Terminator is now on Netflix. I don't know if it's the original color timed one or the newer remastered version. I just got the email for it.

Is this a new transfer and corrected/revised sound mix or is it just based on the previous master/remix?

Like all the other recent James Cameron remasters, it will be based on the last existing video master with A.I. processing to remove grain and artificially sharpen details.

Yeah I have no expectation this will be any good especially based on his comments on the complaints with the last round of titles.

Was that proven to be fact? I recall reading the claims, but didn't know they were substantiated.

A Lightstorm Entertainment rep confirmed that Aliens was upconverted from the 2K Blu-ray master. When you screenshot the discs, it's very obvious they're exactly the same except the grain has been wiped out and the details sharpened.

The Abyss and True Lies were supposedly scanned in 4K by Lowry Digital in 2014, but the studio then sat on the masters and did not release them on Blu-ray until Park Road Post dusted them off and ran them through additional A.I. processing.

Personally, I might believe that for The Abyss, but judging by the results, I don't believe True Lies was ever scanned in 4K. That disc looks far worse than the others, and the underlying master looks positively ancient. Even a 2K scan in 2014 ought to look better than what we've gotten. What I believe may have actually happened is that Lowry was probably given the HD master from the 2003 D-VHS release to clean up as best they could in 2014, and Park Road then ran it through another round of processing recently.

In any case, the point is that none of these Cameron films were newly scanned or remastered for this round of reissues. The studio took the best available masters on hand for each and gave them to Park Road Post to sharpen and remove grain. The Terminator will absolutely be based on the 2012 Blu-ay master.

A poster over at Blu-ray.com claims to have watched this new transfer:

I'll preface this by saying it is to my untrained eye. I think grain purists will not be too happy as I think it has been notched down a fair bit. That said, I think this is the most successful in terms of retaining levels of detail. The grain that is there is subtle outside of certain scenes. Linda Hamilton's perfect complexion might initially fool you into thinking it is a waxy mess but faces are detailed without egregious sharpening or worse. Such a contract watching T2 straight after, the greatest movie of all time, reduced to a sad candle.

I think this one will come down to preference for people. It isn't like True Lies, T2 or Aliens where there are fundamental issues beyond stylistic approach to remastering.

Ridiculously minor, but one specific thing I noticed out the corner of my eye was some strange wobbling on the wall as The Terminator approached the house of the first Sarah Connor. Would like to see it again when the 4K comes out to see if it was just my imagination.

Arnie's penis has never been clearer.

Actually just watched the Blu-ray of this last night. It had been a bit since I last watched it. My wife’s first time seeing it. I’d consider a 4K upgrade but not sure if I want to with Cameron’s track record.

My favorite movie podcast just dropped an episode with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd discussing The Terminator for its 40th Anniversary. Will listen later today.
