re: Star Wars

Spike is getting its last marathon before the blurays are out, this labor day weekend. There is also going to be a preview of the extras.

That's a huge waste of promotional expenses. I mean, don't they realize that there are currently 160 1-star reviews on Amazon?

I agree with the people who reference Blade Runner. Lucas should release a set that contains both the theatrical and director's cut of each film. (I can't write "final cut" because Lucas keeps making changes...for the worse). Refusing to do so, especially given the demand, makes NO SENSE.

I will rent the films in this set, but I will NOT buy them.

This thought did occur to me. Remember - we are talking about the same jerk who released Episode I during the rise of DVD on... VHS only!!! Then a few short months later it was announced a DVD release was coming.

I'd buy the original Star Wars films on BD in a heartbeat. But these are not the original Star Wars films.

Lucas is older than me. I can wait him out.

re: Star Wars

just think, the trilogy will one day belong to Katie Lucas, and she will milk it for all it's worth. I'm sure we will see a new release every year. She's about twice George's size, so i'm sure her ego is as well.

In the least, he should take a note from his friend Steven Spielberg and release both cuts in a set ala E.T.

Considering how strongly outspoken Spielberg has been lately about not altering films, it's too bad he couldn't talk George into putting both cuts in the set.

I agree. In fact, if they put out this set with the originals intact, I'm betting most people would have actually paid MORE for it. Or even released the originals bare-bones and left all the bonus materials on this set (so you would have to buy BOTH sets to get everything). We've all double-dipped for lesser movies, and would gladly do so with this.

I believe this is why Lucas gets such an "evil" reputation. It's not just that he's not releasing the originals; it's that it looks like it would be easy to do, he'd make more money...but he won't do it anyway.

Add me to this list. Just canceled. I want Star Wars in my kids' lives since it meant so much to me growing up, but I don't want these versions being the ones they grow up knowing.

I'm done with George's bullshit.

Yeah, I'm out. I love the OT but it's just not the OT anymore, it's some bastardized extension of the PT and I'm just not willing to drop money on it at this point.

re: Star Wars

I'm still getting the set. Are some of the changes bad? Yes. Are they bad enough to make me avoid the release? No. Noooooooo!

I'm still looking forward to revisiting the series, especially eager to hear the DTS 6.1 mixes. I got the gold box offer today of $85.49. I had some Amazon credit and a promo code to use, so it'll be $49 out of pocket. I can handle that.

re: Star Wars

But you could have used that same credit on things worth (re)visiting. Your math is suspect

Other things have better sound. Sound, even, that's been treated with respect. Scores and soundtracks for that matter as well.

re: Star Wars

By coincidence I canceled my pre-order yesterday, because I am cutting down on purchases. Just found out about this news today, and...not sure what my decision would be. Those extra features are enticing, I would probably pay for those by themselves. But I still haven't watched all of my Star Wars DVDs from 2004, or the Ep. IV double dip from '06 so maybe it's for the best.

It hasn't been the "OT" since 1997, from a certain point of view.

re: Star Wars

Andywan does say the "father" line was muted in order to get Vader's line in:

georgec said:

R.e. Luke's "Father, please," that comes some moments before Darth's "Noo. Nooooo!" line. I haven't watched the rips, but based on previous versions of these movies it would not be necessary to remove Luke's line in order to add Vader's line. In other words, the order of lines/events in the original scene is:

"Father, please."

"Now, young Skywalker, you will die."

More force lightning.

Vader tosses Palps.

But, adywan and others have watched the rips, so if it's true then it makes no sense at all to me. Those two lines come at different moments.

no, it's his last plea "father" right before he pick up the emperor that is now almost gone because they have lowered the dialogue and drowned the remains of it underneath the first No.

So I found pretty much my favorite Internet post ever on the Blu-ray.com forums:

I would be so disappointed if this guy turned out to be a troll, though I would begrudgingly admit he was among the best trolls ever.

I think he's sincere though and that's why nobody takes the UOT fanatics seriously. 10 times the nerd rage we've experienced in the last couple days wouldn't stop this from becoming the biggest catalog/box set release of the Blu-ray format. So the end result is a small group of zealots whose obsession with something that is ultimately frivolous winds up being dwarfed by their utter inability to get what they want.

Remember that video of the pie in the face some PETA member gave to the canadian prime minister? Can't someone just do that to George Lucas? Really that would be enough for me.

re: Star Wars

He couldn't make three movies that paralleled the original three adequately so instead he dumbs-down the original three to parallel the shitty ones.

It makes Pefectly sense. He's going to get you to buy it again. He'll milk the shit out of these bastardized versions (blu-ray, 3d to theaters, 3d blu-ray) for the next 10 years, then he'll do it all over again with the original versions.

He's turned one product into at least 6 different major releases (maybe even more if he comes out with a hybrid version as well - updated graphics + Jabba scene, etc. but controversial stuff left out). Fucking brilliant. He's going to make it so you have no choice but to cave and buy things you don't really want (unless you can stand your shitty DVD copies for the next 10 years) and then he'll come out with the product you really want.

I guarantee you there are remastered versions of each of the original unaltered versions in a can somewhere. And when they do the 3d conversions, the originals will be done at the same time.

He's doing this all on purpose folks. Is he really that shrewd? Yes, yes he is.

That does make perfect sense because if he released them now, he wouldn't have been able to release these altered versions because people wouldn't want to bother with them. It's not like one original version and one director's or extended cut. So by releasing alteration after alteration, then releasing (speculation of course) the original, he's got customer's cash in hand. Once those originals get out, there's not much to do beyond that in terms of the films themselves (only thing to do would be more extras like a more traditional special edition release), so you're right it does make perfect sense.
