Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

Amazon now has a listing for The Evil Dead with a August 31, 2010. No other info about it yet, hopefully they'll include a copy of the full frame release and not just the relatively new cropped widescreen release.

I'll wait for some reviews and get this depending on the PQ.

Anchor Bay....it'll be $10 in no time.

Hopefully it's not a bare-bones release like some of their latest blu releases...

That's what I was thinking. I have the Ultimate, which I got last year...I don't think I'll be getting this new one unless there's the features from the Ultimate and more....how about more commentaries? I'd like an Ash Commentary.

I have like 14 different versions, what's 1 more?

I'm sure Xage knows about this by now.

Hopefully each retailer will have an exclusive so he can get more than one copy on Blu... ;)

Hopefully, it'll include all the extras from the Ultimate Edition. I certainly want to grab this, so that I can complete the trilogy on Blu.

No Within the Woods = no sale ;)

I'll probably bite at the right price, pending reviews.

This would be great. It would also be great to get the bulky Ultimate Edtition off my shelf haha

As I have noted a few years ago, Ultimate was missing a recorded commentary from the Ladies of the Evil Dead (that was mentioned in one of the new featurettes). Hopefully the blu will include this one.
But I'll have to get it no matter what. I might not be Xage, but as a fan I owe it to myself to own a copy of each film in high definition.

What are the over/under odds that the release will have both the 1.33:1 and 1.78:1 versions on the disc? I know the 1.78:1 is (now) Raimi's preferred version, but most consider the 1.33:1 version as the OAR.

If Anchor Bay matches the UE and just puts it out on BD, I'll easily upgrade.

On the first HD release? No way it will have both. The movie's fans have proven that we'll buy anything they shove out, so I imagine it will take at least three releases before we get both aspect ratios, some of the older DVD special features, and a couple new tidbits.

I'd bite @ $10 assuming it includes the full-frame version.

A press sheet has been released

The only new thing it mentions is a commentary with Raimi, Campbell and Tapert. Doesn't mention the aspect ratio, just says "Brand-new hi-def transfer supervised and approved by Sam Raimi" which I fear means it will be the 1.85:1 version.

Nice cover art, though. I like it. YOU WIN ANCHOR BAY. YOU WIN AGAIN.

I have the Book of the Dead and the Elite version on DVD. I'm pretty sure that I'll get this (maybe not release day, but certainly once we get a price drop to $15 and under), I'd be a fool to think I wouldn't.

I hope it contains the old commentaries from the ultimate edition. Also...everything else from it as well. New Raimi and Campbell commetary...fuck you, Anchor Bay. Damn you for ensuring that I love them that much. Fuck you in the ass as hard as I can. I'm in for this. Damnit. I just got the ultimate edition...in October 2008. I'll hold off..but....i really want that commentary.

Anchor Bay knows how to sucker us Evil Dead fanatics - they've got me sold on yet another version!

Solid Snake 06-07-10 05:40 PM

Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

in fact you could've just sold me the movie and the new commentary and I"d be there just cuz of that commentary.

Matthew Chmiel 06-07-10 09:27 PM

Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

Honestly, they could fit both the 1.33:1 and 1.78:1 versions on the same disc.

170 minutes of 1080p material + uncompressed audio + audio commentaries = 40 GB
240 minutes of SD 480p material = 10 GB

Bam. Boom. You're done.

Hopefully the One by One doc is a substantial one.

Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

One by One is the same 50-minute documentary from the first disc of the Ultimate Edition. From what it reads like, they're porting the entire UE over to Blu-ray.

The old commentaries are missing, sadly, and so is the "Ladies of the Evil Dead" track.

Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

So in order to have the complete Evil Dead collection, you need the Book of the Dead edition (for Fanalysis), the Ultimate Edition (for original audio commentaries and the two Ladies of the Evil Dead featurettes) and this new Blu-ray for a new audio commentary and the film in HD.

zombeaner 06-17-10 09:16 AM

Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

Yesterday I traded in my UE for Blu rays. This is the first time since probably 1996 that I have not owned any edition of The Evil Dead. At least until August.

Grr... I hate it when studios do this.

And yet, I go along with it anyway.

It drives me crazy too. What's the motivation behind this practice? Are they hoping consumers will want to hold onto their used DVDs for the extras? They don't see any profit from resale, so what difference would that make?

I'm surprised that this is all. Are all the minor special features ported from the earlier releases?

Well, I HAVE to keep my UE since it's signed by the "Ladies of The Evil Dead."

The only other thing that might be missing from the Blu-ray are a Poster & Memorabilia Gallery and a Still Gallery.

The only thing I can think of would be that they are holding on to these for a future Blu-ray release so they can milk us fans again.

I'll buy this release, but it's going to take a lot more to prompt me to buy another version down the line.
