I'll watch Come and See when it hits the Criterion Channel.

It's already there. Or is it one of the odd films that are only available to Canadians?
I'm not sure that I want to put myself through it, right now. I've already watched a number of pretty dark films, recently, and this sounds like it'll put those to shame.

Really, only the final 30 minutes of C&S is where the eye-opening moments occur. It's not like the film is unwatchable from start to finish. In fact, it seems more akin to Ivan's Childhood, and even that one had a more unhappier ending than this film.

So Come and See would not be considered a part of the dominant cheesy 80’s films i take it...

How’s Wildlife, movie and extras? It’s got good actors, Dano as director. Wondering if good package overall? More palpable than Come and See, I assume. At least more replayability?

I got the Bruce Lee set from Amazon. I agree with the sentiment that the packaging isn't commensurate with the MSRP. On the other hand, it's not that awful and is better than Legacy Collection packaging. I'll still probably make custom covers and put the set in regular Criterion cases, when I can muster the motivation.
Some scattered thoughts on the set:
Some scattered thoughts on the set:
- A quick spot check of the movies shows they look excellent, though I'm certain the Hong Kong films are using the same transfers as the most recent Shout! releases. This is as good as I expect these movies to ever look and I'm ok with that.
- I did a really brief comparison of the Mandarin and Cantonese mono tracks on a couple of the movies. The mix on the Cantonese track seemed much more bass heavy and less balanced than the Mandarin track.
- I watched a couple of the Criterion-exclusive extras with Matthew Polly talking about each film and they're pretty solid. I actually learned a couple of things I didn't know before.
- I still dislike how every release of Bruce Lee's movies, including this one, treats Game of Death as part of the "official" canon, when it's an exploitative hack job. The new special feature about Brucesploitation movies even covers it as one of the awful offenders in the genre, so why is it included here as one of his Greatest Hits? (I know, it's the iconic track suit.
) Rather than including Game of Death here as one of the Greatest Hits, I'd rather have seen a special features disc dedicated to delving deeply into Bruce Lee's original vision for Game of Death and relegating the 1978 Game of Death to an "extra" like Game of Death II is treated. - On a related note, I watched some of Game of Death Redux. It's probably the best presentation we're going to get of Bruce Lee's completed footage from Game of Death, though the image quality and vocal performances seemed a little uneven.

I picked up the Bruce Lee set, The Great Escape and Tokyo Olympiad during the Criterion sale and all 3 are relatively new releases.
I went through some of Tokyo Olympiad last night and I'm really impressed with the added content. It's a very long film and it's entirely in Japanese with subtitles, so I need to be in the right mindset to watch it.

While on the Game/Death tip, I was pleased to see that Criterion ended up choosing the U.S. Cut of Game of Death II for this set. I've got the HKL release of that movie, but was surprised to see that a few scenes were removed (The Greenhouse fight & Bruce's funeral) as well as containing a lifted score from Les Baxter's Dunwich Horror...Which still fits the film very well. But all of my 80's video rental-store memories came roaring back as soon as I heard that original score return in the opening credits of this Criterion release.
One concerning moment I had with this set was that I briefly gave a peek to the commentaries (In Way/Dragon & Game/Death) and they sounded like they were skype quality! I really hope they don't sound like that all the way through!

There was a "Game of Death Revisited" feature in the Shout Collectors edition of Game of Death from a couple of years ago and from what I recall it was pretty damn similar to Redux and the AMC version.
I watched Redux on the Criterion the other night and honestly I really couldn't tell the differences.

I really lucked out with the Bruce Lee set. Called the closest B&N the day it came out. Was told all their copies had already been pre-ordered. Several hours later, I went to get a few other titles and there just happened to be one set left. Maybe a return or it was never claimed. Who cares, I got it.
The only Lee film I've really seen is Enter the Dragon. So it's almost all new to me.
But I'm still thinking about the Olympic set. I know I'll love it for the history and the sport, but how much unwatched content do I need to work through already?

Usually when I find something a difficult watch, I don't consider it to have much replay value. But maybe that's just me.

No, I agree. I don’t have a hankering to see Schindler’s List for a 3rd time.

Seems like if you’re a film reviewer then you have to give Holocaust type movies high marks...it’s an unwritten rule.

Haha, Uwe Boll. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight. The plastic butter with no sharp edge type.

Looks like a sweet set - thought I already have on blu the movies in that set I want, and I don't really care for the rest.
I would give my left nut for a similar (or bigger) Kurosawa set though, even if I already own most of the movies.
