Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Hmmm ... I am still contemplating whether I should get this initial BD release. Technically, with the trade-in deal that Future Shop is having for this, I can get it for about 10 bucks. I wonder if it is worth it, or if it will just piss me off when the release with actual extras comes out.

I have £5 credit from Amazon.co.uk. I might pre-order a steelbook for $30 shipped.

Picking this one up on release day. Just not sure if I'll do Amazon or BB? That immediate gratification thing is a mother.

Why not go to Target for the best price?

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

From Jon Landau on When to Expect an Avatar Sequel on ComingSoon.net:

Over the next few months, Landau and Cameron will be overseeing production on the supplementary materials for the four-disc ultimate edition Avatar Blu-Ray out in November, many of which will appear in the months between releases through "The Avatar Program," which will allow those who buy the initial DVD release exclusive access to the materials on the AvatarMovie.com.

Eventually, the Blu-Ray will include a brand-new two-hour documentary on making Avatar and unused extra scenes from the movie, including more on the N'Avi school run by Sigourney Weaver and on Jake's training as an Avatar.

Four discs?

They really are making an "Ultimate Edition". Great to know!

Definitely waiting until November. Looking forward to the 4 disc version with documentary and I assume a Cameron commentary?

I managed to obtain a screener DVD copy of the 2D version that is coming out, so that will suit me just fine until November.

One disc will probably be a digital copy.

Doubt it, honestly.

There will probably 2 discs for the multiple cuts of the film, another disc for maybe the PIP extras so they dont cram everything on one disc, and then the 4th will be all the docus and featurettes, etc

I think you're being way too generous.

It'll probably be 2 Blu-Rays, a DVD and a digital copy, like most other 4 disc combo packs.

Maybe - MAYBE it'll be 3 Blu-Rays and a DVD/digital copy.

well, lets see

- Theatrical Cut of the film
- Extended Cut of the film
- 200 minutes rough cut of the film
- Feature length PiP
- Commentaries...should have some
- Several hours worth of other extra features...

That is easily 4 Discs worth of content.

Since this initial release has a DVD, I doubt the Special Edition will have one.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I can see the Theatrical Cut and Extended Cut of the film both being on Disc 1, using seamless branching. Disc 1 will also have the PIP track, obviously.

Disc 2 will probably house the Workprint/Rough Cut.

Both Disc 1 and Disc 2 might have various commentary tracks between them (maybe).

The special features will probably be spread over Disc 2 and Disc 3, assuming they want to optimize AV quality on the TE/EE. Maybe trailers on Disc 2 and the meatier features on Disc 3.

Since this is an "Ultimate Edition", I imagine it would at least include a digital copy. And since this is Fox, they love their digital copy DVDs, so Disc 4 will likely be a DC DVD. If they're doing a BD + DVD + DC set, and they're cheap, then Disc 3 will probably be another DVD disc of the film with some special features. In that case, Disc 2 will probably contain some "BD exclusive" special features.

In any case, this leaves me wondering whether I really need all those versions of the film, or whether a $10 copy of the barebones release is good enough for me. I have so many discs that I haven't watched the special features for anyway, and I'm sure I won't view the Rough Cut more than once.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

The film itself could be spread over the first two discs. They're going to have an extended cut, the PiP feature showing the film in performance capture, and hopefully at least one, perhaps multiple, commentaries. That's quite a bit for just one disc.

The documentary would be on disc three, along with whatever other special features they have planned. I can imagine disc four being a Digital Copy on DVD. But then, the 2012 Blu-ray was a 2-disc release, officially, and included a Digital Copy on a DVD.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Spreading a sub-4 hour Blu-ray over 2 discs is unacceptable. Blu-ray should eliminate switching discs in almost all situations.

Just curious.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Hmm, sufficient extras+extra footage pushes this more to the "buy" category. A decent film, but not good enough to buy the barebones.

The rough cut contains more footage than the extended version, but the extra footage will have unfinished effects.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Geez, guys, you're forgetting that we're talking about Fox here.

Disc 1 - Theatrical Cut Blu-ray (same disc as April release).
Disc 2 - Extended Cut Blu-ray (3 minutes longer, 2 of which are extra credits at the end) + two 10-minute EPK featurettes about how everybody loved working with each other and had the bestest time in the world making this movie.
Disc 3 - DVD.
Disc 4 - Digital Copy.

The case will also include an insert with an ad for the (barebones, theatrical cut only) 3-D Blu-ray to be released in early 2011.
