How exactly does this work?
Likely less space for each version or a double-sided disc.

No, it's part of the 3D specification. When the disc is authored, they have the choice of enabling 2D playback by only displaying one of the two frames (i.e. showing only one eye's view). There have been several titles released already that allow 2D and 3D playback.

The only title I can think of is The Darkest Hour. From what I recall the results were hit & miss with some players not playing the disc at all.

A ton of Sony blu-rays have both 3D and 2D on the same disc, not rare at all and has been happening for years.

Kind of weak from Lionsgate. *sigh* How I wish this was a financially successful movie.

The lack of a director's commentary is not surprising considering rumors of the behind-the-scenes drama and Alex Garland taking control in the editing room. Based upon that and Lionsgate's more recent releases, I'm not shocked my the mass piling of bonus material.

I didn't see this at the Theater but I suspect it will rock the house with a decent soundtrack?

Again...not even Prometheus, Avatar, or Hugo could get me to get those in 3D. Dredd though makes it a lot of fun. It's not better 3D than those 3...which I would call superior 3D...but it's fun as hell w/ it.

I'd be willing to import if it's Region free..hell..I'll get it if it has a badass cover even. I don't give a fuck. Dredd was awesome.
How the hell does your poor ass have a 3D HDTV?

New price at Amazon is $21.96. They're matching Walmart.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/22/13

Got a $25 Amazon GC for X-Mas from one of my friends. Used it to pre-order Dredd.

Came out to a little over $23 after tax, but with free shipping.

Hope the price drops a little more before release week.

BTW, it's probably slim, but I hope the sales are great and maybe we'll get a Direct to Video sequel with Urban as Dredd still.

This is the UK disc.

They really couldn't put 2D & 3D on separate discs?

1. Lionsgate didn't release the disc in the UK, so the video and audio quality could possibly be even better than on the Region B disc.
2. WAAAAH, I HATE THEY'RE GIVING ME BOTH VERSIONS OF THE FILM ON THE SAME DISC, WAHHHH! Really?

To be fair, Lionsgate did a fantastic job with Step Up Revolution on Blu-ray in regards to the quality control side of things. While the extras are meh, the disc contains both 2D and 3D presentations that are near flawless alongside a DTS Neo:X 11.1 track. And guess what? It runs the same length as Dredd 3D.

To be fair, I'd be surprised if Dredd 3D lacked a DTS Neo:X track based upon Lionsgate's past few releases.

No need to be a dick.

Not my fault the UK disc's 2D transfer suffers apparently due to some encoding error as a result of it being one disc.

It's also not a fault of the 2D and 3D error being on the same disc. It's the fault of whichever company did the final mastering of the disc. I would be shocked if the Lionsgate disc suffered the same issue, especially since Lionsgate has never put out a 3D release where the 2D and 3D weren't on separate discs. The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Conan the Barbarian, My Bloody Valentine, Saw: The Final Chapter, Spy Kids 3, and Step Up Revolution for example had both editions on a single disc. And guess what? Most of them got stellar remarks in regards to their picture quality.

Sony and Summit also have put out numerous Blu-ray 3D discs where the 2D and 3D edition sit on the same disc and similar thing.

If the disc is authored and mastered correctly, there should be no issues in regards to video quality. Hell, most Blu-ray 3D releases don't require separate discs. It's a gimmick to sell the 3D copy at a premium price point... and probably appease those who own older Blu-ray players or have never decided to upgrade their firmware.

Re: Dredd 3D -- 1/22/13

I'm reviewing the disc now. It does have DTS Neo X, although I have no way of accessing 11.1 channels of sound so I couldn't say what it sounds like. The 7.1 DTS HD MA that I could hear is exceptional.

The 3D image is stunning. Absolutely gorgeous. The 2D playback is noisier than the 3D in certain shots, and appears slightly softer. It's not so bad, but the 3D image is among the best 3D presentations I've seen on disc, whereas the 2D is good but not great.

To argue, when I saw the 3D, I thought there were quite a few shots that were noisy/softer than the rest of the film. The slow-motion sequences in particular come to mind.
