It is.

Quote:
Note: the Silent Space version of the film featured on the Diamond Luxe Edition release is presented with lossy 448kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 surround (in multiple languages). No Silent Space lossless track is available. Further details can be found in the "Supplements" section below.

Gravity: Silent Space (Disc 1, HD): An experience that allows fans to watch Gravity without any music, for what Warner calls "a surprising cinematic experience." It isn't exactly surprising, but it is a fascinating way to view the film. And regardless of which version you ultimately prefer, it's well worth your time. As noted above, though, the Silent Space version of the film is presented with lossy 448kbps Dolby Digital 5.1 surround... a disappointment that could have easily been averted.
There's so little music in the movie and what there is, is actually mostly droning. So I don't consider it much of a loss.

That said, here's were the interactivity of DTS:X would be beneficial. Not so much the promised volume tweaking of dialogue objects but rather the option to strip a movie of its score. That would be a rather interesting feature if they were to implement it.

Quote: I wonder if the reason this is 2D is because they haven't figured out how to send Atmos and 3D at the same time. Then again, doesn't Atmos just bitstream to the receiver?
Quote: I believe Transformers: Age of Extinction does 3D and Atmos at the same time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also has both 3D and Atmos. Both TMNT and Transformers are also longer movies than Gravity (Transformers almost an hour and a quarter longer). There's absolutely no technical reason why Warner couldn't have included 3D in the new Diamond Luxe Edition, except that they didn't want to.

Yeah, I forgot about TF:AoE. So basically WB were either being incompetent or dicks. Or both.

Don't give a flying f*** about Dolby Atmos. Just wanted the Silent Space Edition in lossless. Big fumble.

Actually, I just had a thought about that. I doubt the interactivity that DTS has achieved with dialogue volume with DTS:X is something Dolby couldn't easily replicate with Dolby Atmos. But why limit the use to just dialogue? One Atmos encode could potentially have the Silent Space version in lossless if a flag were encoded into the Atmos track to not output the music audio when Silent Space is selected. Likewise, audio commentaries could all have their own objects and remain silent unless prompted by the disc. Basically a whole boatload of "alternate" tracks that are really all encoded on one Atmos track.

It would be cool if they figured out how to do something like that.

Resurrecting this one. Turns out the digital of Gravity now has Dolby Atmos on iTunes. This makes the OOP Luxe Edition version pretty much less valuable now. All extras are on it and it’s on sale for $4.99 for anyone interested.

Funny this should get bumped, I just had my
mom and dad over on Saturday to watch this in 3D. The audio was still very good and my dad remarked how much better my sound system was set up than his. I had DTS Neural X enabled and it had a few height speaker effects, almost could have passed for the real thing.

I did check iTunes later since I had redeemed the digital code when I got the disc, rewatched the opening and the sound was pretty cool but of course less impressive with a 2D picture.

this is so great in 3D. One of the best of the format. I don’t think I could see it any other way. Truly spectacular. The depth, the color, the popout. just breathtaking. And does sound incredible. This is like my go to. With small runtime, it’s an easy watch and has not gotten old.

3D is very good on this, but the Atmos is absolutely reference. Ultimate would be to watch this in 3D with Atmos, but as that’s not available, Atmos then 3D.

Some people can make new discs adding the Atmos soundtrack, but best I can try for is running the player straight to the TV for the picture then syncing the sound from the Apple TV.

I'm guessing this was finished in 2K so waiting for a 4K release wouldn't be worth it?
I only have the DVD but would grab the Blu that's out there if it's a pretty good version.

Well if you buy it from iTunes, when/if the 4K becomes available, it will automatically upgrade. I think there were rumors last year this movie would be released in 4K for sometime this year.
