I believe the Kickstarter copies ship out a bit earlier than the retail ones do, and as you note at least for this Kickstarter you can pay more to get an exclusive lenticular cover. But yes, if the Kickstarter is already funded, and you can be patient, you could wait for a sale and save money.
However, I think contributing to the Kickstarter can have an impact above "does this movie get released or not." I think the Kickstarter pledge totals and first week sales of a title likely influence future titles, which ones and how often they're released. Seeing a very successful Kickstarter that went way above its goal could influence more studios to license out 3D movies for release, and it encourages distributors like Kino Lorber to keep distributing them. What's more, I'm just guessing but I figure 3D Film Archive gets a far larger cut of the sale from the Kickstarter than from the retail sales, so I know more of my money is going straight to an entity dedicated to licensing and releasing more 3D content.
But it's all a subjective determination of value and affordability. I can afford to pay a bit more upfront to support these releases, so I do. I'm not going to begrudge someone willing to wait a few months to get them on sale though.

I ask because I was reading a thread on the other board about some 3D Kickstarter film and the makers had said they were going to do it BD-R... and as I typed that out I remembered, it's: Enhanced Dimensions Collect3D.
Also finally got around to watching Tomb Raider 3D and it struck be as a below average 3D experience.

I got my name in the special thanks credits also. I was surprised Robot Monster’s fundraiser took in so much, but they barely break even on some other titles.

Probably a smart thing. Because why pay $40 on the Kickstart when you can buy it for $15 shipped from Kino a few months later during one of their sales and get the exact same item. I kinda felt ripped off after buying Dynasty so I didn't buy the next release thru Kickstarter.
I like to support them and everything but to not get anything exclusive on Kickstarter and pay so much more, it stings a little.
At least Robot Monster, you can add on a special lenticular coverthough it makes no mention of it being a Kickstarter exclusive that I saw.
I take that back: Will there be any differences between the Kickstarter disc and the version released commercially? No, they will be the exact same disc and content.
The advantage to placing a pre-order is that you will be among the first to receive it, well before the commercial release. In addition, the bonus add-ons (lenticular cover, View-Master package) will only be available to backers of this pre-order campaign.

The 3D Archive announced a second commentary for the ROBOT MONSTER disc:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects.../posts/3276462
In the comments below the post, someone mentions a book called 'I Cannot, But I Must' by Anders Runestand that clocks in at nearly 700 pages (!) and would seem to be the definitive – and most exhaustively researched – book on the subject. It even drew a positive Amazon review from Swamp Thing illustrator Stephen Bissette, among others. Might be cool if the 3D Archive could get Runestand to contribute in some way too, perhaps in a third commentary or some kind of video appreciation.

I am very pleased to announce an additional commentary track for this release!
Kevin Scott Collier is the author of Robot Monster Diaries, a fabulous book with many fascinating behind the scenes stories about this iconic motion picture. Mr. Collier will be providing a bonus commentary track for the feature and we are absolutely delighted to have him on board!

The ROBOT MONSTER disc topped 1,000 pledges, so three more bonus features are being added:
Wow, the success of this pre-order campaign is simply amazing. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
As we hit the fantastic milestone of 1,000 pledges, I'm very pleased to announce three additional bonus segments for this release.
1. In association with our good friend Carl Scheckel at Carl's Comix, we are proud to present the newly restored Golden Age 3-D comic book, ADVENTURES IN 3-D! Cover by Howard Nostrand. Stories and art by Bob Powell and Howard Nostrand.
2. Restored Golden Age 3-D short from Broadway Roadshow Productions. The title will be announced very soon but rest assured, "They Pop Right Off the Screen!" The Winona Times - September 4, 1954
3. A Night at the Movies - a specially curated collection from 3DFA producer Jack Theakston with original 2-D trailers and snipes from the summer of 1953, recreating what you would have seen in theatres at the time ROBOT MONSTER was playing first-run in Los Angeles.

Anyone have Colin Farrell Fright Night 3D? Decent 3D? I’ve always liked movie and Anton, of course. Saw once, way back. liked this one and figured why not get the best possible for now. Heard some mixed reviews. Seemed overall decent, but want to verify with someone who saw…

Nice. That’s all I need. Not drab or dismal. But good sounds good. Thanks tres. Amazon marketplace seller had like new for $20 with shipping. I have the 2D and digital, but $35 on Vudu for 3D/2D, figured this was better choice and probably better quality.

Yeah me too, I have only like 2 animated combos. Hotel Transylvania 3 and one other, maybe Abominable? I dunno, but they were sick sales for a bunch. I’ll probably never see, but who knows. It was the sale that got me.

Hotel Transylvania 3 has never been on disc in 3D, so I caved and "bought" that on Vudu when it became available. Heard the 4th one won't be in 3D, and also won't have Adam Sandler- and that was decided before it was announced it would go straight to streaming.

Good to know I'm not alone. Don't mind waiting a little longer, though. Sign of the times.

Dang, I received Jumanji a couple of weeks ago. I can't believe so many of you are still waiting.
I wish they had posted that Jumanji combo earlier. Now I feel like I need the other in 3d, too.

We’ll, I do know as of today, Jumanji: TNL is somewhere in US. No idea where, but at least it’s something.
