Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU
Kinda figured. But, because it’s unlikely to ever be seen again outside of video versions, which exist for the first two films, there’s little reason not to at least get those versions subtitled (finally!) and slap them on the disc as bonus features with the warning that they are what they are, and their inclusion is solely to present the whole story. I know that would offend purists who’ve been spoiled by the efforts of these boutiques and potentially thwart future (pricey) releases if elements or prints did magically turn up, but I’m assuming the odds of that are basically zero for a majority of vintage Indonesian cinema.
I skimmed through the first episode of the Mondo Macabro podcast, and the comments about The Snake Queen start around 13:30. The OCN was pulled (perhaps from Hong Kong, where many Indonesian film archives are held) and sent to the UK for remastering. When they opened the film canisters, the reels were all fused together. Just a melted mass of celluloid. I don't think they specify when this happened.
The discussion of Hungry Snake Woman specifically starts around the 40:28 mark in the podcast. A recurring topic of discussion is how many labels are mining Indonesia (Mondo Macabro, Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Terror Vision) and is making acquisitions tougher.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU
The troubling thing, at least to me, about all of that ‘mining’ is that most Indonesian cinema from that era, while undeniably cheesy and quirky, is simply not that good. It was made super-cheap for a decidedly local, lower-class audience that hadn’t yet been swayed by regional and U.S. imports. It wasn’t really designed to travel, nor was it expected to, and it largely didn’t until Mondo started cherry-picking a few gems back in the day, decades after it was largely forgotten. There’s no doubt that the few surviving films deserve preservation, but if the norm is going to be splitting up series like this one across multiple labels and/or other shenanigans, I just don’t need to see them that badly.
Of course, reading the inevitable “I’m buying it day one!!!” type comments on their social media and YouTube channels (and at places like bluray . com), I’m confident that my personal suspicions and hesitancy won’t impact their bottom lines one bit thanks to hardcore collectors who buy everything just because.

I guess it’s a case of too many labels competing for limited resources, and it seems to extend beyond Indonesian cinema.
It’s become apparent in the last year or so that Severin and Vinegar Syndrome are both working to some degree with Dark Force Entertainment on titles as well, as the VS and Severin honchos have turned up in commentaries on his newer releases and his upcoming title RIDE A WILD STUD was clearly (or very likely) acquired in the same deal that netted Severin the more ‘valuable’ MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (same director etc.), on which WILD STUD might’ve at best been a supplement in days of old, rather than a barebones standalone release. I’ll give Dark Force credit for pricing it reasonably cheap (although this may have been a recent price drop in response to a lack of interest, as I recall the initial price being considerably higher), but the sharing of titles like these kinda speaks to the ‘mining’ you mention: not only are the boutiques competing for dwindling resources in cases like Indonesian cinema, they’re (altruistically, I suppose), helping each others’ bottom lines lines by breaking up smaller, lesser troves that they unearth. For the ultimate buyers of this stuff, I think there are pros and cons once you piece together what’s going on, and the existence of the Suzzana doc and the separating of what is perhaps her most well-known trilogy speaks to that.
Maybe it’s all just a sign of the times now that so much of ‘the good stuff’ has been scooped up and released over the years. Working your way down the food chain has its disadvantages now that so many independent labels (and supplementarians) have popped up wanting a piece of the action.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU

WELCOME TO THE 26th MONDO MACABRO NEWSLETTER!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Not Christmas, not even Halloween, it's the MONDO MACABRO HALLOWEEN SALE!
This year it's happening BEFORE Halloween, so don't be confused.
And it's happening in JUST A FEW DAYS! Yikes! We hope you are ready. We hope we are ready!
But because time is limited let's cut right to the chase ...

WAIT, WHAT? THE HALLOWEEN SALE? ALREADY?
Yes! It's happening and it's about to start!
It kicks off on Tuesday, October 22 at 9 AM Pacific/12 Noon Eastern (google what time that is where you live), only at mondomacabro.bigcartel.com!
It will run through Sunday, Oct 27. The morning of the 28th the store will go down for a couple of hours and then come back up with only the pre-orders still available to purchase.
There will be major discounts on almost all of our in-print catalog, including several Limited Edition releases that we still have a lot of copies of.
Additionally, and most excitingly, we will have FOUR new LE releases for you to pre-order! Three of them UHD/BD combos with slips, and one BD-only in a red case.
PLEASE NOTE - these pre-orders will NOT ship until JANUARY 2025 at the earliest and (hopefully) February at the latest. Please don't send me emails constantly asking when this is going to ship if it's not even Jan yet, lol.
Got all that? Any questions? Email them to [email protected]!
And now onto the new announcements!
ANNOUNCEMENT #1!

First one up is something people have been absolutely BEGGING for since we released DR CALIGARI a couple of years ago. Stephen Sayadian's surreal adult masterpiece CAFE FLESH!
Truly one of the most delirious film experiences you can have, CAFE FLESH is a dystopian sci-fi oddity from one of American cinema's true underground originals.
The time: five years after a nuclear apocalypse. The survivors: post-nuke, thrill-freaks looking for a kick. Able to exist, to sense, to feel everything... but pleasure. In a world destroyed, survivors break down to those who can and those who can't. 99% are Sex Negatives; call them "erotic casualties". They want to make love, but the mere touch of another person makes them violently ill. The rest, the lucky one percent, are Sex Positives, those whose libidos escaped unscathed. After the Nuclear Kiss, the Positives remain to love, to perform; and the others can only watch - can only come to Cafe Flesh!
CAFE FLESH is a legendary film, as entertaining and surprising
today as it was when first released in the 1980s. Its unique visual style, fabulous score and provocative storyline combine to create a unique viewing experience. This release marks it's official worldwide disc debut and showcases a years-in-the-making 4K restoration!

Our 2nd big release is the utterly insane ero-guro/chambara freakout BOHACHI BUSHIDO: CODE OF THE FORGOTTEN EIGHT, directed by notorious cult director Teruo Ishii! The legendary actor Tetsuro Tanba stars as Shiro, a master swordsman who is weary of the world of samurai honor and samurai killing, and so attempts suicide rather than finishing a fight. He is saved by the Bohachi clan, a gang of pimps who have forsaken all honor and whose cynicism outruns even his own. But ultimately, he even tires of their nihilistic worldview, leading to a final showdown in the snow ...
Full of flying limbs, naked lady ninjas, drug-induced hallucinations, and cackling villains, BOHACHI BUSHIDO is one of director Ishii's most deranged and impressive spectacles. Ever since Merlin taught her his skills centuries ago, Morgana has gone on living by obtaining the souls of the young women who pass through her kingdom. ANNOUNCEMENT #4

And finally, another long in the works project, THE PUNISHMENT! We originally announced this 70s Gallic shocker more than 6 years ago! But the film went into rights-dispute-hell almost immediately after. But with some help from our good friends at Vinegar Syndrome it's all been sorted out and we could not be more proud to unleash this early example of "French Extremity" upon an unsuspecting world!
Britt (played by Karin Schubert) is a high-class Paris escort, pimped out by her older girlfriend, Francoise. After being abused by a client, Britt rebels. Well-connected vice lord Manuel takes her to a seedy hotel in Lyon in the south of France. There she is locked in an empty room and forced to take part in a series of bizarre acts inflicted on her by a procession of Manuel’s clients. Raymond, Manuel’s second in command, begins to take pity on Britt and returns to Paris with her. But events there take an even more dangerous turn and Britt and Raymond have to flee for their lives.

THE ETERNAL QUESTION - WILL THERE BE A BUNDLE??
The eternal answer - YES.
THE GREAT BEYOND
"So yeah, this Halloween Sale business is terrific and all, but what happens after that??" you may ask. And we may answer ...
Jesus, give us a break, we just gave you four new titles, three of them UHDs no less, and put our back catalog on sale! What more do you want??
"Well ... more ..." you sheepishly respond.
And indeed, there will be more. We aren't going anywhere and we have some amazing stuff lined up for 2025.
But we aren't going to talk about it now! You'll have to wait. Before the end of the year we'll send out another of these newsletters and we'll reveal some in-the-works goodies at that time.
So cool your jets, open your wallets on Oct 22, and bask in the glory that is MONDO MACABRO!
That's it! Byeeeeee.

Just ordered Girl Slaves Of Morgana Le Fay and The Blood Spattered Bride ...
Has anyone had any issues with their Canadian orders (Customs fees, delays, etc.) in the past or is it usually pretty good?

I placed a huge $383 U.S. order with them in their 2022 sale (and still haven’t watched most of the stuff!
), shipped to Toronto, and had no issues or unexpected costs getting it here. I still think it’s hit and miss, but I haven’t been had fees or duties on stuff from the U.S. (Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, and Mondo, mainly) for a few years now, knock on wood. But I’m always kinda braced for it regardless. Not sure if the odds are the same on small orders like yours, but I would think they might be safer.
I skipped (or missed?) the 2023 sale but was basically all caught up, so this year I bought a bunch of the retail/standard editions released since then (mostly $15 items) for a total of $208 U.S. I’m kinda surprised Mondo doesn’t do free shipping for larger orders like this. The shipping plus tax to my Michigan address was $26.30, while shipping to Canada was only slightly higher at $28.50, no tax, and it’s one less parcel to lie about at the border when I’m coming back.

I’ve had several parcels (some like yours with one or two discs) shipped here from the U.S. over the years via those carriers, and have rarely gotten a bill later on. I can’t remember the last time, to be honest. Hopefully there are simply too many parcels racing across the borders, and across the country, these days for them to bother too often.

Re: Mondo Macabro goes BLU
Not sure I could get away with posting the cover art for a couple of these, but...!

Going on sale Thursday, May 1st at 9 AM PST, only at mondomacabro.bigcartel.com! The wildest, most bizarre Euro-spy-adventure-sex-comedy-trash-epic-strarring-two-transgender-icons EVER! AND its sequel!
Yes, that’s right it’s EVA MAN and THE RETURN OF EVA MAN!
(and let’s hope this cover doesn’t get us banned from Facebook!)
EVA MAN (1980)
The beautiful Eva (played by Eva Robin’s) is unusual in a number of ways, not the least of them being that she was born with both male and female sexual attributes. She asks her uncle, professor Pissinger, to operate on her and remove the male parts. However, the professor is so taken with the idea of a person who can be both male and female that he refuses to perform the operation. He believes that the future of humanity would be best served by increasing the number of intersex individuals. So he creates what he calls a “sex maker” – something like a pacemaker but this time installed in the crotch area. It gives the recipient the ability to control and increase their sexual intensity. The professor believes his invention could change the world for the better, bringing about a more peaceful and balanced society. Unfortunately for him, a gang of incompetent criminals have been hired to kidnap Eva and remove the sex maker from her body, then giving it to their boss who, being impotent, believes the device will save his relationship with his wife, the glamorous but frustrated Gerda.
Eva and her friend Ajita (played by Ajita Wilson) set off in search of the criminals. But unfortunately, the gang kidnap Eva and plan to remove the sex maker… Using a sharpened axe! Eva Man is a legendary and yet little seen film. This is a global disc premier, fully restored from the original negative with many exclusive extra features, including an interview with Eva Robin’s who rose to fame after her crucial cameo in Dario Argento’s film TENEBRAE.
THE RETURN OF EVA MAN (1982)
The plot of The Return of Eva Man is very close to that of Eva Man. Whereas there was a “sex maker” device in the first film which was inserted into the groin of Eva Robin’s, in this second film, Professor Pissinger has constructed a gun which, when aimed at anyone, fills them with an uncontrollable desire to have sex… with whoever is near them at the time. Given the problems caused by the sex maker the professor decides that he will donate his new invention to the government. He believes that his “love gun” can do away with war and violence and create a peaceful and better world. Unfortunately for the professor, General Pepper, a rogue military man wants to steal the love gun to create an army of super warriors. He says: “While everybody's busy having sex, it'll be child's play for me and my troops to take over the country.”
Fortunately, Eva and Ajita are there to stop this happening and save the world.
This follow up to Eva Man was released in 1982. It was a Spanish/Italian co-production, as was the first film, but this time it was not distributed in Italy. Director and co-producer Antonio D’Agostino discovered that the Italian distributors planned to insert multiple hardcore scenes into the film. There had been some such scenes added to the Italian version of the first Eva Man. A similar thing had happened with his first film Ceremony of the Senses, and he was determined to prevent this happening again. Although the film was directed by D’Agostino, for legal reasons direction was credited to the Spanish filmmaker Zacarías Urbiola.

Mondo Macabro continues its sexy time in the sun, moving from Southwest Europe to Southeast Europe and a return to the exploitation sin-ema riches of Greece! Two rare examples of moody and weird melodramas from the military junta era of that country -
LADY DESIRE and SEXOMANIA!
LADY DESIRE (1968)
Living in self-imposed exile, hiding from the rest of the world in her eerily vacant Athens mansion, Christina, an affluent, sad-eyed heiress, is shocked to discover that an audacious burglar has stolen her precious collection of jewelry and family heirlooms. To get to the bottom of this challenging case, the inquisitive local police commander decides to dig deep into the opaque past of the cryptic young woman, following half-baked leads and half-truths. As the experienced officer tries to connect the dots, unexpected discoveries about Christina’s personal life come to light. However, Christina is a hard nut to crack, and the commander has no other choice but to resort to unconventional methods to shed light on the mysterious robbery. Now, it is up to Lieutenant Dimitris to help find the truth. Can he crack the case?
Produced by the controversial Greek-American filmmaker James Paris, the film’s Greek title was Katigoro to kormi mou (I Blame My Body) and as that title suggests, is a steamy, sex-based melodrama about a young woman whose passionate, and often destructive, love affairs fill her with guilt and conflicted emotions. Superbly handled by Errikos Andreou, one of the best young directors of the time, the film was widely exported. This is its first appearance on home video and is a global Blu-ray premiere.
SEXOMANIA (1974)
Concerned for the mental health of his beautiful wife Lena, successful entrepreneur and neglectful husband Dimitris Sotos consults a psychiatrist. Determined to get to the root of the problem, the expert physician attempts to shed light on Lena's troubled childhood and her turbulent, secret love life. As a result, a vivid kaleidoscope unfolds as the social prejudices, emotional trauma, broken dreams, and unspoken passions that shaped Lena's character come to light. But the question remains. Can the unconventional psychotherapist help Lena rid herself of the ungovernable urge to seek pleasure in all the wrong places?
The 1974 release, Sexomania, is something of a mystery production. The credits list two directors
imitri Papakonstantis and Mario Retsilas; three screenwriters: Vassilis Manoussakis, Giannis Tziotis and Giorgos Siotis; and two directors of photography: Dimitri Papakonstantis and Syrakos Danalis. The films rather schizophrenic storyline - with two parallel narratives linked by Lena’s memories of her childhood - suggest that here we have two films that were edited together, presumably after production issues of some sort. Whatever its problems were, the film is wildly entertaining and contains more than its fair share of psychotronic episodes and “what the heck??” moments. Famous Greek actress and dancer Maria Ioannidou gives a great, uninhibited performance that led to her later becoming a Playboy centerfold.

Famous Greek actress and dancer Maria Ioannidou gives a great, uninhibited performance that led to her later becoming a Playboy centerfold.DISC FEATURES

The wide release of

From the latest newsletter:
WAIT! BEFORE YOU GO! WE HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO REMIND YOU ABOUT!
We can't let you go without reminding you that we are not that far from having our annual Halloween Sale in just a few months!
Expect it sometime near the end of October. Big sale, as usual. The entire back catalog will be discounted to some extent. AND we'll have some great NEW releases up for pre-order!
And OK, we know what you are thinking - how late will those be?? And you know what - fair enough. Our Halloween Sale limited editions are usually late. But we are trying our damnedest not to let that happen again! To the point if we have to, we will delay the pre-orders going live until they are ready. So there is a chance, a small chance, that our Halloween Sale will ONLY be a sale, and those pre-orders will come closer to the end of the year.
But we don't think that's going to happen. Everything is being worked on now and should be ready to go. We've even made some changes to the line up to facilitate this schedule. Here's what we've announced so far as well as some teases about what we haven't announced -
*DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE UHD upgrade
*MYSTICS IN BALI/QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC Blu-ray upgrades
*Eurohorror upgrade from Blu to UHD
*Horror upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray
*Legal disc debut (Blu-ray) of 60s Eurohorror/drive-in fave
We hope that whets your appetite! And of course we are already hard at work on stuff for 2026! Hopefully this will be the year that Mondo Macabro finally goes to Hong Kong! Expect some horror craziness as well as some truly unexpected things from the former colony.
But that's all for now! See you on August 7!
