You would think in their nearly $2.8 bil take at the global box office, they could afford to finish the extra 30 or so minutes of footage correctly not just the so called 6 minutes they did finish.

Evidently Weta is "working on" the footage right now. That could just mean a little touching up here and there, or it could conceivably mean they're bringing it up to spec with the rest of the film. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

from blu-ray.com:
"During a recent sneak preview of the Blu-ray of Avatar, producer Jon Landau revealed some more details of the ultimate edition that will come out in November. This four-disc edition will include a brand-new two-hour documentary on making Avatar, as well as unused additional scenes from the movie, which Weta Digital is now working on."

As someone with no interest in 3D Blu-ray's I will wait for the ultimate edition, and only then pick up the film once it goes on sale at a more reasonable price.

Exactly. BD penetration is much higher now and the average BD consumer has no idea/doesn't care there is a multi-disc super version coming down the line in a few months at a higher price. This will be good enough for most.

Is anyone else dissapointed this is a combo release? Why am I being forced to by the DVD when I only want the Blu Ray disc. Seems like an excuse to just charge an extra $5 for them to print in on a 5¢ DVD disc.

There wouldn't be a dime's worth of difference in the price of this release if it didn't come packaged with a DVD. Combo packs don't affect the price of a release, unless it's something like Disney does where there's a BD-only release and a slightly more expensive combo pack. Otherwise they tend to have the exact same MSRP as BD-only releases.
Stop complaining about free shit. You're not being "forced" to buy anything.

No...sure beats the hell out of them including a worthless digital copy instead....
I guarantee you this BD would still cost $20 this week at Target even if it did not include the DVD....you are not actually being charged anything extra for the inclusion of the DVD copy....
If the "bonus" included DVD bothers you that much, just throw it away once you open the case....

Some folks have just sold the DVD and ended up happily with the Blu-ray for an even better price

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Have anybody tried upgrading your 2D movies to 3D?
I might this try out upgrading Avatar HD Trailer to 3D.

The movie costs $20. You'd be paying $20 for the Blu Ray with or with out the DVD. Prices have not gone up because of the inclusion of the DVD.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I just rented Avatar and I'm not impressed.
It took me a while to figure out what was bothering me with the picture but then I realized it was the contrast. It's a touch off which makes the image slightly hazy. Not enough to say it's bad but enough to be noticeable (albeit faintly so).
As for the audio, although the sound effects are great, the dialogue is not. Voices sound artificial and as if they're kind of floating. The voices feel disconnected from the people who are speaking. It's worse when some vocals are panned to the side in an attempt to match the speakers location onscreen. I've heard plenty of sound mixes with similar panning but none that I recall with such a floating quality.
I'd say 4/5 for both PQ and AQ. It's good but not perfect or reference.

Do you think this is something they did in order to keep CGI elements from standing out among non-CGI elements?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
It's still a highly detailed image (which is why I had a hard time figuring out what was bothering me). It's just that the contrast doesn't allow the image to "pop".
Those gripes aside, if the 4-disc version looks/sounds the same, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. But it wouldn't be my first choice to demo my system.
