Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?
Disney pushes 3D more than any other studio so it's hilarious to suggest that this is their way of testing the waters for some kind of 3D phase-out.
We're dealing with Disney. If anything they want to save money by including both versions on a single disc or to make more money by getting people to buy both editions.
For what it's worth, Wal-Mart has a listing that suggests that they may have a 3D/2D/DVD/Digital combo. Maybe it's an inaccurate listing, maybe it's an exclusive.

Guru Askew is correct, Walmart is listing the 3D Combo pack with 3D/BR/Dig Copy (and widescreen, thought that was funny that they advertise that now a days).

I would buy this if it came in a 3D Combo pack with BR also.

Disney's corporate executives have let it be known in their conference calls with investors they consider 3-D a theatrical disappointment in terms of revenue. Just because they release a few animated titles on home video, mostly because CGI lends itself so well to the process, does not mean Disney is gung-ho about the format's potential.

The fact that Wal-Mart is showing the same artwork makes me skeptical, but I definitely hope that it turns out to be an exclusive. I would get that one for sure.

I'm surprised 3D is doing as well as it has been in theaters considering the extra charge for it. Although I love 3D, I've seen very few 3D movies in theaters since I feel that just smacks of greed.

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?
So, the next I wanted to see the movie with my wife, we wanted to watch it in 2D. We looked up the times with the 2D showing, all of them were before 4pm, everything after that was 3D.
The exact same thing happened with John Carter (which I liked very much) in the theater. My wife and I wanted to watch it in 2D, but it was only avaiable in 3D. We ended up paying the extra $$$ to watch it in 3D, it was fun in 3D a few times in the movie, but 2D would have been just fine.
-They used 3D to squeeze as much $$$ out us as possible.
So, for him (the Disney Exec) to say 3D is a dissapointment is a bunch of bull. Look how much $$$ they made on Lion King 3D.
Just because it is 3D does not make the public go out and watch it, it has to be a good story also - one the public wants to see. J.C. of Mars was not a movie the public wanted to spend their $$$ 2D or 3D.
Avatar is still the best 3D experience I have ever watched on the big screen.

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?
I'm not sure what Disney will take away from this release. I love 3D blurays but they're overpriced. I usually wait for sales but I will often buy the Disney 4/5 disc packages because I see them as a good deal depending on the title. I'm not buying Oz because of their change in marketing and the final price for the 3D version is pretty much the same as the previous ultimate packages. (I'm not a fan of digital copies so that brings nothing more to the deal in my book.) So, will they think that people don't like or want 3D if a lot of folks don't buy this release or will they be smart of enough to consider that maybe they pushed the price too high for a 3D disc?

Avatar and Hugo are the best 3-D flicks I've ever seen.

Then you obviously haven't seen "The Stewardesses"
(I KID!)
Back on topic, I don't like paying more for multiple copies of the same movie. If I buy a 3D movie, I really only care about the 3D copy- I sure as hell don't care about a 2D standard DVD, but with many of them I get that anyway, and that's fine if they don't charge me extra for it. It's harder to find good prices on Disney titles though- I ended up getting single-disc promos of Pirates, Tangled, Bolt and Alice in Wonderland from an Ebay seller in China, for about $10 each including shipping, far less than I would've paid for the US combo packs (and yes, these are legit, not bootlegs.) Don't miss having the 2D versions of these one bit! (And has ANYBODY bought "Mars Needs Moms" at its $30+ price point? I can't judge that movie as I've never seen it, I'd actually like to buy it but not at that price!)

Thus far I feel the best looking 3D BD I own is The Three Musketeers. Now if only I could find Step Up 3D on sale.
Since I assume that's a reference to porn, it's a shame Cytheria doesn't squirt anymore. That's a 3D release that'd make you reflexively reach for an umbrella.

Hey, at least for the recently announced The Little Mermaid release, they'll be four individual SKUs!

Why create a release with the BD+DVD+DC when most who would opt for that version are going to spend the extra and get the Blu-ray 3D too? Right now with the Amazon $5 off coupon, the difference is $3.
- Blu-ray + DVD (Blu-ray packaging)
- Blu-ray + DVD (DVD packaging)
- Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy
- Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + Digital Soundtrack

What is with them still doing the separate DVD and BD packaging? Are there really people who won't realize what it is if it's not in the familiar case?

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?
Amazon UK lists the 3D version of OTGAP 2 discs with Blu ray 3D + Blu Ray and region free (technically it would be all region). I don't know how final those specs are and you may not be able to count on both discs being region unlocked. It may be an option if the US release does not include the 2D version and if you can live without a DVD version. I may hold out for this version once it is released if I can get confirmation that neither disc is region locked. I can play region locked BD but not region locked 3D BD. I'll by the US release if the 3D version has a 2D BD included.

I couldn't find those - maybe the Evil Mouse ordered Facebook to remove the evidence.

Walt Disney Studios, creator of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack, has come up with a new configuration designed to simplify matters for the consumer — and at the same time recognize that 3D for the home, at least for now, is still a small but growing business.
Instead of making Oz the Great and Powerful available in an everything-goes combo pack, the studio is releasing the film in a Blu-ray Disc-DVD combo pack and individual Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Blu-ray 3D configurations, each with a digital copy.
Previously, the studio packaged Blu-ray 3D in with the regular Blu-ray-DVD combo pack. With Oz, buyers of the Blu-ray 3D can still get the 2D version for an additional $5.99, plus shipping and handling. And buyers of the regular Blu-ray Disc can get the 3D version for the same amount.
"We strive to give our consumers the best in-home experience and consistently evolve our mix of product offerings,” said a spokesperson for Disney. “We know that our 3D consumers enjoy that experience as well as the ease of use and functionality of digital copy. With Oz the Great and Powerful we're offering a single, simplified version for their in-home and on-the-go viewing needs. And, for those desiring a 2D Blu-ray version of the film, there's an offer included in the package.”
-NO Sale for me, now they are trying sell the BR/3D with a DVD. Like those with a 3D HDTV are every going to watch the movie on DVD, I would not.

My bad, I read "DVD and Blu-ray 3D configurations" as one Pack.
Still, Disney is try to charge us more for less now, I vote no buy on this title or they will do this on every movie coming out.
They are trying "Show" that they are tying to help us in our selection, but ALL they want to do is charge us more $$$.
VOTE NO with your wallet.

Re: Disney splitting up Blu Ray & Blu Ray 3D releases?
Let me see if I understand this math...
BD3D+Digital Copy and I can get the BD2D for $5.99 plus S&H.
or
BD2D+Digital Copy and I can get the BD3D for $5.99 plus S&H.
Unless the BD3D has the exact same extras as the BD2D, I see no reason to get the 3D release and I'm not paying Disney any money to get a BD2D with my 3D purchase. Especially if I have to pay for S&H which Disney has always charged $4 for. That's a ten dollar add-on compared to past Disney BD3D releases that had at most a $5 price difference at retail stores.
