Well, unless by some miracle these work correctly, I'll probably start importing. I have no use for dual sided Blu/DVD combo, save only for children's films. As it stands I only watch my DVD's when it isn't available on Blu.

Oh yeah that's right. Still, what's that like an average of one new title for every 2-3 months Uni has been doing Blu?

And I don't get doing this with the Bourne films. Anyone who likes these films and doesn't have a Blu-ray player probably has them on DVD. So why would these be an incentive to go Blu?

And here's another fun thing to think about: if it is truly Uni's intent to only have one SKU for titles like this, how will Netflix treat them? What if you don't even have a Blu-ray player - will you still have to pay the Blu-ray price to Netflix to rent?

Please let the other studios have the good sense to just keep doing what they're doing - add in an extra disc or just don't do it.

Also, I wonder how likely it is these discs only get a single-layer BD side to help accommodate the SD side most people won't use.

One upside that may make dual-sided discs seem safer: won't the extra-hard BD coating be on the whole disc?

Many of us here have more than enough reason to not take a chance on these.

I'd guess no - who knows how an average DVD player will handle it, or the weight of these things in general.

You could just wait until they come out and read if people are having issues and... you know... complain after there appears something to complain about.

This whole idea makes Disney's BD/DVD/DIGITAL/STOVE/ etc etc etc seem like a sane marketing move.

So we can't complain about anything now until we experience it? Lame.

Universal doesn't listen (or learn). Everybody complained about the packaging of the Battlestar Galactica HD DVD set. What did Universal do? Come up with something just as bad for the BD release.

I don't recall having any problems with Universal's HD DVD Combo discs (yes, even Children of Men!).

That said... this is a dumb move.

DVD and Blu-ray in the same package = win.
DVD/Blu-ray combo discs = stupid. I bet there will still be a second DVD with the Digital Copy on it!

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Here's my complaint for the here and now:

I like to buy new movies on release day. This bonehead move will keep me from doing that because I have to wait weeks or more to see if the discs are problematic. Sometimes I buy discs but don't watch them right away, maybe because the first week price is good. Can't do that with these discs - gotta watch them right away if you buy them to make sure they work.

I won't clutter this thread anymore since we have a thread dedicated to this topic. I'm sure those who are concerned with the complaint level of this forum will find their way in there.

+1

I like the Blu-Ray/DVD Combos. My only concern with the flippers are the authoring errors that plagued the HD-DVD/DVD discs. Hopefully those old problems will be fixed.

IIRC, the BD data section of the disc is very thin, so they have room for the coating without making the disc thicker than a DVD. Trying to put the coating on the already thicker DVD side would probably be too much.

I thought a common reason why some people wanted a separate DVD was so they could give it to their kids to play in a car or something. With a separate disc, if the kids break or scratch it, it's just a DVD and it possibly could be replaced for not much cost. Here, you would have to entrust your expensive HD version to them.

Is this being done strictly on catalog titles or will new releases be included?
