Maybe not overkill, but unrealistic.
How do you figure over kill or unrealistic. Bluray is comming into its own now.
It makes since that next year would be the start of really putting more movies out in the format. remember it was about this point they really started to push the animated features on DVD.

How do you figure it? You brought up the comparison to DVD, so back in DVD's heyday, when did Disney ever released more than 3 major animated titles in a calendar year?

Disney is by far my favorite studio when it comes to Blu-ray releases. They put out such a high quality product. I'm pumped for 6 next year and hope it holds up. But would definitely take more.

And I know it's not a "classic" yet... but we can obviously expect Winnie The Pooh (2011) in the fall.

According to this, they released 14 in 2000, and that's just the Animation Classics. There are also 3 sequels and 1 Pixar movie. Of course, for those Animated Classics, there were probably at most 2 "Platinum" releases, but then again, that's also the case for 2011.

To sort out the "major" ones from 2000, I'd say they are The Aristocats, Fantasia, The Black Cauldron, The Fox and the Hound, Hercules, Pocahontas and Robin Hood. Maybe you could eliminate Aristocats and Black Cauldron, but that would still give around 5, which is on par with this. That's not counting the new release (Tarzan) either.

It's more about the titles themselves that make me think Disney will delay some titles.

So far they've listed Bambi, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland and the Incredibles. As well as the inevitable releases for Winnie the Pooh (and who knows if they'll curve ball us with a Blu release of the previous Pooh - probably wishful thinking) as well as Cars 2 and Tangled. These aren't exactly lower tier titles from the animated line. Thats already 7 titles, am I happy yes, but that seems like a lot.

And that's not even touching their live actions films that are supposedly in the works. Either Disney is plotting a huge year for Blu Ray, or something is going to end up on the chopping block.

Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

Who knows what the life expectancy of the blu-ray format is though? Eventually, it may succumb to digital downloads. It's smart of Disney to get as many titles out in the marketplace as soon as it can. Get people to buy in this format (like we have on VHS and DVD) before moving on to the next.

The Disney titles will always be the most sought after by any studio. Most Disney fans don't just buy one or two of the titles, we get them all - or very close to it. Disney knows that the only thing holding back sales of its titles are not having them in the marketplace. They probably just want to make sure they have a lot of titles out there knowing that there are people new to blu-ray everyday. It doesn't make sense to not have product out there for people to buy.

With VHS, they were able to go into the "vault" 2 or 3 times per title before the format died. I imaging the "vault" idea with blu-ray is a sales tactic for their initial release. I don't know if blu will last long enough for them to double-dip into peoples pockets. I'm actually a bit surprised they aren't retiring titles a lot sooner in order to build a market for its re-release and a hysteria to make people buy them the first time around. Maybe Fantasia is their first attempt of doing so if the rumors of a January 2011 retirement are true.

I can name you 3, Heck i can do you even better! They released 8 MAJOR Animation Catalog titles in 1 and a half months.
The very first year they released their animated titles on bluray.
Between october 26 and December 7 1999
Disney issued 9 limited issue dvds including the following animated classics

Pinnochio
Peter Pan
Jungle Book
Little Mermaid
Hercules
Mulan
101 Dalmations
Lady and the Tramp
plus the Direct to video Lion King 2 Simbas Pride.

keep in mind these were released in a 1 and 1/2 month period.
Further more at the height of DVD popularity there was essentially atleast 1 new animated release on dvd every month or 2.

Ive mentioned this earlier in the thread but now that disney has posted it on their youtube page in HD here is a link. This is the count up clip they showed right at the start of the tangled cast and crew screening on October 16th this year.
And its also going to show up as a special feature on the BD.
it was so cool seeing this on the screen prior to the start of the film.

Just a heads up Disneys El Capitan is now selling tickets for a limited engagement 2 week run of Little Mermaid Featuring a "brand New HD restoration" as it says on the marquee at the theatre.
I know Mermaid is still aways off in its bluray release, but thought anyone who lives in driving distance of Hollywood might be intrested in checking this out in January.

as far as I can tell, the Virginia Film Festival last month showed a DLP (not a 35mm print) presentation of 'The Little Mermaid' at the historic Paramount Theater in Charlottesville Virginia

I can't convince myself to pull the trigger on this deal. % off, it's a great deal, but as mentioned, the version without 3D will likely be around $10 to $15 after coupon locally. Perhaps, this coupon will work on the non-3D edition when it is available to order from Amazon.

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I'll take all the 3D I can get. Always have the option of watching them in 2D if I'm disappointed with the conversions.

I'm not planning on getting a 3D TV (or projector) for quite some time (my main system is my front projector), so spending an extra $5 to $10 for a 3D version is pretty much wasted money at this point. I am a big fan of the concept though, but the roll out is too slow for me to spend the extra money to replace what I have right now.

Might be dead. I'm not seeing the coupon, unless they remove it once you use it.

The item shows as $29.99. The coupon appears on the same page. You have to click the word Clip. When you finalize your order, $8 will be deducted from the price. I did this 2 days ago, so the coupon no longer appears for me when I go to the page.

I logged out to see if it was a matter of having used it and it's still not there. Looks like it may be dead... for now. Chances are it will show back up.

Strange...it still shows up for me when I am logged into my account and I go to Tangled 3D and scroll down the page. It's a small click on button on the left hand side of the page.

Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

I am looking forward to seeing the following titles on Blu Ray : Bambi , Alice in Wonderland , and The Lion King , and hopefully (?) in another year's time Cinderella , 101 Dalmatians does anyone here know what other titles are expected in 2012?

I am still spitting blood regarding the Snow White Blu Ray's non inclusion of The Witch At The Cauldron deleted sequence which was included in the 1993 Laserdisc release in both finished form and the Pencil Test versions!
