Honestly it is a valid point though. What is the harm in him releasing the originals too? People would buy them so it makes him more money. Hell a lot of people would probably buy both versions, I guess I've just never understood his reasoning.

Agreed. Blade Runner proved people are willing to shell out extra money for a set that includes multiple versions of the same movie. The same is true for the TC and EE releases of LOTR. Not to mention other director's cut and unrated cut releases of many other movies.
It makes no sense for Lucas to insist on not releases the original versions of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. To add insult, when he did release them on the DVD, they were piss poor non-anamorphic transfers.

I know this is an old debate, but no one here hates Lucas, we are just being critical of him.
I see releases of Lord of the Rings, T2, Aliens, ET, Bladerunner, Superman IIDonnor Cut, all great movies from that era that have ALL versions on DVD or BluRay in the same quality. Then you see Lucas's SW releases, and he releases the Originals in shitty non-anamorphic quality.
And because SW will be released on BluRay sometime in the future, everyone has to ask, will he release the Special Editions & Originals? Or just the Special Editions?
The debate continues because Lucas refuses to release the movies the same way his buddies like Spielberg, Cameron, and Ridley Scott do on their releases.

I like Star Wars but not a "live in my parents' basement, never have sex with a woman, dress up like Luke and wait in line for days" kind of fan. However I would certainly be interested in getting the set on Blu-ray. I think I was more interested in the original DVD's just so every new member would shut up and not ask about the release date already.

Brian Young of Examiner.com interviewed Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet down at Comic-Con, and he asked about the possibility of the long-awaited "ultimate" Star Wars Saga box set coming to DVD and Blu-ray. Steve says it's definitely coming in the next few years, and work is already underway on the content. You should definitely check out Brian's original story here for the full update on the set.

VCR's(masses) and Laserdisks(niche market) were a huge boom BECAUSE The Star Wars Trilogy was available early on. But DVD came out in 1997, and SW Trilogy didn't get released for 7 frickin years! Now it looks we wont see any SW movies for 2-3 more years on BluRay, so again Lucas is behind the times.
I really don't understand why they have this 'wait for the market to mature' strategy, when they know that many people will buy a BluRay player as soon as the SW movies are announced.

I emailed the guy letting him know his news wasn't exactly earth shattering. Here was his reply. WARNING: I may have been just the least bit sarcastic in my letter.

He said insinuated that it was tied to the release of the show. Talking to my other Lucasfilm contacts before the interview, it was made plain as day that the TV show doesn't have a definitive date and that's what the time frame was dependent on.
And I think the other big news is that A) this is the first solid confirmation from Lucasfilm and B) the special features we're likely to see.
I had asked before, but that was as specific as they were getting.
Sorry I didn't do better. I will be able to follow up on this at Dragon*Con next month.

Before SW was available on SD DVD, I seem to recall similar conversations and some folks were saying that Lucas was actually a little bitter about the fact that his movies were used to grow those formats. Also, even if releasing big titles early in the lifespan of a new hardware format helps drive that format and by proxy moves a few more titles, it's still not as large of a sell if they wait a few more years for the install base to grow and then release. That's apparently what he did with regular DVD, wouldn't surprise me to see him do the same thing for HD. (Something like The Clone Wars are a little more spur-of-the-moment, and need to be released to coincide with the TV airings.)

For all titles I want I've always been a fan of releasing a quality version of the movie then a deluxe version later on with all the extras. I know people get mad about the double dipping, but for those like me that don't give a crap about extras, I don't want to wait for any of my favorites so documentaries can be included. I think if the deluxe version is announced at the same time people can then choose to buy or wait. I think it's when they buy and then a superior version comes out 6 months later that steams peoples biscuits.

Well, that's the problem. Someone like Lucas would see it as his stuff being used to sell the format. That may not necessarily be true inasmuch people are simply wanting his stuff in the best format possible, but that's probably how he would see it.

Oh by all means, I agree. I think if Lucas had released a barebones set of the SE's back in 97-98 alongside the VHS and LD's, there'd be a lot less hate towards Lucas these days, hell maybe even the prequels wouldn't be so hated (I know they have their own unique problems, but studios are always touting "synergy" between different facets of an IP, so I have to think that road runs both ways). .
Then after Episode III, Lucas could have released the boxset and put whatever version, whatever documentaries, etc, he wanted, and that would be up to the fans to buy it.
The same goes for BluRay, if I were Lucas I would put out a bare bones release of the movies, with the SE & OOT of the Original Trilogy, and the PT movies too. And then in 2012 or whatever, he can do the super duper duper boxset for any fans that wants it.

I don't get why he would think that's such a bad thing. Blu-ray has cleared the hurdle - it'll be here for a while. I'm not saying he should have release in 2007 or even 2008, but I'd 2010 would be a pretty safe year 4 years into the format.

I don't see the SW movies coming out til 2012, maybe 2011, as Lucasfilm just doesn't seem in any rush to put them out. Plus Spielberg hasn't put out any of his big catalog titles yet, other then Close Encounters, as he didn't start releasing his movies on DVD til 2000.
They seem to go by the theory of only ONE big title at a time.

I don't even see it happening in 2010. Lucas/Paramount finally released Indy Trilogy in 2003, THEN SW Trilogy in 2004, that is 6 and 7 years after the inception of the format.

I agree with a lot of these ideas, but remember that a film only gets a "First time on ___!!" marketing blitz once, then the load is blown. I think that Spielberg and Lucas like to wait to make a big splash in a big pool, for better or worse.
I think that both director's films will see eventual release. If BD adoption does not meet expectations (and I have no reason to think it won't) and growth looks to be leveling off, maybe we'll see these sooner. Otherwise, I think the 2011 estimates are about right.
