That doesn't mean anything. For example:

Apparently Criterion have mentioned on facebook that no blue on the clue doesn't necessarily mean no blu-ray. Someone at criterionforum stated that only upgrades from their own catalog get the shading. They also point to the fact that all recent mainline releases have been on both formats.

I just hawked my MGM version of Blow Out a month ago, too; for once, I was ahead of the curve.

I'm pretty sure the Owl means that new Zach Snyder film is getting the deluxe Criterion treatment. About time! Now we can put the rumors to rest.

I'm operating on the assumption that any title with a pre-existing DVD release gets a Blu-ray edition if Criterion put it out. Plus, Blow Out is a relatively high profile film from a well-known director.

DVD Beaver on Night of the Hunter
Goddamn! Four hours of extras, all in HD, and a fantastic-looking transfer? I can't wait for Tuesday! Really, is there anyone NOT buying this, especially for $13 and change?

$13 and change? I thought it was $19.99 through B&N right now. Or are you talking member's pricing?

Sorry, I meant member pricing. But the $25 membership is a no-brainer: you'd make that up with the first 5 Criterions you used $5 off coupons on. I did forget that Hunter is $49.99 list, so it would be $17.49 before tax and after coupons.

YMMV on the $5 coupon usage, of course. Takes some string-pulling for some.

I'm stoked for "Blow Out." I almost bought a used copy of the MGM disc recently. I might be the only one out there who thinks it's DePalma's best film.

I doubt that. It's generally considered to be one of his best, if not THE best. You could make an argument for Dressed to Kill or perhaps Carrie. I've always found his very early films with De Niro interesting as well.

Blow Out's a solid film, if a little dated.

It's actually a bit more. Criterion has put a rare $49.95 MSRP on it.

You guys mentioning DePalma had me confused because I thought Blow Out was a film by Antonioni, alas I was thinking of Blow Up.

The firework FX look terrible (probably more so in HD!), and Nancy Allen's acting is often criticized, though I find her broad, New Yawk tone to be endearing. She's a sweet, dumb kid, which makes
Spoiler:
her death all the more tragic.
I definitely think it's one of Travolta's strongest performances.

You're going to replace your Blow-Up DVD with the Blow Out release?

I liked Blow Out, it was good even if it was a poor man's Blow-Up. I won't be grabbing it, but I really hope Criterion eventually releases Blow-Up on BD. A true masterpiece.

Since Night of the Hunter will be $22.50 after member discount, you shouldn't have to deal with a cashier denying the coupon because of the total being under $20.

That shouldn't matter regardless since the coupon clearly stipulates that it's good for titles over $20 before any discounts are applied.

It shouldn't matter, but many B&N employees have trouble with reading comprehension. Many have been denied because the total was $18 even though the coupon clearly states the selling price is the price before the standard member discount is applied. At least with the $50 list price titles, you won't run into this problem.

I wouldn't label it a remake per se - Blow Out takes the basic premise of Blow-Up and uses in it the service of a different plot. That would be like calling Body Double a remake of Vertigo and/or Rear Window.

Both are more like rip-offs than remakes. I still like them though.

Warner's DVD for Blow Up is six years old and there aren't many extras. It would be great to imagine that maybe, just maybe, Criterion could get both of them out.

EDIT: I guess it's also out of print. Also, one of the Amazon customer reviews is claiming the "MGM" version is cut, but I can't find any evidence of an older MGM release.

The hint is absolutely Blow Out, not Blow Up. I'm just theorizing that maybe Criterion could've gotten ahold of both.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

If anyone's interested, here's the breakdown of 2010 Criterion releases, from the Criterion Forum:

Spoiler:

DVD exclusive:

488-Howards End
500-Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy
505-Make Way For Tomorrow
506-Dillinger Is Dead
508-Letters from Fontainhas: Three Films by Pedro Costa
515-The Fugitive Kind
517-By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volume 2
523-Night Train to Munich
524-Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu
528-3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg
532-Louie Bluie
534-L'enfance nue

BD exclusive:

002-Seven Samurai
030-M
052-Yojimbo
053-Sanjuro
057-Charade
140-8 1/2
235-The Leopard
248-Videodrome
408-Breathless
409-Days of Heaven
518-by Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two

DVD/BD releases (excluding reissues):

496-Che
501-Paris, Texas
502-Revanche
503-Lola Montes
504-Hunger
507-Bigger Than Life
512-Vivre sa vie
513-Summer Hours
514-Ride with the Devil
516-Stagecoach
519-Close-Up
520-Everlasting Moments
521-Mystery Train
522-Red Desert
527-The Secret of the Grain
533-Crumb
535-Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
536-The Thin Red Line
537-The Magician
538-Paths of Glory
539-House
540-The Darjeeling Limited
541-The Night of the Hunter
542-Antichrist
543-Modern Times
550(?)-America Lost and Found: The BBS Story
551-Cronos

As you can see, Criterion has really made a commitment to Blu-ray, with 27 combo releases in 2010, and only 12 DVD exclusives, not counting the Eclipse sets. Of the 12 DVDs, Brakhage Volume 2 is also part of the Brakhage Blu-ray set, and 3 of the remaining releases are boxed sets. I'm still not sure why Louie Bluie wasn't a 2-fer with Crumb on Blu-ray.

That might be a mistake on the reviewers part. MGM once had the rights to Blow Up, but Warner Brothers has it now. I think the last time MGM had it might of been in the VHS days.

Am I missing something... How is Howard's End a DVD only release? Was it released to blu-ray earlier (tail end of '09), thereby making the disc ineligible for the list?
