I have the VHS release from the early '90's and tried to watch it a couple of years ago and my VCR ate it!

That artwork is awful. Who wants baby Anakin on the cover, and the other two are marred by a gazillion floating faces.

So no original trilogy theatrical versions?

This did nothing to help me justify my pre-order to myself. I was already doubting if I could bring myself to care and I hoped today could make me excited. I may end up cancelling it before it ships in September. What isn't going to help Star Wars is the fact that I'm getting the LotR:EE trilogy in June and seeing Harry Potter finish in July. Two other series that told a complete, satisfying, and thought-out story from start to end.

Maybe I'll just get the OT instead of the Saga...

Ah, man, pretty disappointed, I think all I was expecting was nice cover arts, couldn't even get that.

Some of the specials and deleted scenes might be interesting. They better have the trailers... I want the VHS trailers...

I pre-ordered the Complete Saga from B&N for ~$40 after discounts, so I'll probably hang onto that for now as more details come out. My feeling is that I'll end up canceling the order or just selling the set on ebay/craigslist for a tiny profit.

I think I would like the artwork for the complete saga better if the black bar beneath the Blu-ray logo was removed, or changed to the blue bar on the individual sets. The black bar looks messy.

I was excited to see what Lucas was going to offer, but I feel no excitement over the details here. Often I will read through the specs on an upcoming Blu-ray set and get a sense that everything included is must-own. I got that from the Alien Anthology set, and I'm not even a real fan of that series.

There are some interesting tidbits, but nothing special. Nothing that's going to prompt me to go to Best Buy on release day, or any time soon after then. I buy Blu-ray versions of DVDs I own when I deem the Blu-ray a solid upgrade. This is not.

I still want to know more about the movies themselves, what new changes Lucas has ordered. And the deleted scenes might be of interest. But none of that is enough to get me to buy again. Not right now.

I personally feel the chopped-together-from-various-interviews 2nd commentary tracks are not a special feature at all. The original interviews? Sure, ok, but not like this.

On one hand, the history major in me likes the idea of presenting the entirety of the interviews so that we have access to them fully. On the other hand, I think that there's likely a lot of overlap of remarks and shared anecdotes and I suspect that the cherry-picked consolidation is designed to be the most entertaining and rewarding. Like I said previously, I'm imagining something in the same template as the compilation commentary tracks on the Bond DVDs. Those were perfectly satisfying to me, and I suspect these will be, too.

Right, but you also have to assume one of two scenarios:

1) The interview segments chosen will correspond to the run-time of the feature. What's going on in the movie will, more or less, be what's being discussed on the commentary. Pigeonhole Principle states that they can't discuss everything and/or nothing will be fully addressed.

2) The interview segments chosen will not correspond to the run-time of the feature. If so, why bother making it an audio commentary at all? Just have the same spliced-together video segments as a stand-alone feature.

Question, so the special features from the prequel DVDs are only available on the Complete Saga set?

No, each of the trilogy sets comes with their respective bonus disc, the 9th disc of new/old documentaries is exclusive to the complete set. But right now it's looking like most of the DVD special features are not included at all, so you'll want to hang onto those.

In this scenario, then, Lucasfilm has selected what they feel are the most interesting remarks about a given scene or sequence from those discussing it. Peter Mayhew won't have anything insightful to say about the Death Star trench assault, so we'll hear from someone at ILM during that sequence. Conversely, instead of the ILM guy, maybe it'll be David Prowse reminiscing about dueling with Sir Alec Guinness. Do we need to hear what each party has to say about the entire film, including portions they had nothing to do with?

For one, the interviews may have been recorded as audio only. Also I'm not in the camp that believes a commentary needs to be scene-specific to be of interest. And, again, it may sound good now to have the entirety of these interviews all presented as bonus features, but I suspect they would become tiresome and uninteresting en masse for most.

Obviously I was talking more about missing other interesting things because the previous convo went on too long. Or having the previous one cut short to move on to the next interesting scene.

If the movie is just a back-drop and there's no correlation to the commentary, then why bother?

In other non-news: meh. I really do think I'm out finally. My entire life has been a Star Wars fan. Only in the last 5 years have I found myself pulling away. I was the biggest TPM apologist I knew so it's really super-disappointing to me to be done and not even want to continue to share it with my kids.

So basically, I need the Complete Saga set if I want bonus materials? And we still won't get the original trilogy releases (and we have no info on possible new changes)?

I also like how they plastered the trilogy numbers on the spines of the individual prequel and original trilogy releases. They basically did that so that fans who only want the original films will be annoyed. That's my theory of the moment, anyway.

Unless i read the specs wrong, it looks like this ultimate blu set is missing the 2.5 hour empire of dreams doc, the great 'within a min doc' on episode 3, and there was a great fly on the wall doc for episode one. Unless thats what the disc 7 and 8 "archive" section is

Why would that annoy a fan? Empire and Jedi have been Episodes 5 & 6, respectively, from day one and I don't know of any fans who object to Star Wars being Episode 4.
