TPM in particular has an atrocious plot that is both dumb and convoluted, terrible pacing, bad acting and tin-eared dialogue. Not to mention one of the single most grating characters ever put on the big screen.

Now, I Love the original Star Wars, but I can admit it's not perfect. TPM, on the other hand, is just on a whole other level of bad. I will admit that the effects are visually impressive in places, but parts like the space battle at the end, while visually impressive, just aren't as tension-filled and exciting as the original trench battle. And if I ever just rewatched a part of TPM, it'd be the Darth Maul end lightsaber battle, but one impressive fight sequence does not a good movie make.

I agree that "no movie could live up to the nostalgia felt for the OT," but even with severely reduced expectations, the PT still fall short. I mean, I went into Ep3 with about as low as expectations could go, and even then I cringed at many places in it.

+1 to pretty much everything here.

The main reasons that TPM is so bad (in my opinion) are:
-- The non-sensical and uninteresting plot
-- Weak direction and editing
-- Overuse/abuse of CGI
-- Jar Jar Binks

The Phantom Menace is just not a very good movie, period, and unlike the OT, most of its flaws are not even remotely charming/endearing in nature.

TPM doesnt really abuse/overuse CGI at all

One of the reasons it smashed global sales records is that the Blu-ray format has been MUCH more widely accepted in Europe (and I'm assuming Japan as well, since that's the "country of origin") than it has here in the United States.

What I want to know is if ANYONE has found any other Easter Eggs than the Boba Fett cartoon? We were given the impression that there were multiple eggs on the discs, but that seems to be the only one. I was hoping at least we'd find some hidden trailers or something.

I agree that TPM is easily the worst of the series. But I think ROTS is a very good movie, especially the last hour. Hayden catches a lot of flack for his awful work in AOTC, but he redeemed himself imo with ROTS. Sure there are a few wooden moments but overall he got the job done.

I disagree. Perhaps it's a matter of taste, but the way CGI was used in TPM (and all the prequels, really) makes it feel disconnected from the established Star Wars universe and actually kept me from being more invested in the action on a number of occasions. I can't deny that some of the CGI is dazzling and awesome, but Lucas carried it too far and lost me.

And I'm not anti-CGI by any means. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a good example of CGI used in a more balanced and ultimately, more cinematically-effective way.

There is ONE shot in the whole movie that doesn't have any CG enhancement. ONE. How the hell is that not an abuse/overuse of CGI?

Nope lol I'm betting there's 1 or 2 easter eggs left to be found, but we'll probably have to wait for LFL to release the details of how to locate them.

If you wanted a $90 warmed-over turd in 1080p, you got one. Congratulations. For me, there is no price point that could entice me to add this to my collezione.

Totally agree with this post!

I may have a copy but certainly didnt spent $90 for it ... got it at Target for $55 tax inclusive (*got a $30 off after complaining to them about the not having the advertised "Litograph")

I can't believe companies are still putting easter eggs on their discs. I can't remember the last time I even thought about it.

At the beginning when the 2 Jedi start to get gassed in the conference room. The close up shot of the vent with the gas coming out of it is the one I'm talking about. Only reason I know is they make a big deal of it in the commentary.

Well, I'm glad that's settled. There must be some other reason I feel like I'm watching video game cutscenes when watching the prequels.

I heard GL is not happy with the way that came out and it will be replaced with CGI gas that's more in keeping with his vision of the scene back in the
70s.

I think the Red Letter Media/Plinkett reviews of all three films pretty much sums up why all 3 suck so bad.

re: Star Wars

To me the positives about Phantom Menace are:

-Obi-Wan isn't the wise man he becomes so he's pretty casual. I like his attitude.
-The sort-of running gag of how ridiculous Amidala's costumes are in every scene, since they get more and more over the top in each scene.
-The parallels of having R2 play a part in two Skywalker space flight battles.
-The droid soldiers getting cut down like butter.
-Darth Maul and his dual-sided lightsaber (love the LFE in the sound mix for it)

Sort of lukewarm to the Podrace. It just goes on too long.

I think if the Gungans weren't so goofy and childish, the movie would not have been AS bad. They really do a number on it.

Huge +1.

The prequels were terrible, terrible films which effectively broke "Star Wars". Since their release every change George Lucas has made to the OT has been to drag them down to the same level as the new films.

A lot of good points in the first two, but for Sith he's really stretching a few too many times. It's not that bad a movie.

I absolutely love his "grading" of Anakin's interaction with Padme.

Phantom Menace sucks because of Jar Jar.

Had no idea so many people hated Attack Of The Clones. Must be some sort of internet mania or something. It's one of my favorite movies of all six. The last 40 minutes rollercoaster ride of non-stop action can't be beat.

Michael Corvin 09-26-11 08:46 PM

Outside the non chemistry and ridiculous dialog between Anakin & Padme I like Clones as well.

Eh, his reviews are extremely overrated and unfunny.

I don't like Clones, but it has it's moments.

Well, it looks like you haters are going to continue to gripe and moan. That's your loss because you are costing yourselves an unbelievably awesome experience.

Personally, if I could only keep one Blu-ray or DVD title and was forced to get rid of the rest of my collection, I would keep the Star Wars Saga. It's that good. However, you haters choose to turn a blind eye to that and it's very pathetic and sad.

If you enjoy the SE & PT movies thats cool with me, but please don't call people like me a hater. I'm not wasting 90 bucks on 3 PT movies I could care less about, and 3 SE/OT movies that annoy me because of the stupid changes.

Whats sad and pathetic is people like you who call fans like me 'haters' because I don't enjoy all the new changes, and people on my side who call fans idiots because they like the PT and SE movies.

Plain and simple, the SE don't work for me, why am I a hater??? Godfather III didn't work me? Superman III & IV didn't work for me? Rocky V didn't work for me? Am I a hater for all those movies too?

+1. Well said friend. And I have the Star Wars Saga BD, and love it. But that doen't mean that you are stupid for not buying it (although I do really love this BD set. The movies look phenomenal!).

You are not entirely wrong, but I was impressed by the supplements for Ep I on the blu ray. These new supplements show that an incredible amount of models were used for many things in TPM that I thought were completely CGI (like the Droid Control Ship).
