror movie about... vague anxiety, a ghost story with no ghosts. Extremely placid, but it slyly, insidiously, creates its atmosphere through skillful manipulation of ambiguous POV film-grammar; everything about the little clearing in the forest where this young couple are vacationing is gradually imbued with menace. The trees are a threat, the stream is a threat, their little campsite -- car, trailer, some scattered lawn furniture -- becomes quietly terrifying."

This movie is quite something else and we are thrilled to give it its US home video debut!

It will go on sale alongside THE BLOOD ROSE and two other, as yet un-announced titles sometime in February or March.

What are those two other titles? Well, one is another double feature of incredible Greek exploitation films and the other one is ... well, something very different is all we can say. Another disc debut, but something unlike anything we've released before but still squarely a "Mondo Macabro" type of film. That's all you'll get out of us at this point!

But what else do we have this year? Well, we can reveal a few more things coming soon-ish, and for that we need to take a trip around the world, to Asia!

HONG KONG HORROR COMES TO THE MONDO MACABRO COLLECTION!

2026 is the year that we FINALLY bring Hong Kong horror movies into the Mondo Macabro collection! (If it can be a big deal that something enters the "Criterion Collection" it can be a big deal to enter ours as well!)

We've wanted to do horror films from this area and from a particular era (the late 70s and early 80s) for a long time now, basically since the beginning, and now we have not one, not even two, but three films lined up this year!

The first we announced previously, it's the absolutely wild BLACK MAGIC WITH BUDDHA and we'll be bringing to UHD and Blu-ray later this year. The new 4K restoration is still being worked on and we're still working on extras but it will be worth the wait! Look for it late spring or early summer.

Also, we couldn't be more excited to reveal the 2nd Hong Kong film we have, which couldn't be more different from the above. It's Lau Shing Hon's brilliant "new wave" erotic horror film HOUSE OF THE LUTE! A truly unusual movie that in some ways prefigures the CAT III shockers of the 90s but has more in common with the works of Ann Hui (see THE SECRET) or Patrick Tam (see LOVE MASSACRE) than it does with anything starring Amy Yip or Anthony Wong (great as those films are).

We're working with a new 2K restoration of the film, and several brand new extras are in production now. We hope to have this one out late summer or early fall.

And there's still another one! But that will have to wait ...

And we're not done with Asia yet!

So, next we're heading to wilds of Pakistan!

LIVING CORPSE & HELL'S GROUND!
Yes, we have two films finally returning to the fold. LIVING CORPSE has been on DVD for ages but we're very pleased to finally be upgrading it to HD this year. A new 4K restoration from the only existing 35mm film element is in the works. A creepy and joyous bit of horror fun made in 1967, LIVING COPRSE is inspired by the Hammer Dracula films but with its own particular South Asian twist.

And we'll be pairing that with a film that's been wandering in the wilderness for too long! It's the first ever original Mondo Macabro production HELL'S GROUND! Directed by longtime MM friend and collaborator (and discoverer of LIVING CORPSE) Omar Ali Khan in 2007, HELL'S GROUND is noted as Pakistan's "first gore film" and it was hugely controversial in its home country. But the film is a total riot and we think you'll love having it in your collection.

The DVD of this film came out from a different company and has been OOP for several years now. But we're bringing it back and in HD! Omar will be involved in the extras for this one, as well as with LIVING CORPSE, and they'll be part of a single LE package, something like the MYSTICS IN BALI/QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC set from this past Halloween.

The current plan is for it to be available for 2026's Halloween Sale in late October. If that does happen, it will probably be late. I mean, why even deny it at this point??
WE'VE REACHED THE END
Of this newsletter. Finally! We do go on a bit, don't we?

Anyway, to sum up, Halloween titles are late (sorry) but should begin shipping by the end of February, and then into March.

Also, we've got a bunch of great stuff coming up this year, including something like 12 or 13 (at least) new-to-disc films as well as a handful of HD upgrades.

We hope you'll stick with us, even through the collapse of western civilization. At least you can enjoy that collapse with weird movies!

And with that, farewell for now!

Mondo Macabro heads back to sunny Greece for a double bill disc featuring another pair of wild exploitation obscurities!

LUST IN THE SWAMPS!

Directed by Grigoris Grigoriou; Greece 1966, 92 minutes. 1.37:1

The stunning Zeta Apostolou plays Marianna in this raw and uncompromising Greek thriller set in an alien landscape of deserted backroads and perilous swamplands. She and her partner, Petros, have left the city with a haul of jewels and cash and are now driving at stop speed towards… neither of them really knows what, just that this unknown future has to be better than the past they are now escaping from.

Marianna tricks Petros into taking a rest while she drives. When she is certain he is asleep, she stops the car and quietly makes off with a large steel box that was in the car’s trunk. She hides it in the swamp but gets lost trying to find her way back. She collapses from exhaustion but is rescued by a local hunter who caries her to the isolated farm where he lives with his brother and stepsister. Marianna’s arrival upsets the fragile equilibrium of this strange household and soon the brothers are at war with each other, both trying to claim Marianna as their own. Meanwhile, Petros is looking for Marianna. And he has a gun…

X-rated when it played in London’s grindhouse cinemas in the 1960s, Lust in the Swamps has been more or less forgotten since. But this powerful, violent and sex driven drama still packs a punch and is a showcase for Zeta Apostolou’s performance as the tough and fiercely independent Marianna.

SECRET OF SINFUL ATHENS!

Directed by Kostas Karagiannis; Greece 1966, 92 mins. 1.37:1

Kostas, a handsome, suave and ambitious country boy comes to sinful Athens and starts working in a nightclub owned by the ruthless gangster known only as “One-Arm”. Kostas soon rises to the top and becomes a valued member of One-Arm’s crew. He also becomes the lover of Suzy, the club’s platinum blonde nightclub singer/ stripper… and occasional freelance sex worker.

Kostas is a hero in the small town where he was born and he likes to turn up there in a white sports car with the scantily clad Suzy as his passenger. His aim is always to impress – and if possible work some side hustles as he does so.

One-Arm sets Kostas the task of seducing an older woman whose husband is a hugely successful business magnate. The seduction is successful and the gang take some red hot snaps of the action, blackmailing the woman to buy the photos or have them sent to her husband. Unfortunately Kostas has overreached himself this time and the scam falls apart . Seeing this as their chance to get rid of him, One-Arm’s gang (and Suzy) decide to teach Kostas a lesson he won’t forget. But things very soon spiral out of control.

Films don’t get much wilder than this one – the bizarre French satirical phantasmagoria MARQUIS, making it’s US Blu-ray debut!
Directed by Henri Xhonneux; France/Belgium 1989, 93 minutes. I.66:1
Imprisoned in the Bastille for a minor act of blasphemy, the Marquis navigates lust, censorship, and the chaos of pre-revolutionary France. Through his wild imagination, he escapes into scandalous tales he writes down on scraps of paper. But the idea of a real escape begins to take shape when his cellmates start planning their breakout to join the revolutionary movement beyond the Bastille walls.
This truly astonishing film – loosely based on the life of the notorious Marquis de Sade – is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The characters in the story are all animals: dogs, cows, hens, rats etc. But this is not animation. The cast are played by real actors in specially created life-sized heads of whichever animal they are portraying: the Marquis is a cheery spaniel, the naive Justine is a heifer, the dominatrix Juliette is a mare and the head of the notorious Bastille prison is a sexually rapacious cockerel.
And, as though that wasn’t enough, the Marquis’ constant companion in his grim prison cell is his oversized talking penis, which pops out of his trousers to hold long conversations with him about the state of the world.
Visually wild and totally unhinged, this underground cult classic is not for the faint of heart.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

From the latest newsletter:

2026 AND BEYOND
So that's it for now. But know that this is just the start of a stellar year for Mondo Macabro. We have more amazing films coming, every single one of them being new to US releases.

Yes, you read that correctly. As of right now, our entire remaining slate consists of nothing but films that have never been released in the US before. Not just new-to-disc or new-to-HD, never before released at all in the United States of America.

Maybe there is hope for our country after all.

We plan on getting the next batch out by the middle to end of the summer, and the final batch for the Halloween Sale (which we are going to try and get out before the end of the year, and not wait until 2027).

What's in that next batch? You won't know until we are ready to put them on sale but I can give you some hints here, if only geographic/temporal ones: We'll have one 70s Spanish film and one 80s French one. So far, par for the course for MM. But then it gets weird: We have an incredible double bill of films from the former Yugoslavia and then going even further afield for the final title, a truly insane film from a post-Soviet era Uzbekistan. That's right, our first Central Asian film! Mondo Macabo knows what the kids are clamoring for, and it's 90s Uzbek artsploitation cinema.

So get ready.

And for Halloween? Finally - finally - get ready for our big Hong Kong horror splash.

And then after that? Who knows, you can never tell, and you can only expect the unexpected.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

^ I’m probably overreaching by a country mile here, but following up the announcement of an upcoming Hong Kong horror title with the phrase “expect the unexpected” – coincidentally (?) the name of a Hong Kong crime movie produced (and essentially directed) by Johnnie To – made me immediately think of INTRUDER (1997), a bleak horror thriller produced by To that I’ve mentioned and recommended several times over the years here, and one that earns its Category III stripes making it a good fit for Mondo. It was nominally directed by Tsang Kan-cheong, who was much better known as a screenwriter of hit popcorn movies – including To’s CASINO RAIDERS II and ROYAL SCOUNDREL (both 1991) – and because it’s his only directorial credit, I’ve long suspected that To did most of the work on this early Milkyway production while tossing a credit bone to someone who helped him prior to his ‘style’ fully coalescing. Could be wrong, but it would be nice to finally upgrade that one from VCD, which I think might be the only format it exists on.

The ‘intruder’ of the title is from mainland China and the movie was released about six months after the handover, so the political allegory hits like a sledgehammer and ultimately proved prescient, something the usual experts and historians could certainly explore in bonus features.
