re: Star Wars
Am I safe in assuming that this release is just the altered versions repackaged?
It looks like the Blu-ray only Trilogy packs have gone out of print. The Complete Saga release is still available though.

Dude's crazy like a fox. I guarantee you restored and remastered versions of the originals exist and were done when the SE's were remastered for Blu.
By having the SE's, he's created a whole other product. They'll cram the SE's down our throat again in 3d eventually and we'll all buy them. Then, a few years later, they'll come out with the Un-altered originals and we'll all buy them again. Then, a few years after that, 3d versions of the originals.
He knows what we want. But he also knows we'll buy the crappy SE's until originals are finally released. It's a whole other "product" he's created.
However, now that Kennedy is in charge, I don't know if she's up for those games. She seems to be very no-nonsense. She's pretty much dis-owning the prequels and seems to be very pro-original trilogy. She's also shrewd enough to know she'd look like a savior to SW fans if she'd release the originals.

DVD has peaked, if he was holding off to release the originals then he missed the window of opportunity. He had the chance to start the string of releases on DVD way back in 1997 when the SEs were released on VHS and LD. There's been rumors for years that a DVD release was *this* close to being done, but pulled back at the last minute. Even though it was the SE's, having something of the OT on DVD before 2004 would have done a lot to take pressure off them to do something.
And there have been multiple opportunities to release good versions of the originals and he has bypassed them all, only to foist the old LD transfer discs on us.
I do hope you're right about Kathleen Kennedy, and I'm hoping Disney won't want to leave anything off the shelves if it will make them a few bucks.

these things ad infinitum adding a few deleted scenes here, a few documentaries there, but that's never been the case. His only real sin is insisting on making dumb changes to his movies every couple of years and in the process wiping the previous versions from history. I'm surprised he even allows the TV versions, which are the dvd versions, to air seeing as how they are in conflict with his 'original vision' as represented on the BDs.

People always say stuff like this, but I've never seen anything that supports this. Sure, things get repackaged over and over in different configurations, but there's only been one version of the movies on dvd (don't get me started on those crappy "bonus" discs) and so far there's been only one version on blu-ray. When do you think this master plan of his to finally release the originals on the unsuspecting public will come to fruition? Look, I'm no Lucas defender. The last version of the OT I purchased was the SE VHS set, but I've never seen him as the manipulative money grubber that people paint him as. Lucasfilm has got so much crap in their vaults that they could re-release

They should have put out a barebones version of the OT in 1999 to coincide with Episode I. It could have been a remastered OOT & SE in a 6 disk set. That would have kept ALL the fans happy and then Lucas could have done whatever he wanted to after that in terms of changes. But their rationale at the time was that they wanted to wait til the market was bigger, yet most people I know were holding off buying DVD players until big franchies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Godfather were all coming out.
He then could have released the OT Boxset to coincide with the release of either Episode II or III DVD's. This boxset could have be the updated changes, documentaries, trailers, etc.
Instead he waited til 2004 to release the OT/SE only, and then a half-ass OOT non-anamorphic in 2006 when everyone was preparing for BluRay and totally alienated a good chunk of fans by then.

re: Star Wars
It appears that he felt the DVD versions of the films were going to be close to "definitive". He didn't want to release any of the films on DVD until the prequel trilogy was completed. It was only market forces that made him release the prequels as they came out (with a delay for Ep 1), and then the OT.
For the OOT, Lucas didn't want them released, and didn't want to do any work on restoring them. Using an old Laserdisc master to put them on DVD as a "bonus disc" was a sort of compromise. He didn't care that they weren't good enough for Blu-ray or anything.
It's somewhat fortunate for fans that Lucas felt that Lucasfilm needed to make money. If he didn't have that commitment to keeping the company operational, we likely would've sat on the OOT completely, as well as sitting on even the SEs until he was done tweaking them to his liking.

"You see, Sweetie, the story has actually always been this way. You just misinterpreted it. If you don't stop questioning me, I won't tell you stories anymore. Why would I tell any more, when everybody yells at me all the time and says what a terrible person I am? I have completed my task as a man and a bedtime storyteller."

Target has the new combo packs for $34.99 each. I got my copy at Walmart and their sticker price was also $34.96. The discs come in a 6-disc case.

I would imagine they use the Blu-ray cuts on the DVDs, but I can't find anything that confirms that. It doesn't look like any review copies were sent out, and none of the other forums I frequent has anyone that had bought them.

Pretty sure the Blinking Ewok in ROTJ was first on the Bluray. Can't remember which specific scene that is though.

re: Star Wars
A Basic list of the most significant changes:
http://screenrant.com/star-wars-blur...s-benm-131712/
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- There are computer-generated rocks in front of R2-D2 while he’s hiding in the canyon; however, they’re “magically not there” after he comes out of hiding
- Obi-Wan’s fake “Krayt Dragon” roar is once again altered and it sounds “hideous”; keep the mute button at the ready
- Greedo shoots first – again – but this time with slightly fewer frames than the previous release
- Luke’s lightsaber while training on the Millennium Falcon is back to being “white” and “blue” as it was originally – it is no longer pale green, per the 2004 DVD release
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Flames have been added to the probe droid crater
- Most of the blue tint on Hoth is gone
- The Wampa arm is “fixed” — whatever that means — but it’s still imperfect
- R2-D2’s once black panels are now blue in space
- A la the DVD release, Emperor Palpatine – via hologram – is still played by Ian McDiarmid in his Revenge of the Sith makeup
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- The static shot of C3PO and R2-D2 approaching Jabba’s palace has been replaced by a “wide pan with a huge door”; the door is now peppered with laser blast impacts
- Han Solo’s “carbonite thaw” is now CGI
- A computer-generated “Dug” from the prequels (Sebulba, the evil racer who podraced Anakin in The Phantom Menace, was a dug) is seen walking across the screen after Luke infiltrates Jabba’s palace; the dug looks “really fake, like it was [added at the] last minute”
- Wicket the Ewok now has computer-generated, blinking eyes
- Darth Vadar says “No” several times as he picks up Emperor Palpatine and tosses him into the Death Star reactor core; the “Nos” seem to be sampled from The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith, respectively
