Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Watched THE MAZE 3D last night. Always amazed at the work the 3D Archive does with these old gems. The suspense is slow-burn, but the payoff was a fun surprise. Depth effects are phenomenal throughout and at their best (obviously) during the climax set within the maze itself. Pop-outs are rightly kept to a minimum. This show definitely loses a lot in 2D, which is how I re-watched it to listen to the excellent commentary by Tom Weaver and co.

Got my copy from Amazon UK this week. Wasn't impressed with the 3D at all. There are a lot of dark scenes, which as you know doesn't bode well for 3D. Saw some added depth a few times throughout the film, but there was zero pop out (no surprise there).

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
If your TV has 2D-to-3D conversion, put some color bars up using that and set your controls with the glasses on. That should compensate for any differences the glasses create. The theatrical presentation of Last Jedi I saw was ridiculously dark, so much so that I'll probably never go to that theater again, but still can't imagine watching it in 2D.
(Been trying to get the 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision settings right on my TV, but I can't even FIND color bars using those and you can't just 'convert' any test pattern instead!) |

(Been trying to get the 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision settings right on my TV, but I can't even FIND color bars using those and you can't just 'convert' any test pattern instead!) I re-watched The Last Jedi after re-calibration. Sadly, though, I stand by my original opinion. The 3D presentation just isn't impressive. I've now watched it in 3D from the sweet spot position as well as off center to see if that would make a difference, but it didn't. I tried sitting a bit closer to the screen the second time and even changed the eyewear setting from normal to light, but all that did was brighten the picture and reveal some crosstalk. As long as a movie I'm interested in is available in English on BD 3D somewhere in the world, I'll buy that version just because I have the equipment, and I would feel like I'm missing out if I didn't. I'm just that way. But as far as recommending this version of The Last Jedi from Amazon UK, I really can't unless you can buy it for about what you'd pay for the non-imported 2D version. Of course, people's experiences with 3D films vary, but I know I won't be using this one to demo my 3D projector. |

Yep, I’ve seen the Sony test patterns. The BD ones are pretty good but the 4K test patterns are different- they’re not sufficient for setting color the way color bars are. (Sony’s 3D discs only have 2D test patterns, so you still need to turn on the 2D to 3D conversion to use those.)

I'm the guy in the middle. I didn't find the 3D nearly as good as this review would indicate but also not nearly as bad as some in this thread have said. It was decent with a few standout moments but not spectacular.

wha?

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
That's called side-by-side 3D- you have to manually switch your TV to that mode and it will show a 3D picture.
