The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Well I'm about to buy my first 3D set in a couple of weeks. Just ordered the Panasonic 210 BD and have Drive Angry and The Lion King in 3D.
Did some searching and didn't find much in terms of how the 3D population here likes certain discs so how about some of you post your favorite 3D Blu rays as far as 3D pop and implementation. I don't even think the site really includes them in their reviews. So lets have it what do you think are the best discs in terms of 3D? ***UPDATE*** List of movies that are made using 3D and are not post production conversions. If it's not in this list it's fake. List is in order of release date. Spoilerized for size. I will be making updates. Spoiler:

If you want straight reviews, blu-ray.com has a section for those.
I'm building up my library for the media room I'll have built in my new home in a couple of months. So I've been reading up on the technology. Due to how fast paced the technology keeps changing and the types of TV's already out there (passive/active), I would think a lot pf people's opinions are based on what they have in addition to the disc itself. |

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Just ordered Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs and Open Season 3D. I heard the transfers were great and also Meatballs is on sale on Amazon for $19.99 and Open Season was $23.
I guess this thread was wasn't a good idea... |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Not many people have or want 3D. I have it...but only watch a movie every once and a while.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
The ones filmed in 3D are all pretty good with the "pop" you're looking for (Avatar, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Drive Angry, Saw, lots of animation) and the 3D converts vary from passable (Thor) to atrocious (The Last Airbender).
|
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Yea I'm trying to keep to films shot in native 3D. I also ordered Lion King(I heard the 3D was perfect even thou it is a conversion ) with the overstock special. I already got Drive Angry when Amazon had it for $11. I will not be doing any of that 2D to 3D nonsense.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
In case anyone is interested Amazon UK has Despicable Me 3D BD Region Free.
My total came out to $23.11. Not bad considering Amazon US has it for $35 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Despicable-...g=bluraycom-21 |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Thanks for the misleading thread title. I thought Scent of Mystery was on the way. ;)
The only thing I'll add is, before you buy a 3D movie, ask yourself if you would still buy it if it wasn't 3D. If the answer is no, you may regret it when the novelty wears off. |

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I buy just about every 3D title that comes out because I'm a big fan of the technology. (When 3D first came out, I could care less about it, but after seeing a few demos I got suckered in.) I have a 65" Panny plasma with active glasses and the 3D is very good on that set.
Some of my favs so far: Final Destination Captain America Ultimate Wave Tahiti My Bloody Valentine IMAX: Hubble Telescope Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs Despicable Me Avatar Yogi Bear Sanctum Priest (As a movie lover I favor live action over animation even though most of the best 3D movies are animation titles.) |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
From the 2010 & 2011 Spending Tabs:
12/16/10: Despicable Me / $49.99 / $21.99 / NBC Universal Store / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 12/21/10: Step Up 3 / $49.99 / $19.99 / Best Buy / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 01/11/11: Piranha 3D / $39.95 / $20.49 / Borders / Includes Blu-ray 3D 01/25/11: Saw: The Final Chapter / $49.99 / $4.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 03/29/11: Tangled / $49.99 / $16.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 04/05/11: Tron: Legacy / $49.99 / $15.99 / Target / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 10/04/11: Beauty and the Beast / $49.99 / $21.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 10/04/11: The Lion King / $49.99 / $21.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 10/06/11: Thor / $54.99 / $19.99 / Overstock / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy 10/25/11: Captain America: The First Avenger / $54.99 / $19.99 / Overstock / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy As it stands right now, my pre-order for the five-disc (BD 3D+BD+DVD+DC) combo pack of Cars 2 has dropped down to $19.99 based upon Amazon's (brief) $7 off coupon for pre-ordering early. One doesn't need to spend twenty bucks or more on 3D titles. You just need to keep your eye out for good deals or hold out. When Amazon puts Disney combo packs up for pre-order, they'll also attach a limited time coupon that sometimes manages to be far greater than the Disney coupon at release (i.e. Cars 2, Tangled). The only catch is you need to pre-order it before they pull the coupon, which usually happens within a day or two of the pre-orders going live. While I also hold the agreement that I don't want any post-converted 3D films in my collection, in the cases where I do own the films, it came out cheaper to own them in the 3D combo pack. In terms of live action, Step Up 3 has amazing 3D and it's a perfect demo disc as Disney gave it a flawless transfer alongside a 7.1 soundtrack. I've had friends come over to watch it and they're impressed by the 3D. In terms of animation, Despicable Me looks great... but as others have mentioned, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are pretty phenomenal too. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I really liked Megamind in 3D, but my favorite 3D program so far has been a British TV show called Brian May's Brief History of 3D (yes, the Queen guitarist -- he's a big collector). It's very well done and shows just how old the 3D "fad" is.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Computer animated movies have the best 3D pop-out effect IMHO. I own these: Tangled, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, Open Season, Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur, and Shrek Forever After. I have the first 3 Shrek movies in 3D too, but they were conversions and the 3D effects aren't as good as the fourth Shrek. Same with Lion King and Beauty & the Beast 3D. Of course, Avatar looks great in 3D. I wish I could say the 3D effects in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides impress, but there are few pop out moments.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Got my TV on friday Vizio e3d420vx and wow I'm impressed with this TV at the price point. Everything was a breeze to setup calibration was straight forward and without complications. 3D is terrific on this passive set. So far I have have seen Lion King, Drive Angry, Monster House on Vudo 1080P 3D and Captain America.
For $629 you can't beat this set if your looking for something for a smaller room. And sorry I can't bring myself to watch any Step Up movie. I don't care how great the 3D is. |

Technically all CGI movies are converted to 3D. However, it's easier than live action cos all you gotta do is render alternate frames.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Man let me tell you the best 3D i have seen is the Open Season BD wow does that pop nicely! I also caught Hubble on one of the DirecTv 3D channels and that also was fantastic.

Pretty decent deal going on at Best Buy currently. $40 off if you buy 4 3D combo packs. Selection includes all 3 Toy Stories, Bolt, Chicken Little, and Cars 2 and G-Force. Comes out to $19.99 each except for Cars 2 which would be $29.99.

Thats not bad too bad they don't have a bigger selection for you to choose from.

(In reference to the Toy Story 3Ds)
^But, to clarify; If you buy the trilogy set, ALL you get are the 3D discs. |

No, in my clarification, I wasn't very clear. I was referring to the trilogy set and edited my original post to reflect that. If you buy the individual releases, you get the Blu Ray, DVD, Digital Copy, and 3D Blu Ray. If you buy the Toy Story 3D trilogy set, all you get are the individual 3D releases.

I have some other releases though that are authored to allow 2D playback, such as Coraline 3D and Resident Evil Afterlife 3D. |

It is technically possible, but enabling that feature is dependent on the disc author. Disney, for pretty much every release, makes it 3D-only on 3D discs, and if you put it in a 2D-only player, you just get a warning that says it only works in 3D players.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
The absolute best 3D is IMAX: Under the Sea. It has the most depth I have ever seen, looks like the screen stretches miles into the background in some shots.
Some of the BEST 3D quality ======================== Resident Evil Afterlife Avatar Pirates of the Caribbean Fountain of Youth How to Train your Dragon Tahiti Ultimate Wave (docu) Cloudy Monsters Vs. Aliens VERY GOOD QUALITY ================== Lion King 3D conversion is well done Pirhanna Megamind Narnia Dawn Treader Tron Legacy IMAX: Hubble 3D IMAX: Grand Canyon Adventure There are others but those are the ones that I feel the 3D is very good and "worth it" to watch over a 2D version. Other movies like Thor, Cap America, Harry Potter. Just stick to 2D, 3D is just not worth the lower brightness/vibrance. |

I don't know for certain, since I don't own either. :) But I believe the player detects whether it is able to negotiate a 3D video connection on the HDMI link, so if it is not able to negotiate 3D with the display, then it should only report 2D playback capable.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
^ That's what I was basically asking. I wasn't necessarily asking specifically about Disney titles because I didn't know they played any different, but if that studio's 3D discs won't play on 2D displays, that's something I wanted to know. Thanks.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I stopped in a Best Buy after work and they had a ton of the Deathly Hallows Part 2 3D BD. Probably 50-75. I couldn't find part 1, but wasn't looking too hard for it.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I thought the Blu-ray Association (or whatever it's called) had a rule about every 3D disc had to offer a 2D version as well. Did something change?
|
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Apparently- I've seen lots of complaints on Amazon about the Toy Story set that won't play on 2D players (which is REALLY funny for Disney considering most of their stuff has included every format imaginable like regular DVD and digital copy!) I have Tron Legacy and it plays the Disney intro then shows a message saying you need 3D equipment, the 2D version is included on a separate disc. Just got the last Harry Potter and that has a simpler message when you try and play that, again the 2D version is on another disc. (I don't have a 3D system yet but hopefully will eventually, so I buy everything I want in 3D as long as it also includes a 2D version I can watch now.)

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I caught Tahiti Ultimate Wave on one of the DirecTv 3D channels and that was an excellent doc and some of the best 3D to date.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I gave serious consideration this fall to upgrading my 5 year old Sony VW50 projector to this years 3D VW95ES model, but since I recently replaced the bulb, I've decided to wait until I see better price (sub $5k). But since I believe the upgrade is imminent, I've started purchasing 3D titles when I see a good deal.
Fry's had a couple great sales recently as I've picked up Resident Evil Afterlife, Polar Express, Legends of the Guardians, Final Destination 4, Captain America, Rio and Thor for $16 each, and last week I picked up Nightmare Before Christmas, Toy Story, Lion King and Beauty & the Beast for $17.50. Amazon also had the Tron Legacy bundle for $31 as a lightning deal. I sold off my non-3D versions of several of these titles and came out pretty close to even. All of the titles I purchased include the regular blu-ray copy separately, except for Resident Evil Afterlife. I was going to check that disc out on my PS3 to see if the 2D version is included and playable on the disc. If it plays correctly, then I may pick up some of the other 3D only movies like Piranha, Monster House, Monsters vs Aliens, etc, when I see them in that $16 price range again. |
