THE KILLING is an absolute must purchase. No question. One of the greatest heist films of all times. Including Killer's Kiss is a nice bonus as well, although I'm not as crazy about that film. It's OK to Good, but nothing more.

ORPHEUS is another must purchase, although I wish we had the rest of the "Orphic Trilogy" as well. No one got meta like Cocteau.

It's certainly their most prolific month ever, correct? Seven Blu-rays is quite a slate.

It would be nice if the whole set could have gotten released. However, seeing how that set is OOP due to the whole Studio Canal thing, I guess we'll have to make due with this. Oh well, I'm certainly fine upgrading that one film.

We've gotten/are getting seven this month -- Fat Girl, Smiles of a Summer Night, Something Wild, Diabolique, Pale Flower, The Great Dictator, and Solaris.

Six in June. Six in July. Rolling back the calendar: six in April, five in March, six in February, and five in January.

Good news for Killer's Kiss, after hearing about those other titles. Now, if only we could get Madadayo. That's the only Kurosawa film that Criterion hasn't released apart from the AK 100 set...

And to think, we actually made it several hours into the monthly Criterion announcement without the obligatory Wes Anderson comment.

Goddamn hipsters!

Just some things I noticed... The Battle of Algiers is 2 Blu-ray discs (I believe this is a first) and The Killing set has 2 full-length movies though it's one disc. The Complete Jean Vigo is called a box set though it is only 1 disc. 7 releases... 8 discs... arguably 10 movies.

I'll probably pick up all of these at some point. The Killing and Cul De Sac are the highest priority for me. That Eclipse release sounds intriguing.

Is this the first time that Criterion has released a Korean title?

Yes. Their first one.

Top Priorities: The Killing, Orpheus
Lowest Priority: Secret Sunshine

Still interested in them all as I usually am.

Just off the top of my head, The Leopard, Seven Samurai and The Night Of The Hunter were all 2-Disc Blu-Ray sets (and with the DVD being a 3-Disc set, it makes sense).

I was surprised that they're putting all the Vigo films on one disc, until I realized that L'Atalante was the only one that was feature length.

I just foolishly knocked over a glass of soda and it went all over a handful of my Criterions, damaging artwork. What is the email to contact them about replacement covers?

EDIT:

Nevermind, I got it. I hope they can help me out.

I want all of those except Secret Sunshine. One of the best single batches I've seen from Criterion in a very long time.

All in for The Killing. A great film and a great package, it seems.

I have Algiers on DVD, so I may not upgrade immediately but perhaps later down the road.

so....a handful of CC BDs is like....8 or 9?

Brent L 05-17-11 09:53 AM

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

No, maybe 5, two of which are Night of the Hunter and The Leopard, and I don't expect them to be able to really help me there since it would cost more to replace I assume. I think the others are Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven, and I forget the other one right now at work.

My only complaint is the underwhelming extras on Cul de Sac. The featurette was already on the AB DVD, so Criterion are adding basically nothing.

That's why I brought up 8 or 9. 9 is my number too. Uncomfortable but when it comes to these B&N sales...two hands can hold a lot.

This is a very impressive August slate. I'm interested in Battle of Algiers and The Killing right off the bat. I love if.... as well, but for CC's I'm trying to concentrate on releases I don't own at all right now, so I'll probably hold off on that for a while since I have the CC DVD already.

While I will always yearn for the elaborate treatment Criterion was giving films before, I can't say I feel like arguing with their apparent new strategy of pumping up the bonus value by including secondary full feature films.

I know, right?

I mean...Murder A La Mod may not be amazing or nowhere near the level of Blow Out...it's still a very interesting look at the growth of a director and still visually interesting if only for that.

I knew it had to be but it's so much better when it's confirmed.

I hate buying multiple movies that come in the same case (or on the same disc) when they're not in the same series of films, simply because I'm a nerd and I like alphabetizing and putting everything in its place. And especially for Kubrick, I'd like to have each of his films in its own case. I really wish Criterion would have put each film on its own disc. However, I very much appreciate that they're bringing lesser-known films to Blu-ray, and I love all of the effort they put in to creating a great package. I will buy and support this, without a doubt. My geeky love-to-organize stuff side is irked, but it will get over it.

if it means a movie that might not have recieved an individual release has a change by tagging along I'm all for it within reason and I think this is a case of definately within reason

Honestly, the fact that it's getting a Blu-Ray release is a pretty big something.

It's like with their eventual Y Tu Mama Tambien release. The MGM release is pretty good, but we know it'll be getting HD treatment thanks to Criterion releasing it, which is very benefitial to us...

Yes, but every Criterion main-line release gets a Blu-ray edition now.

Ah, but will it be real HD or upconverted? Criterion upconverts all of its SD bonus features to 1080i.

I can't wait till they release YTMT. My favorite Cuaron movie. Also my favorite film w/ either Bernal or Luna. Just love it.

Murder a la Mod was in (real!) HD, so hopefully the same will hold true here.

I've honestly never understood why Criterion upconverts all their standard-def extras. What really bugs me is when Blu-ray review sites crow about Criterion delivering all their extras in HD when on quite a few discs, most/all of them are glaringly sourced from SD. Writers who can't tell the difference between lousy upconverts and genuine HD really shouldn't be touching Blu-ray reviews.
