I can't imagine why anyone would pay a dime to upgrade the same movie from HD DVD to BR. I'd rather spend the money on Blu discs that I don't have yet. Everything has to be a fucking horse-race in this country. "Thank God I'm on the winning side! teeheehee!!!!"

short answer: Just watch them or throw them away and move on

I replaced my HD DVD of Serenity because it sputtered and stuttered near the climax on my HD-A30, and I didn't feel like swapping that player out with my slow, clunky HD-A1 just to watch one movie. An American Werewolf in London has a new feature-length doc that made an upgrade more compelling. One of the perks of reviewing is that I don't think I've paid for any of the titles I've upgraded. All other things equal, I'd rather have a Blu-ray disc, but I don't especially mind having HD DVDs vs. BDs. I still have my HD-A30 hooked up and ready to go whenever the mood strikes me.

Upgrade in sound is the biggest culprit for my minimal upgrading. Other than that and slowly phasing out the HD player, since they naturally aren't being manufactured anymore, there isn't any real reason.

I have to thank someone on this forum in another thread who turned me on to them. After DVD Planet stopped taking trade-ins, I was scrambling to find an alternative to selling stuff on ebay or Amazon. Never heard of Newtown, but upon investigation, they pay cash (via paypal or mailed check) and they buy (some) HD DVDs as well as give decent prices for OoP titles- AND- they will subsidize the shipping/insurance cost on 16+ items.
Just this afternoon I got the notice from paypal that their payment had gone through.

I probably could have done better on a few individual titles selling on Amazon, but this way I was able to unload a lot of $2 and $3 titles that wouldn't have been worth it otherwise, as well as being able to package everything up at one time and making one PO run.

I still have 3 devices that play them so I watch mine. You still have an HD DVD player and the discs are just as high quality image wise as Blu-ray so I don't see why they will never be used again. Bit easier for me I guess since I have an LG combo player.

I don't understand the need to upgrade HD-DVDs to Blu-ray. My HD-DVDs will probably last much longer than Blu-ray is a viable format. I.E., I'm sure we'll have another format in 30 or fewer years.

I guess i understand if space was super limited and you couldn't keep your player hooked up anymore.

There are four decent reasons right there.....I'm not even counting the silly aesthetic reasons that some of the more hardcore collectors may use (new slipcover, want all blue cases to match on the shelf instead of some red ones, etc....)

I look at a few of the titles I had on HD DVD that I upgraded to BD, and two of them (40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up) fit three of the categories I mentioned (upgraded audio tracks, different cuts of the film, more bonus features)......another one (Serenity) fits two categories (upgraded audio and more bonus features)....King Kong also fits two categories as well (upgraded audio and different cut of the film).....

WMAngel - in the other corner, you have titles that were re-released on Blu-ray that have had EE/DNR applied to them & some Special Features features removed. DD+ to DTS MA makes no difference to me.

I'd say keep 'em. I've got around 52 HD titles, and I see no reason to upgrade them to Blu or sell them off. They look great and play fine. I've already invested my money in a player and discs, so getting rid of either would be a waste to me.

Glenn, if you're committing to getting rid of them, definitely don't put them in the trash. At the very least, dozens of people here would take them off your hands for a buck or three each, which is what most of us buy them for nowdays.

I think the exchange forum here gets a lot of activity, so try putting them up as a lot or multiple lots, asking for $x or a couple blu-rays per lot, something like that.

Agreed, if you want rid of them post a list and I'm sure there are people here including myself that would give you a couple bucks for them!

I personally wouldn't trade my HD DVD version of Shooter for the BD version.

There are certainly titles I would pick up but haven't bothered yet. For $3 a piece it's the best deal in town.

There is absolutely no way I would upgrade an HD disc to Blu at this point. The BD disc would have to come with a certificate for a free BJ from one of my favorite actresses to even consider it. Don't care about features, different cuts of the film doesn't automatically mean better, DD+ and DTS - MA is close enough for me.

I got one of those, came with my Casablanca. It was for Ingrid Bergman, so I think it's expired...otherwise, something tells me it's gonna be a little dry.

Amazing, considering that when I put mine in my player a HD picture comes on the screen. OP, keep them and enjoy them. Just because a format is not being made anymore doesn't negate its worth. I have both and enjoy them equally.

Guys... many thanks for the continuing thread. As far as the "why".. it's mostly a space and organization thing. And I really don't want to have to explain to the wife "no the red discs only play on the player downstairs, and those blue ones play upstairs" I'm not really a huge collector or anything (and yet somehow I still have a few hundred movies.. go figure )

Most of my HD DVDs were dirt cheap, and I have two players plus a Blu-ray/HD DVD combo drive in my computer to play them on. With a few exceptions, I've felt no need to upgrade them, and they remain comfortably intermingled with all my Blu-ray discs in my collection.

Hey, you don't have to tell me, I completely agree that there are reasons why you should stick with an HD DVD version instead of grabbing a "downgraded" BD....

I did not get "End Of Days" or "The Thing" on BD for those very reasons....dropping bonus features (or chopping them up and turning them into "U-Control" lameness) is crap IMO....as are inferior encodes/transfers...

I am also holding onto my earlier Paramount HD DVDs that have higher bitrate DD+ soundtracks back when they supported both formats (but only issued discs with lossy audio)....I'm talking the three "Mission Impossible" films, "Coming To America", "Aeon Flux", "The Italian Job", etc....

There are still a few superior Warner HD DVDs as well....ones with lossless audio, like "Happy Feet", "Phantom Of The Opera", and "Training Day", where the BD only got a lossy soundtrack....and I'm still holding onto the HD DVD of Harry Potter 4 as well since it has the IME that the BD did not get....

I finally did the Red2Blu with my last few Warner HD DVDs last week, except for Blade Runner -- I only paid 20 bucks for it when it came out, and the Red2Blu trade costs 15. If I ever just have to have it on Blu, I'll just buy it and see if I can sell the HD DVD. I also still have Clerks II and Lucky Number Slevin, I doubt the Blu offers any improvement on those. I also still have the Heroes Season 1 box which is essentially worthless on Amazon, eBay, etc., plus a couple of other Universal and Paramount titles. Feels kind of silly, but I currently have Serenity on DVD, HD DVD and Blu.

As others have stated, they still look and sound great, and I refuse to sell my remaining discs for essentially pennies. My HD DVD player is still going strong, and is a great upconvering DVD player, so no regrets on any of the purchases.
