re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The theatrical run for these starts June 16th, so hopefully we'll be seeing Blu-ray releases by the end of the year!

Here's the web site, but there's nothing up yet except that poster.

Now we're talking... as far as I'm concerned, they could scrap the rest of their release list, give me the Chaplins!

These titles are also Studio Canal, and will most likely go OOP eventually as well:

Big Deal on Madonna Street
Hopscotch
Le Cercle Rouge
Mafioso
Le Doulos

I believe that's it.

yeah...fuck...I was kinda hoping this new OOP thing for CC would've been a much quicker heads up. *sigh* Damnit, CC.

BTW....this one...doesn't have a digipack issue does it?

I just saw a copy at Borders that was in a digipack, so yeah it does. Best to order online probably. This was about two days ago.

So, let the record show that on the second Friday of the month there was no announcement for new titles. Thank you.

It appears that Criterion generally announces titles to be released three calendar months ahead by the 15th of each month based on the following easily Google-able data:

In May, titles to be released in August 2010 were announced 5/14 (Friday.)
In April, titles to be released in July 2010 were announced 4/15 (Thursday.)
In March, titles to be released in June 2010 were announced 3/15 (Monday.)
In February, titles to be released in May 2010 were announced 2/12 (Friday.)
In January, titles to be released in April 2010 were announced 1/15 (Friday.)
In December, titles to be released in March 2010 were announced 12/15 (Tuesday.)
In November, titles to be released in February 2010 were announced 11/13 (Friday.)
In October, titles to be released in January 2010 were announced 10/15 (Thursday.)

If the 15th falls on a weekend (or sometimes even a Monday,) it appears they'll try to get the announcement out on the preceding Friday.

Presumably, Criterion might announce some titles by Tuesday if they are going to bother to release anything in September.

In addition to the Videodrome cover I posted above, Amazon also has artwork for Seven Samurai on Blu-ray, so that's probably half the slate right there.

Crap! I just found out about this!

This has been on my Amazon wish list for a while, but I was waiting for the B&N sale that I heard so much about. (After I almost bit on it for the June DeepDiscount sale.)

I didn't want to waste any time so I ordered it this afternoon from Amazon. It currently says it won't ship for another 12-14 days.

Does that mean I'm pretty much screwed? Will I ever get it?

I'm kicking myself for waiting now!

I have La haine on HD DVD imported from the UK. The transfer is reference quality. I had hoped Criterion would release it sooner than later. Now it appears never. Army of Shadows and Le cercle rouge are disappointing. I would've upgraded both to Blu-ray. Love me some Mellville.

Not always. I've had Amazon cancel my orders after they couldn't get the item back in stock.

When Criterion releases a film on DVD, does that mean the other studio version of the title goes out of print?

I'd want to upgrade to a Darjeeling Limited Criterion Blu-ray, but I'm not sure if I should sell my standard Fox DVD now or wait until it officially goes out of print.

No, they don't have exclusive licenses to films, even if in many cases no other company distributes their titles. Well, maybe they actually do for some titles, but certainly not for big studio titles like TDL.

On Criterion's website The Thin Red Line is listed under Coming Soon, so that's a September release for sure, along with Videodrome, The Seventh Samurai, and ...
