I have no desire whatsoever to even consider the very fact that the prequels even exist, but I am curious as to what, if anything, will be corrected with the not-so-originals. The "Greedo shoots first" thing doesn't matter to me nearly as much as the "Vader says something out of a Star Wars spoof commercial and stops the film dead so he can go home to his ship" scene in "The Empire Strikes Back". I swear if they just cut that shit out I'd be happy with it and would let any other issues slide...a little. |

Great report so far. You have to read between the usual Lucasfilm spin, but it definitely sounds like some of the issues have been taken care of. Too bad these weren't coming out Labor Day wknd, I'd do a marathon.

One of the techniques that has been used previously from mixers is to give it a bigger soundstage---they would have flipped the back channel to give it a different kind of reverb. And that was done on the THX 1138 remaster, which I didn’t work on. For this go-round (6.1) we decided not to do that, so the surround information is direct to the back, no longer flipped on the music track. |

I'm still not planning on camping out in front of Best Buy for this or anything, but if I find a deal on it down the road I'll feel better about picking it up, rather than doing it out of some sense of obligation to the franchise.

So its official: no theatrical versions included with the original trilogy. Such a shame that Lucas doesn't understand that a lot of people want remastered, unrevised films to go along with the updated version. This is a no sale for me unfortunately.

The first scene he showed us was the beginning of the assault on the Death Star at the end of Episode IV. Now, I suspect he showed us this scene for exactly the thing I noticed immediately upon previewing it. Some of you may recall that on the 2004 DVD, when the X-Wings begin their dive down to the Death Star, the familiar John Williams trumpet fanfare was buried in the mix so you could barely hear it. No longer! The trumpets ring true in the Blu-ray mix loud and clear. When I heard this, I couldn't help thrusting my arms up in the air in a bit of happy relief. I then turned to Matt, who as it happens was standing right next to me, and saw him give a little smile and nod - he knew exactly what I was reacting to. When I leaned over to thank him for fixing it, his simple reply made me smile as well: "Trust me, I read the blogs too..." When I read something like this, it at least gives me the hope that they truly did take the time to fix MOST of what we have complained about over the years. I am especially looking forward to this part of the movie now, because I know the 1st time I heard it on the DVD I like most fans were like WTF?!?! happened there. While we will not get the "original" trilogy as we have wanted, I will definitely be getting this set. And I think Ringmaster just stated it, but I guarantee Lucas realizes that a lot of people want that like myself. But the simple fact is he could probably give a rat's behind what we ultimately want. |

I don't see how anybody could have been expecting the original versions of the OT. Those are long gone.
This set will receive rave reviews from all the major outlets. If there are flaws the reviewers will downplay them. Nobody's going to dare piss of Lucas or Fox by giving this set a bad review. |
