Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?

On June 11, Oz will kick off Disney's new Digital Copy Plus website to redeem digital copies. No more discs. You'll be able to pick between iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and Vudu.

There's also an unboxing video of the Oz 2D combo pack. It comes with movie cash to The Lone Ranger.

I like the idea of Amazon Instant Video redemption.

I couldn't find that video on my phone's browser. Does the 2D version come with a coupon to get the 3D version by mail?

I think it's the other way around, if you buy the US 3D version, there will be a coupon for the 2D disc.
If you want to just get around the hassle, get an import version like the upcoming UK one, with both 3D and 2D in the same package.

Are the Disney UK releases region free? And considering how much the US releases are, I'm guessing the UK combos are even more.

Yes, it's showing as region free! It's crazy that it's a combo there and not here. I'll wait a while and then buy the UK version. What a stupid move on Disney's part.

It supposedly works both ways but the only way that's been confirmed via an unboxing is 2D combo w/ 3D form. Between that $7 coupon and Wal-Mart's $19.96 price you're better off getting the BD/DVD/DC combo and ordering the 3D disc. The alternative is paying more for a 3D copy that doesn't come with a DVD and paying same $5.99 for your 2D disc.

This is obviously something of a debacle for Disney but the pricing is making the whole thing a lot easier to accept, and the people importing from the UK are still gonna be waiting longer and paying more in the end.

^ Why do you think those importing will end up paying more?

At the pre-order price, it'll come to just under £19 for 3D BR / BR combo. That's around $30 shipped.

Walmart, you're going to pay $20 + tax and then another $10 for the BR disc.

Is there another deal I missed?

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?

No, BD/DVD/DC is $19.96 per a leaked Wal-Mart ad. Where I live that would be $21.16 out the door but thanks to that $7 coupon from Scott's and Disney Movie Rewards it'll be $14.16 (I think it's subtracted after the tax) so even with the $5.99 extra for the 3D disc I'm looking at $20.15.

I'm pretty sure I'll have my 3D disc in-hand before the importers and I'll have the 2D one to watch on day 1.

Ah, okay. It's the $7 coupon that makes the difference.

Even without the coupon you're still coming in a couple bucks short of $30 based on Wal-Mart's pricing, plus you're getting the full 3D/BD/DVD/DC shebang.

So the unboxing confirms a 3D coupon in the 2D combo box? That's good to hear. I wouldn't want to import the UK version; I'm not sure the digital copy would work in the states.

Love how "Disney", not the movie, has a ton of "1 Star" reviews because of the stunt they are pulling.

1 Star = 93
2-5 Star Total = 100

Remember, the only vote Disney counts is the one from our wallets.

I find it really really odd that neither of this week's Target and Best Buy's newspaper inserts make no mention that a 3D bluray version of Oz is available to purchase - what's up with that??

Which is why I'm not buying Oz.
I'm certainly not going to jump through a bunch of hoops to get what I used to receive in one purchase in the good old ultimate sets. What a pain in the butt. Disney made a major misstep here.

No Combo = Harder to sell.

I really can't blame them. It's a crappy value.

It doesn't look like they are continuing the strategy with Iron Man 3 if the pic on Amazon is correct.

Got my Wal-Mart ad clearly showing the Oz BD/DVD/DC with a $19.96 price. I'll use this at Target with a price match plus my $7 coupon. I'll also earn a $2 Target gift card via the Shopkick app. That'll bring me down to $10.96. Add the $5.99 3D disc and I'm at $16.95 for the combo Disney should have released and I can live with that.

I wonder if they're going to quietly release a full Oz 3D combo at some point now.

Spoiler:
Honestly, it's too soon to say that, releasing uber-combo packs for Marvel and animated titles is a no brainer... Disney does not have that many 3D titles in the pipeline that I can see, that aren't animated or Marvel.

Although Planes is 3D, I would think that could be the same strategy as Oz. (Same thing with Maleficent next year.)

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?

Going back to a post I made during this thread's conception, Disney will have at least four individual SKUs for Iron Man 3 just like The Little Mermaid.
  1. Blu-ray + DVD (Blu-ray packaging)
  2. Blu-ray + DVD (DVD packaging)
  3. Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy
  4. Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + Digital Soundtrack
I think the Oz release was an experiment that bit them on the ass. I don't think we'll see another release like it anytime soon from the Mouse House.

Oz hasn't came out yet. How did it bite them in the ass? They still need to see how many people are willing to pay the $5.99 mail in offer for the 3D upgrade.

How could something bite them in the ass when it hasn't come out yet?

Because of internet backlash? Studios don't always listen to our opinions. Bottom line is whatever they make money on. I don't see this as the end of anything. Who knows how this will do.
