Sub $15 pricepoint for me since I'm still a Wages of Fear type of guy.

I'm just curious why they bothered releasing it on DVD at all, especially since the audience for this is more or less people like us who're keeping up with what it is anyway. It's not a movie with a lot of mainstream cache. Maybe they had some leftover stock of the old discs and are trying to get rid of them?

So this was wow. Colors popped and the widescreen really brought this home. Highly recommended and this is coming from someone who saw it multiple times during it"s original release and several times on home video and the dreaded pan and scan dvd.
It's not perfect, but it's damn close .The film looks fabulous and sounds perfect. The wait was indeed worth it.

Just wrapped it up this morning and this Blu-ray is going on my Top-10 list of the year in terms of quality. All things considered - it's a reference disc due to the video/audio quality. Honestly, I don't think I had ever seen the film before but it's definitely one of Friedkin's BEST flicks.

Those final shots, the TD music swelling and the cut to the titlle card... gets me every time. Great stuff.
Movies don't get much better than this.

I never saw Sorcerer till Wages of Fear finally came up to check off on that long ass list of films I'll see one day. I made grand mention of this on here too. I loved WoF, except for the ending. It doesn't kill the movie for me but I don't jive with it. THEN I saw Sorcerer. In its shit DVD form... Movie was still badass.
This BD is one of the best so far, with its audio/visual. Color boost aside... It's very impressive. Some shots look like they were just filmed. It's amazing to see this film after only seeing the shit DVD. It's a whole new world with the BD.

Regarding the frame - although it may have served the film well, I doubt it was a conscious choice by Friedkin or anyone specifically for this title. Warner's policy has always been to open up 1.85:1 films to 1.78:1.

It's not a big deal. Actually, 1.78:1 seems to be the norm with regards to films originally framed in 1.85:1 but Josh would know more about that.

how the hell this got a PG rating is beyond me - blood, gun violence, an F bomb - maybe the MPAA fell asleep during the screening

Star Wars came out that year, they probably figured since no one would see the movie, it didn't matter
. As far as the new sound mix, I'm assuming this was originally six-track stereo remixed into 5.1?
Josh explained it to my dumb ass, with some excellent screencaps, and basically the difference is so negligible than no director has ever found it a battle worth fighting, it's a minuscule sliver of information that has no visible effect on compositional intent. I still wish they wouldn't do it, but it's nothing worth getting upset about. Wonder if any old 35mm prints of this are even still around? Bet one in good condition would be a thing of beauty. Anyway, apparently Warner lifts the mattes on 1.85 to 1.78 on all of their Blu releases from what I understand. Like I said, it's not something that I'd endorse and I'd prefer they didn't, but the difference is so minuscule that's pointless to be concerned with it.

Heh. I wasn't even talking about the vertical height going up a sliver from 1.85 to 1.78. That's totally negligible in my book.
No, I was talking about seeing the full width of the frame after being subjected to 4:3 all these years.

1977 saw the release of 'Night and Day', 'Star Wars', 'Metamorphoses', 'Tommy' (reissue), '2001' (reissue) and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' in 6-track (70mm) sound. 'Sorcerer' is denoted as a stereo mixed film (whether that means 2-channel or 4-channel - I'm not sure) during it's initial theatrical run.

Picked this up at second spin for $10.20 (w/40% off coupon) watching it tonight. Wonder if Dark Delicacies will let me have him sign it, or if I have to buy from them. I guess I'll call to find out.

I did a double feature with The Wages of Fear last night. The blu-ray helped me appreciate the film more than I have in the past. I still like The Wages of Fear more but Sorcerer is a good remake.

My copy of Sorcerer arrives tonight.
I own Wages of Fear, but haven't watched it yet.
I'm not sure I can handle a double-feature tonight. What should I watch first?
