Given this is a Paramount release, I'm surprised they didn't do the same thing as with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters: theatrical cut on the 3D disc and the extended cut on the 2D disc.
Of course, if this is anything like that movie, the extended cut will be a 50/50 split of better and worse than the theatrical cut.

Re: G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Jul 30, 2013)
I'm trying to decide whether or not to get the edition that has the 3D blu-ray. I don't own a 3D tv and don't know if my PS3 can play 3D movies. Also not sure when we'll get a 3D tv as we got this tv in 2008 and it's still working really well. And yet, I was very impressed with the 3D in this movie, especially the cliff battle scene, so I'm not sure what to do.
Thoughts on the future (and affordability) of 3D tvs and blu-ray players?

However, no PS3 can play Dolby True HD while playing a movie in 3D. Not even if you try to decode it and pass it as LPCM. Whether you bitstream or decode and pass as LPCM, you only get the lossy Dolby core. Thanks to another update, 3D discs encoded in DTS-HD MA don't share this problem.
From what I've read, Dolby claims all the PS3 needs is another firmware update to address the issue but Sony hasn't seen fit to bother.

Correct. To be fair, a majority of the Blu-ray 3D discs out there utilize DTS-HD MA tracks which the PS3 can process.
Brave, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., and Transformers: Dark of the Moon are the only four Blu-ray 3D discs I own that use Dolby TrueHD.

Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and G.I. Joe: Retaliation are also Dolby TrueHD since Paramount seems to have switched back to Dolby.

So wait, I don't need a 3D HDTV to watch a 3D blu-ray with my PS3? What sort of glasses do I need to get?

No, you still need a 3D TV. But if you got one, you wouldn't need a new blu-ray player (which you might, if you had owned another blu-ray player that was not upgradable like PS3).

UPS just delivered my copy and I went to order the free dog tags. It needs your blood type and I don't know mine. Gonna have to call the Red Cross.

Decided to get both the Best Buy and Target versions (will give the latter, sans bonus disc and slip cover, to my brother-in-law). The bonus disc for Target is a Blu-ray and is tucked in the fold out on the front of the slip cover. Will check later if the Best Buy one also has the theatrical version on the Blu-ray disc (I'm thinking it doesn't) but it is on the DVD copy.

Okay, so I decided to pick up the Target Exclusive with bonus disc and the Best Buy Extended version.
Here's the lowdown on what you're getting:
Target version:
Disc 1: Feature Film (110 minutes)
Extras: Commentary Track, GI Joe Declassified featurettes and deleted scenes
Disc 2 (DVD):
Barebones Theatrical version of movie.
Disc 3:
Exclusive BD bonus disc with featurettes.
Best Buy (Extended Action Cut):
Disc 1: Extended Version (123 minutes)
Extras: No commentary track. GI Joe Declassified featurettes and deleted scenes
Disc 2 (DVD):
Barebones Theatrical version of movie.
There you have it. So if you want everything from this movie, you need to buy 2 copies. If you don't need 2 versions, then great, pick the one that most interests. Only drawback for the extended version is no commentary. Not that anyone here listens to them.

and also.. some folks may want 3D... and it looks like the BBY exclusive is not in the 3D package.. so maybe it is Target for the 3D with bonus disc and Best Buy for the extended action cut.. btw.. is there a summary yet on the differences in the BBY version.. is it added footage or different footage or both..
Never Mind... I saw post 44
