If that's because it's taking them longer to prepare ALL THIS MONTH'S EXTRA AWESOMENESS, then all is forgiven. :D

That's right. I forgot it was announcement day. Get on with it, Criterion!

Maybe people are getting confused because isn't the Samurai trilogy OOP?

I'm interested in several of these (I'll definitely pick up Harold and Maude and The Organizer, and rent the other two,) but I actually gasped when I saw the Eclipse set. I love the Czech New Wave, and consider quite a few of the films that came out of it to be among the best (and most overlooked) in all of cinema. There's unfortunately some overlap with Second Run, but I'll be more than happy to pick it up for the titles that I don't have. This kind of release is, in my mind, exactly what Eclipse was made for. That set alone easily makes this the best announcement in months and months.

About time for Ozu to be brought into HD. I'm a bit surprised that Tokyo Story wasn't the first out, but... I'll buy whatever they can give me.

Agreed, let me have Ikiru! Or anything! Although I want to pick up that Ozu title.

You know, I've never seen Harold & Maude, or any Ozu for that matter. I may need to rectify that.

some good ones, dont care for the Frampton set though.

Wonder how the Ozu will compare to the BFI release given that Criterion gave them the master. Maybe its a from a new master.

All the times Ive seen Harold & Maude I feel like its always been grainy and washed out. Not sure if that's what Ashby had in mind, but I can't wait to see what C does with it.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Nice to see an Ozu release but, otherwise, this is a bust month for me. Harold and Maude was fun once or twice, but I put it squarely in the 'book was much better' category.

I've never seen Harold & Maude but I'm going take peoples' word on it that's pretty been good. I know it's probably just me, but aside from some great upgrades, there haven't been any spectacular announcements in a few months.

I'll stick to my Ozu DVD for the extras, as I already have all of the BFI discs. In for Harold and Maude and perhaps The Organizer, and I'll rent Alambrista. The Czech box is tempting, even with the Second Run overlap that Sondheim mentioned.

I'm not sure where I read this but can you also send the Carlos disc at the same time you send back the White disc? you don't have to wait to get a email from Jon, do you??

I haven't looked into Carlos as I don't own it, but I would think that's a fair assumption.

• New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
• Optional remastered stereo soundtrack
• Audio commentary by Hal Ashby biographer Nick Dawson and producer Charles B. Mulvehill
• Illustrated audio excerpts of seminars by Ashby and writer-producer Colin Higgins
• New interview with songwriter Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens)
• PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Wood; a 1971 New York Times profile of star Ruth Gordon; and excerpted transcripts of two interviews, one from 1997 with star Bud Cort and director of photography John Alonzo and one from 2001 with executive producer Mildred Lewis
Wow, finally getting some Special Features for this film.

Yeah I figured it must have been near the bottom of the priority list. I'm guessing we'll see a single release of both Grey Garden and The Beales?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'll be happy to purchase Grey Gardens. I never got around to buying the DVD. Blu-ray has been a great catch-up for a lot of titles I missed the first (and sometimes second as well) go around.

And I'm betting Grey Gardens is getting a release because it might be one of the better Criterion sellers. It has a pretty dedicated cult following, and there was of course the HBO movie, too.

I'm sorta new to the whole Criterion thing, but usually what kind of timeframe are we talking about for clues like these? I'm thinking of getting rid of my DVD copy while most people don't know the Blu-ray is coming, but I'd hold off if it won't be for a while.

Good question. I think it's hard to say, probably 2-3 months announcement-wise from the time of the clue. Grey Gardens may be announced next month but I think typically, it's longer.

Grey Gardens has had an explosion of popularity partially due to its exposure by Criterion. It had a cult following to begin with, but after the DVD came out it inspired a broadway show and a movie adaptation. They released the second DVD to capitlize on that wave back in 2007 or 2008. It has to be one of their top sellers.

If you think the packaging is great, wait until you see the picture. The BluRay of Gojira is nothing short of remarkable considering how rough the prints have looked in the past. Amazing job by Criterion. Even the print of Godzilla - King of the Monsters looked good. After thinking that I would never see a Criterion version of these films after the Laserdiscs got cancelled, I'm happy that it actually came to fruition. Thank you Criterion and bring on the other Toho titles that had been announced back in the Laserdisc days.
