Re: The last Blu-ray you bought (Round 3)

I've written and rewritten this post probably a dozen times, but right before I went to click the "Submit Reply" button, I chickened out and deleted everything.

The reason that I've been wrestling with this post is that, while writing it, I realized that since my last "bought" post on November 26th, I've bought 62 Blu-rays. (That's not taking into account the thirty-something DVDs that I also bought in that time frame.)

I can only offer the lame excuse of "Black Friday Madness" to explain my complete and utter lack of fiscal restraint over the past five weeks or so. As much as I've taken Oldboy to task for his bemoaning the fact that he's spending too much as he continues to spend more, I just got slapped in the face with the cold fish of sudden self-awareness...and it stings like a sumbitch.

While I'm not going to make any resolutions, something's got to give before my bank account does.

So here’s my plan--I’m going to shoot for a zero net gain for the coming year. It’s not going to be an exact science; as long as I get rid of something when a new disc or set comes in, I’ll be happy with it. For example, I’ve got Basket Case coming in on Blu-ray in the next day or two, but last night I watched Wonderful World with Matthew Broderick on DVD and put it into my donation pile. As long as I can maintain a one in, one out equilibrium, I’ll be satisfied for the year.

I saved a lot of money this past year by holding out on most new releases until Black Friday. I don't have some overriding goal like you but 2016 might be the year I finally swear off DVDs completely even at $1. Blu-rays on the other hand...

I basically avoid DVD's now days. Unless it's a case where something is only released on that format and I really want it for me it's Blu-ray or nothing. I still buy a lot of Blu-ray's but I have learned on some things to wait for sale prices.

Phantom, new releases aren't my problem. Out of 500 or so discs that I bought last year, fewer than 20 were bought during their release weeks. No, my problem is quite obviously the sheer number of DVDs and Blu-rays that I buy. Hopefully, keeping my collection at a set number will be the beginning of working out what I'm going to do with all of my accrued media.

I'd love to say that's the case for me, Mike, but I buy a lot of TV seasons, and the vast majority of the ones that I collect haven't made their way to Blu yet.

And there's also the problem of DVDs that show up at the Dollar Tree. I can ALWAYS justify taking a handful of those home. Stupid brain.

Re: The last Blu-ray you bought (Round 3)

I don't know if you have it in your collection software and it's just not listed, but I've found that keeping a continually curated wishlist helps keep random purchases to a minimum.

I'll still splurge on cheap discs at the thrift stores, or if I find a nice title for a good price (just bought the Battle Royale blu set cause I happened across it), but otherwise I try to stick to this list and there's many times I walk out of the used DVD store empty handed, and I'm okay with that.

For many years, I bought too many titles because they were on sale or the forums were talking about them, without really being truly interested in them. This list below is what I truly want and how I keep from spending too much.

Yeah the blind buy trap is easy to fall into whether it's because of a great price or you see it recommended by people on forums or whatever. I'd like to say that doesn't happen to me too often but it does on occasion. I've gotten better about not just getting stuff to get it though. I try more now to think if I really see myself rewatching a title or not before purchasing.
