Bruce Lee: The Legacy Collection from Shout! Factory

Re: Bruce Lee: The Legacy Collection from Shout! Factory
There were no Cantonese tracks when he was alive. They were made in the late 70's. The english dubs he did where lifted from the Mandarin tracks and his yells where taken from ETD. I've been trying to find out for years why he didn't dub the Mandarin tracks and the only explanation I found was that since he didn't speak Mandarin they just got someone else. Besides, he would have had to convey feeling along with reciting the lines which I think would have taken more time and they wanted to release sooner than later. The HK movie production times are really short and it shows in the final production. They cranked out movies really, really fast back then and most of them were shit.
He did know the guy who voiced the English dub but can't find a reason why he didn't do those himself.

And it does continue to pain my heart to hear that Bruce never did any of those famous ETD yells that got carried into the other films. The only time we hear yells/roars from his real voice is in his famous scene in Marlowe, correct?

Damn. Bey Logan said it was Bruce's voice on those tracks. And it does sound just like him. But I had forgot all about the mandarin tracks being in existence long before the cantonese tracks were made.

He also worked on the "Wrecking Crew" with Dean Martin but only as a fight choreographer. He's listed on the credits in the beginning of the movie.

I think you misread what I wrote. That is Bruce's voice on those Cantonese tracks. They were lifted off the original Mandarin tracks and Enter the Dragon to assemble a Cantonese track in the late 70's. The only other film you can hear his real voice is in Marlowe and the TV series he was in: Green Hornet, Ironside, Longstreet, Blondie and Here Comes the Brides and the Lost Interview he did for a Canadian talk show. You can also hear him on the Green Hornet commercial for ABC; which I believe someone uploaded to Youtube a few years back. It might still be there.

God, I miss the Asian DVD guide. They had a huge thread devoted to this. These films have been released so many times, and never properly. There was a whole bunch of info about Bruce's voice in Mandarin and Cantonese too, but I don't remember any of the details.

In one of extra's in this set, you do actually hear Bruce speak Cantonese. It doesn't sound like that at all in the actual movies. I thought they just dubb his voice for all his movies (in this set)?
Also I don't know if this is because some folks spoke Mandarin and Cantonese in the films, but peoples lips don't always match the sound.

Much like the European film industry, it was common practice for movies like this to be shot without sound, and have all dialogue recorded in post-production. Accurate lip sync is a very American fixation, but has been less of a concern for European or Asian audiences, who are used to dubbing.

Quite true, if you watch many spaghetti Westerns and gialli, you see that people were literally speaking various languages on the set, and then dubbed later. Same thing with Hong Kong action cinema. Jet Li Lian-Jie is actually from mainland China, until Hero, he was never heard speaking his native Mandarin, he was always dubbed in Cantonese. Like Josh says, it's pretty commonplace in European and Asian cinema, just like subtitles, we just have a massive phobia of it over here.

Groupon credited my credit card the day after thanksgiving, and the set just showed up at my doorstep a few minutes ago.
Weird.

Sorry to drudge up an old thread, but I finally got around to making some simple custom covers for the BDs in this set, since the cardboard "sleeves" in the book are awful. Here are some images (spoilered for size...click the links if the images don't show up in the post)...
Front Covers:
Back Covers:
Spines:
If you'd like to use them yourself, you can grab a .zip file with the four covers in .png format here. Warning: they'll use a lot of your ink cartridge's yellow.

Those look great, I imagine they'll look good on a shelf next to Kill Bill.

no prob. I got that one too.
I'll never watch Game of Death. So that one won't get any loving. The only thing I'll watch on that one is on the old Enter the Dragon BD.

Anyone know if the Premiere Collection includes Bruce Lee: The Legend that was on the DVD box set?

Apparently they finally decided to match Best Buy's Black Friday price? Better late than never!
It's worth noting that this Premiere Collection does include an abundance of supplements in spite of losing the docs (and possibly a few other things) from the Legacy set.

Bestbuy.com has had this price on the set ever since it was released. I've come close to ordering it many times, but could never find something to pair with it for free shipping. So thanks to Snake for giving the heads up.

They're dirt cheap now; relatively speaking but if you haven't heard the commentaries your missing out. They are just as entertaining as the movies and have tons of info. on Bruce. Also, there's a lot of info. here on DVDtalk on which players can be purchased or made region free and they're cheap, also.
