Gotta spend money to make money. Plus, Skyfall took in a billion dollars at the box office. If ever there was a sure bet on where to "risk" the home video release budget, surely this is it.

Keep in mind that, even with a huge hit like this, MGM is still dead broke and hopelessly in debt. Releasing multiple editions for different retailers is probably seen as extraneous.
With that said, a Steelbook will be available in Europe. However, initial specs on Amazon UK indicate that it's Region B locked.

Just got back from Walmart. They have a pre-order offer: $18.96 for the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack delivered to your home, plus you get to choose either Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace to add to your Vudu library in HD. To guarantee on-time delivery of Skyfall, you have to order by 4 February. It's tempting, but there's enough time left to wait to see what other retailers do.
I've been keeping my eye on the second-run theater to see when Skyfall will play there. It still hasn't hit, believe it or not!

Here's hoping for an Amazon pricematch of the Walmart price.

Glad I went ahead and just did Walmart's preorder. $1.10 less, plus I got to add Quantum of Solace to my Vudu library.

Nabbed it today at Amazon thanks to the current price. Not my favourite Bond film (not even my favourite Craig-Bond film) but it's worth it at that price.

The above is only packaging (looks like a slip cover that fits over the standard case)...the discs themselves are the same...and at $25.99, I think I'd rather get it for $19.99 in the standard case.

Those covers look lazy. Though I do like that they paired
together on one of the covers.

This showed up in my Gold Box this morning at Amazon. Nabbed it for $18.99 + tax... thanks to Prime, it'll be here Tuesday.

I'm waiting on the eventual drop to 10 bucks or less.

My pre-ordered Blu-ray came yesterday! Or maybe it came Saturday and no one bothered to tell me until yesterday. Either way, I'm pretty excited that I already have it and this definitely will encourage me to consider future Walmart/Vudu pre-order offers.
I spent most of the early morning hours watching the bonus content and then the Sam Mendes commentary track. I still have the second commentary track to go, but I feel pretty confident saying that this is the weakest offering we've ever had for a James Bond home video release in the DVD era. There's a making-of doc split into 13 thematic segments that runs just under an hour, a bit of footage from the royal premiere that barely exceeds four minutes in run time, one of the trailers and a promo spot for the soundtrack album. That's it outside of the two commentary tracks and 15 minutes of trailers and ads from Fox, half of which auto-plays when you insert the disc.
I discussed the bonus content more in depth in a Letterboxd diary entry in case anyone really wants to hear what I have to say about it.
One very little thing I forgot to mention in that diary entry: I really like the slipcover. I'm not one of the slipcover fanatics or anything, but this one is kinda nice. The online photos made it look rather generic, I thought, but in person it's actually kind of elegant as these things go. The cardboard stock has a nice texture to it, and the photo of Daniel Craig is glossy, which creates a nice contrast. I also appreciate that the font they used for the formats ("Blu-ray | DVD | Digital Copy") is small enough not to dominate the top of the cover.

I don't care that it doesn't look like the rest of the discs in the Bond 50 set. In fact I don't think I'll even put the disc in the box set, I'll keep the blu ray as is. I still have my copies of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Considering it's one of the most popular Bond movies ever, I'm sure we'll see a special edition of SKYFALL at some point...for now, I'm just happy to have the movie at a reasonable price.

Nice!
I went back last night after Dallas and watched it with the second commentary track. It was one of the dullest commentary tracks I can recall offhand, unfortunately. I updated my aforementioned Letterboxd diary entry, though.
Despite watching it twice yesterday (both commentary tracks) and the bonus content, I'm actually considering re-watching the movie itself already. It's been quite a while since I was this into re-watching a movie, and the weird thing is, Skyfall didn't excite me in the same way that previous movies have that I've re-watched with this kind of frequency. Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves; these I just had to keep re-watching. (I was also an adolescent at the time.)

I still prefer Casino Royale to Skyfall. I really liked it, but I didn't completely love it like most did. It drags just a little during the middle, and then Javier Bardem gives it a much needed boost.

This pretty sums up my feelings on Skyfall. I liked it but Casino Royale was better to me.
