Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I was referring to the fact they are not on the same disc.
I love these "triple plays". I just bought the Losers and have given my mum the DVD as they have no BD player yet. I still haven't got my Holmes DVD from them! I see Mr Saltys point about space on the DVD given over to better AV and AQ but if that DVD hasn't got all the extras then there should be enough for both. It would save on production costs at least. |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
No DVD and DC on same disc is a waste. Out of curiosity i have watched some scenes of these DVD versions and Outside the fact that these are in SD, didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Warner is the only studio that will create a specific DVD to put in the Blu-ray edition, a DVD that provides your standard-definition copy plus your digital copies (one for WMV, another for MPEG-4). However, for those who actually watch the DVD, you're going to notice more-than-usual compression. The digital copies portion of Clash of the Titans, a 107 minute film, takes up 3.5GB. You're now only left with 4GB for the film itself. The shorter the film, the better as one may not notice the compression; but the longer the film (say The Informant!), you're going to notice the compression. I did compare scenes on The Final Destination and Ninja Assasin BDs compared with the DVDs that came them and it was night-and-day. If you wanted someone to switch over to Blu, compare both of these titles on a 50" HDTV.
What I've noticed with Kick-Ass, is that the DVD included is bare-bones... almost as if it was created for rental purposes or for the Blu-ray itself. Nothing from your retail DVD (audio commentary, the 20-minute featurette or the promotional material) are found on the DVD included, but they're all on the BD. Studios like Disney and Fox/MGM include the standard retail DVDs (like James and the Giant Peach which includes the original Special Edition DVD release). Personally, I'd rather take a DVD over a Digital Copy. |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I'd rather have the standard retail DVD and give up the digital copy.

Didn't see any alternate cover, but UK has a lovely box set and other countries have some nice packaging and various cover art as well. Click here to check it out.
I already have the UK steelbook and UK Collector's Edition pre-ordered. |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I watched it tonight and definitely enjoyed it. Took a little time to get going, mostly since he was so awkward. I'll spend some more time with it this weekend to watch the bonus features.

I purchased Kick-Ass today at Best Buy. The audio is fantastic but the video sports a really schizophrenic transfer. It keeps flip-flopping from grainy and detailed to DNR'ed and waxy (with some minor ringing to boot) with no rhyme or reason. It still looks good overall but the inconsistensy of the transfer gets really annoying.

That's exactly how the film looked in theaters. It's a perfectly accurate transfer.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Did anyone have issues with the bonus features? When I go into "The Making of Kick-Ass" the screen freezes up but the counter continues to run. Happens on both of my Sony BD players.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
This disc has some major loading problems. Took forever.
|
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Typical Lionsgate menus... I don't remember which title it was, might have been The Spirit, but I remember it took forever to load as well.
|
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I've never encountered loading issues on any Lionsgate film.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I'm going to exchange mine. Hopefully I just got a bum disc...

Blu-rays having to load... this effing format.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Ok, I tried this again with both players with the same result:
"A New Kind Of SuperHero: The Making of Kick-Ass" "Play All" Counter reads up to 000.02 then freezes with blank screen then jumps to 000.26 then freezes with blank screen then jumps to 001.12 then freezes with blank screen then jumps to 002.18 then seems to plays fine. If I try to back it up to get to the beginnng of the featurette the disc freezes up completely until I have to stop the disc and start over again. If I do not use the play all feature and just go to the "Pushing Boundries" featurette I get the same results as using the play all function. When I jump to "Let's Shoot This F*****!" or any other of the bonus features it plays fine past the "Pushing Boundries" featurette. Was worried that it was my player but tried to 2 different players with the same results. I shot off an e-mail to Loinsgate as well to see what they say. |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
^ taco...i did not have any problems at all with the making-of.
was surprised at the nearly 2hr. runtime. that should be fun. and only about 2min. load time in total on Sony. |

On my Insignia, both this title and From Paris With Love took forever. Close to three-to-four minutes for both titles. |

I don't think that "DNR'ed" is the right term in this case. The movie has quite a bit of the digital airbrushing effect on actors' faces, similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Sweeney Todd. As much of an annoyance as this is, it was deliberate.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I guess third time's the charm. Plays flawlessly.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I really thought this disc wasn't going to load when I put it in the player... it totally gave my Insignia WBRDVD a senior moment. Once it did load after 2-3 minutes, it was fine however. I haven't had such a long load since Fargo.
Great movie though... there's a few things I wish they would have touched on from the graphic novel like... Spoiler:
I think the ending is a bit different because the comic had not been finished when the movie wrapped, correct? |

Not sure what their meaninng is since this was a special feature on the disc and not something to be downloaded:
Please try putting additional memory in your player such as an external USB drive. This title needs requires additional memory to play. Please contact us again if you are still unable to view blu-ray correctly. Thank you LionsGate Customer Service Not that it matters at this time since it looks like I just got a bad disc. |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Did this come with a slipcover? I read that it does have one, but I went to a Barnes & Noble today & they had a bunch of copies with NO sleeves.
|
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
It has a slipcover, but it's the same as cover underneath so you're not really missing anything.
|
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Barnes and Noble throws away the slipcovers to all the films when they come in at my store.... Because they're fucks.

Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
Was at COSTCO today and saw what is probably the safe cover. They had a circlular sticker over the SS so the cover said KICK A. Too bad the back of the cover and side still said KICK ASS.
|
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I worked at Barnes and Noble in the music/DVD section and I can confirm that we took slipcovers off because they were a security problem. The sensors were put on the sleeves, and then people could just slip the covers off and walk out with them. So, no sleeves.
As a DVD enthusiast it bothered me and I tried to get them to keep the covers behind the counter and give them out when someone bought the DVD, but no one wanted to go through the trouble, and when i tried doing it on my own it took up too much space behing the counter so I relented... |
Re: Kick-Ass (Blu + DVD + Digital Copy) --> August 3rd!
I have a Sony BDP-S360 and I got Kick-Ass through Netflix.
The thing took forever to show up and then took another few minutes to load. I watched over an hour of the movie and then it just froze up. The whole player was gone and I had to unplug it. Tried again, sat through the load, and it froze up again. I still had 30 minutes or so to watch but I packaged it back up and sent it back. Anyone else have this player and experienced problems? |
