Great to have more Kaurismaki on blu. He's my second favorite director.

guess you don't care about supplements or the fact that this version is 38 minutes longer...

It's presumably because the current printing of the Throne of Blood dvd has sold out. Rather than do another run of dvds in addition to a run of blu-rays, they instead produce a dual-format edition.

Yes, this was explained earlier in this very thread. It's a cost issue for them. They also encourage you to share your bonus DVD with any friend lacking in blu-ray technology.

Yeah, I'm not understanding why people are comparing to this to the MGM BD. It's a extended version of the movie that's never been released on home video.

The only thing I can think is that purists nowadays don't consider it the classic it was once deemed as and "unfit" for the collection.

Retailers are stocking less and less Disc's and having a SKU that has both categories in it probably leads to a better chance of it being stocked.

They've always said that printing 1000 dual-format editions vs. printing 500 blu-ray and 500 DVD is far more cost effective for them.

Well, I'm not at all concerned with whether or not it's "fit" for the collection, but I do find this "classic" spectacularly unfunny - in spite of it being filled to the brim with extremely funny and talented people. The 2 1/2 hours I spent watching it were not at all enjoyable for me.

I'm not sure how that makes me a "purist" though - I'm sure we can all name ostensibly classic films, both comedic and serious, that we don't enjoy.

I'm happy that those who do enjoy the film will be able to see it in such a definitive version, though. It's clear that Criterion and Robert Harris put a lot of effort into this release.

P.S. By definition, anyone who uses the phrase "artsy fartsy" automatically sounds like a tool. I'm sorry to have to inform you of this, but that's just a fact.

i believe it was released once on laserdisc but with the "deleted" scenes looking far worse (thats how theyre presented on the current blu). i assume Harris was able to restore them, or at least able to get them to seamlessly look appart of the theatrical release

From the details released the Criterion cut is listed as 197 minutes, 9 minutes longer than the laserdisc's 188 minute running time.

I did not enjoy this movie much at all when I watched it about 5 years ago on the original DVD, but damn that's an extensive release.

looking on imdb, it appears the actual run time will be 192 minutes, as the added runtime will be for overture and entr'acte music

the current bluray doesn't have the 'police reports' audio cues during the intermission, will this be reinstated?

I just received my Rossellini set from the last sale. Have they commented at all on why Journey to Italy doesn't have its Italian version included?

To my knowledge, they haven't commented on it. My guess is that they view the Italian language version as just an unnecessary dub since the main characters are supposed to be foreigners.

Isn't the dub just a dub and it's cut version too? I'd fail to see the point to include it. It's not like its what Lang had with M.

has anyone found photos of criterion's packaging for the dual format releases? reviews for CITY LIGHTS and TOKYO STORY have been posted on sites but no mention of the packaging.
