I would assume that there will be a US release at some point in the not too distant future.

What is Criterion's relationship with studio canal lately? I know a bunch of their titles went OOP a few years ago, are there currently no titles in the collection from Studio Canal? Because I could see them releasing it.

Since Lionsgate now has the US rights to The Wicker Man, and they have a US distribution deal with Studio Canal, it will most likely come from them, not Criterion.

A thought that gives me nightmares
. In all seriousness, I wasn't aware there was any cut footage, I only knew about the so-called "director's cut" version and the edited, less complete version, I didn't even know it'd been edited down any further than that at some point.

So, we'll get a "Final cut" with less footage than we've seen in previous versions? The precredit sequence cut? Now, I guess I'm glad three cuts will be included, if one of those includes all extant footage which is existing, and in a better quality than we've seen before on previous DVD releases.

Looks like Rialto will be distributing "The Wicker Man" in US theaters. Presumably a blu-ray will follow.
There's an article here:

(I can't read the article, though, as bloody-disgusting is giving 503 errors when I try to go there.)

Here you go:
Rialto Pictures Will Release the FInal Cut of 'The Wicker Man' In the States!
New York-based distributor Rialto Pictures has announced the U.S. release of The Wicker Man – Final Cut, the definitive version of Robin Hardy’s thriller of pagan worshippers on a remote Scottish island. Seen for decades only in mutilated copies, the new Studiocanal restoration is the culmination of a long search (conducted via Facebook) for the complete director’s cut. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the cult classic.
Rialto will roll out the restored version beginning September 27 at IFC Center, New York City, with runs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington and other cities throughout the fall!
“After receiving an anonymous letter about a missing 12-year-old girl, devoutly Christian cop Edward Woodward travels by seaplane to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But the islanders welcome neither his badge nor religious devotion, for laird of the isle Christopher Lee and his devoted followers worship only the pagan gods of old – and those gods demand a sacrifice. Woodward fears for the missing girl’s life and follows every possible lead to find her – despite the islanders’ interference – before she becomes a human sacrificial lamb.“
Starring Edward Woodward (Breaker Morant, TV’s “The Equalizer”), horror film legend Christopher Lee, stalwart Hammer vampiress Ingrid Pitt, and Swedish blonde bombshell/Bond Girl Britt Ekland (Man With The Golden Gun, After The Fox, Get Carter), Wicker Man is a quintessential 70s thriller, with the search for its integral version one of cinema history’s great detective hunts.
Butchered by its doomed UK distributor to fit on double bills, with its original camera negative apparently lost, The Wicker Man has gathered a devoted fan base over the past four decades, with the complete version their Holy Grail. Some missing scenes were recovered from an obsolete one-inch broadcast tape, but over the years there were rumors of complete 35mm prints floating around.
Earlier this year, the search intensified when worldwide rights holder Studiocanal initiated a Facebook campaign to recover the missing 35mm material, resulting in the discovery of a 92-minute 35mm release print at the Harvard Film Archive. This print was scanned and sent to London, where it was recently inspected by director Robin Hardy, who confirmed that it was the same cut he had put together for its American distributor in 1979. This culminated in a digital restoration of the complete U.S. theatrical version, which director Hardy recently anointed as “the final cut.”
Hardy, now 83, has said of this restored version, “It fulfills my vision.”

I've known of the film but have never seen it. It was Edgar Wright mentioning it in a Hot Fuzz commentary that made me want to see it. I'm sure I'd like it. I await to see wtf this BD will have.

No problem. Just be aware, although subject to change, the way it looks now, the SteelBook release will be 1 Blu-ray + 1 DVD, whereas the standard release will be 2 Blu-rays + 1 CD (soundtrack). I don't mind them leaving out the soundtrack, but replacing the second disc of extras in favor of an unnecessary copy of the film on DVD is kind of pissing me off.

Alright, this shit is fucking obnoxious. I don't need a steelbook that bad. Canceling.
Wait, are those special features ported over from the Anchor Bay DC DVD? Because I think I still have that.

I'm not sure, I sold my wooden box a few years ago. Apparently, most of the features on the Second Blu-ray will be on the DVD in the Steelie. The only omissions seem to be "Burnt Offering: The Cult of The Wicker Man documentary written by Mark Kermod; Interview with Christopher Lee & Robin Hardy (1979), and "Ex-S: The Wicker Man", both of which can be found on YouTube.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Zavvi lists it as "B", but that is a common practice on their pre-releases. Oftentimes, it's not known until just before release if it's region-free. In one recent Zavvi SteelBook release, First Blood, even the discs were stamped "B", but upon receipt, it was discovered that they play quite nicely in Region A players.
Act in haste, repent at leisure. Since this edition is limited to 4,000 copies, I would get my order in now, and make your final decision once more details become known.

Given that we don't know even if it's region free, I think I'll just leave it canceled. It was a cool package but not something I have to own.
