Hoping the Eyes Wide Shut disc covers the censorship controversy surrounding the initial release... I was disappointed that the Channel featured the censored version of the film a few months back.

I don't think it's that polarizing anymore. I think it's been fully reclaimed as the masterpiece that it is. I know for me it's an automatic purchase. That cover is definitely awful though. I don't care if it is based on a poster by his wife and daughter.

I agree that it has gained more appreciation over the years after being maligned on its initial release. There was so much pre-release hype and rumormongering about what the movie would be, I think people had expectations that were way too specific and they couldn't get past those expectations to experience what Kubrick actually made. Time has given people a chance to appreciate the movie on its own terms and the general consensus has improved significantly. However, it's still the lowest-scored big budget feature in Kubrick's canon among both critics and audiences, so I would still consider it to be one of his most polarizing movies, even though in the grand scheme of all cinema, it's not terribly polarizing at this point.

I agree that it's not that polarizing anymore, but I really don't think many consider it a masterpiece.

House Party will probably end up being the most sold Criterion of all time.

I’ll get Eyes Wide Shut and House Party at the next 50% off sale. I haven’t seen House Party since VHS, but I recall it was a really funny movie. But, urban comedies like that are not for everyone. Hope Kid N Play participates in the bonus content. I’d like to hear their reflections on it. It’s funny because I actually saw Class Act first, which I loved and then went back and saw House Party. M

Great double feature, both movies include a house party, just very different house parties.

I remember when Criterion announced C.H.U.D. as an April Fools joke. Announcing House Party doesn't feel too dissimilar to that.

The Criterion site indicates that it’s the “International version”. I believe that’s the uncensored version, right?

I'm not even waiting for the B&N sale to pick up House Party. Day one purchase for me. Trust me, this is a world-wide cult classic, the release makes perfect sense.

That's my assumption, yes. Only the American version (of course) was digitally altered to protect vulnerable audiences.

Well, fortunately, you don't have to wait for the sale. This drops on Nov. 11, which will be in the middle of the B&N November Criterion sale.

Yeah, that EWS cover is terrible. Too bad they couldn't come up with something better for such a vexing and visually dynamic film.

It was on the last page in this thread with the rest of that month's announcements.
And it's an upgrade I will be making.

Finally. EWS in 4K. The existing Blu-ray is pretty bad. Criterion almost always does a good job with their 4Ks so I’m expecting a great presentation.

Re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

(UPDATED) I thought my faith in physical media collectors was restored a little bit today when I first posted this a few minutes ago, but alas it was not to be. Canadian Criterion collectors are just as willing as their American counterparts to line up for hours for this experience. Sigh.

I posted moments ago that the line (as seen in the photo), was extremely short, so I assumed the van maybe didn’t draw the crowds we normally see online, and that the lines were maybe longer earlier when it first opened. Out of curiosity I spoke to one of the Criterion people about it and he explained that what I was seeing was the end of the line and that one guy who came out with his ‘prizes’ had been in line for about six to seven hours. The first people in line apparently got there around 9:30 am, and the van opened at 11 am, so that’s about the shortest wait time.

All for products you can buy online – even in Canada – for the same price as they are in the van. We all have our ‘moments’ I suppose.
