Re: Mad Max trilogy - 6/4/13

Road Warrior is, hands down, the best of the three.

Mad Max is good, but it's very different from either Road Warrior or Beyond Thunderdome. It doesn't have the same post-apocalyptic, sci-fi feel that the two sequels did. I suppose it sort of makes sense in that regard, in that the world is progressively going to hell with each installment.

Beyond Thunderdome is easily the least of the three, but it's not exactly terrible... we're not in Jaws 3 or Jaws: The Revenge territory here. If you can get past the stunt-casting of Tina Turner and the lighter tone, it's not a bad entry in the franchise.

Yeah, I would love to see this released uncut, too. This movie deserves a full special edition.

But I suspect that we'll just get a reissue of the old blu-ray.

I believe that the Blu-Ray of the second film was the uncut version.

"As a matter of fact it was."

I've only got Road Warrior on HD DVD, the others on DVD, so buying this seems to make sense. I'll wait until it hits $25 or less, though.

Have to say I liked Thunderdome for all the characters. Tina never looked so good. Liked Gibson with the long hair at first. The Master Blaster was great. And the Lost Tribe of Kids made it more than just all about "Max"....

I actually had a "crush" on her....her accent just killed me...

Re: Mad Max trilogy - 6/4/13

Apparently Byron Kennedy, George Miller's longtime producing partner, was killed in a helicopter crash while location scouting and as a result, Miller only wanted to direct the action scenes and Oglive directed the actors. It certainly shows, as the film does tend to lack a cohesive vision. Perhaps his heart wasn't in it, as on review I once read said, plus at that point, the franchise was dumbing itself down to a PG-13 movie. The first 45 minutes or so are pretty strong, I think, then the movie completely shifts gears to Mad Max becoming a babysitter and the movie kind of falls apart. Some of the production design and post-apocalyptic imagery is (Are?) interesting, and some of the action scenes are cool, I know a lot of people who really like the chase sequence.

Re: Mad Max trilogy - 6/4/13

If WB is going to use the existing disc for Mad Max, keep in mind that the blu-ray is missing features from the special edition DVD. This was somewhat remedied by MGM with their combo pack, but if WB doesn't make this a combo pack set people may want to keep this in mind when deciding between buying the individual releases or the box set.

Will definitely get this, and FWIW, I like Thunderdome, in spite of Tina Turner.

Interesting. That looks like a 2-piece tin rather than a SteelBook or MetalPack.

Back in stock at Best Buy for $24.99 for local pickups but no shipping.

Not sure if it is the Tin case.

It is 2 piece tin case, and a pretty ugly one at that.

Nope, same old releases that can be had in their separate 1 disc versions. Some would say for Mad Max, that is good thing (issues with the Shout! remaster)

I think at this point there is only the tin case for the trilogy release. And it's 24.95 at Costco for those that want to pick it up there. They also have the Robocop and Man with No Name trilogies for the same price. Those do have the remasters for the first movies included.

The tin case is kind of cool, actually. Until you try to open it. I doubt that any more remasters are on the way, but 2 looks pretty good.

I didn't catch the extreme time lag in the thread bump.

Got to disagree. The way the back is formed is really weird and makes the whole case far thicker than it needs to be. Should have at least been in the kinds if tins they used for Band of Brothers or the Target exclusives of The Walking Dead.

Wasn't The Road Warrior upgraded to lossless audio?

Yup, new encode and upgrade in audio. Most reviews say the differences are minimal, but they are there and I was wrong to say imply is is the exact same disc as before. Same transfer though which I would say most people are looking for before jumping on an upgrade. But it does seem to be the exact same disc for Thunderdome, and the same first 1 disc Mad Max BD, unless I missed something.

Does it include anything new, or just a repackaging of the old trilogy set with FR stuck in it? UV codes would be nice, but I wouldn't buy a whole new set just for them, and I've heard that MM2 is one Vudu's aspect ratio foul-ups.

Re: Mad Max trilogy - 6/4/13

That's what I'm wondering as well. I would hate to pick up the Best Buy set for $25 only to have the new set include the remastered versions.

Re: Mad Max trilogy - 6/4/13

Get the 3-disc tin. It contains the best versions currently available. Road Warrior is the upgraded version. Mad Max is the older version, but by all accounts, actually has better PQ than the new version released in May, although it's missing a few superfluous new extras.

The amray sits nicely on my shelf, while the crappy tin makes a decent cigar case.
