Seems a lot more likely to me they'd be holding it to release with the Coens' True Grit.

You might want to ask yourself what the point would be of delaying a Blu Ray release of a movie in order to piggyback on its foreign remake that made virtually no impact whatsoever in the US.

^ in for BOTH

Re: MGM Catalog Releases (Early 2011): Thelma & Louise, Blue Velvet, Rain Man, and mo
How much do you want to bet that MGM will stick the Midnight Cowboy commentary track (and possibly the extras as well) on a DVD?

Re: MGM Catalog Releases (Early 2011): Thelma & Louise, Blue Velvet, Rain Man, and mo
I'm in for Blue Velvet, Dead Man Walking, Platoon & Midnight Cowboy - I'll order the UK if the US ones suck.

Lynch said that "hopefully" some of those scenes will end up in an upcoming Blu-ray, although he also noted that some of them "aren't worth putting back together"). It will also feature a brand-new 5.1 mix supervised by Lynch and his sound engineer Dean Hurley.
As explained on the Blue Velvet special edition DVD released in 2002, the original cut of the film as assembled by Lynch had a running length of around four movies. However, his contract with producer Dino De Laurentiis obligated Lynch to deliver a two-hour movie so he had to perform extensive cuts, deleting whole scenes and subplots. During the interview, Lynch said that he had been seeking out all that deleted material, "because some of these scenes on their own would be beautiful to see again." However, he found out that De Laurentiis's company had been sold to other companies and neither the producer (who passed away in November 2010) nor anybody else knew where the unused and deleted footage was. So it is a stroke of luck that such a treasure trove has been unearthed. At the moment, Blue Velvet is still unannounced on Blu-ray in the US; it is coming out in France on February 16. |

Picked up Four Weddings over the weekend and I'm psyched for Thelma & Louise and Last Tango.

Great news on Blue Velvet, it sounds like the deleted footage is quite substantial.

Ooooooo a SE of Blue Velvet!!!! SCORE!

Re: MGM Catalog Releases (Early 2011): Thelma & Louise, Blue Velvet, Rain Man, and mo
It would be funny if they only found/used like 15 minutes of deleted stuff, given the original running length before cuts. Hopefully what they found is all or at least almost all of it, and it's in decent enough condition to be presented to us in HD.

Good god, the original cut was how long? I think we may discover that Lynch always needed a good editor to keep him in check.

also a few snippets of footage was cut from 'Blue Velvet' to avoid an X-rating.

From Blu-ray.com--
According to information from retail giant Walmart, 20th Century Fox will follow up its Blu-ray onslaught with a wave of titles from the MGM catalog, including Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959) for May 10 and The Hustler (50th Anniversary) (Robert Rossen, 1961) for May 17. Both will carry an MSRP of $34.99 and thus are likely to be presented in special-edition DigiBooks. The studio will also visit the western, with The Horse Soldiers (John Ford, 1959) on May 10 and The Comancheros (50th Anniversary) (Michael Curtiz, 1961) a week later, and the war genre, with Platoon (Oliver Stone, 1986) hitting BD also on May 17, and Tigerland (Joel Schumacher, 2000) on May 24. And there's more: fans of the Coen brothers will hit the roof when they know that not only is Miller's Crossing coming up, but also is Raising Arizona. |
Re: MGM Catalog Releases (Early 2011): Thelma & Louise, Blue Velvet, Rain Man, and mo
I'm definitely getting Some Like It Hot, and maybe The Hustler.
|
Re: MGM Catalog Releases (Early 2011): Thelma & Louise, Blue Velvet, Rain Man, and mo
Some like it Hot is great news. I was just wondering when we were going to get that the other day. I am in for all upgrades for Marilyn movies.
In for Platoon as well. |
