In addition to being edited differently, Last of the Mohicans was also significantly darkened on Blu-ray.

Mann is one of those directors who can't stop tinkering with his old movies. He doesn't know when to let go.

With that said, I wouldn't trust the ancient transfer that has aired on MGM-HD to be accurate to the movie's correct color palette.

I'm unfamiliar with the film but that is a LOT of blue.

Why so blue??? Fuck

First thing I noticed that was a lot of blue on Thief...unfortunately I will buy it anyway. The DVD is unwatchable.

Michael Mann & William Friedkin are both color blind.

I saw it this afternoon - and I must say my initial impression of the movie was the same for the over praised Holy Motors:

huh? whaaaa .... ??

the one aspect I really loved was the music, both the classical and the dance music and the 5.1 mix was just evocative and beautiful.

Holy Motors happens to be a favorite of mine. Do check out my review if it felt hard to grasp. The distributor said I covered all the same thoughts she had when she first saw it.

Those screenies hardly look like what Friedkin did to French Connection.

What did Freidkin do? That's news to me.

Do you have a direct link?

found it:

'Holy Motors'

the more I've thought about 'The Great Beauty' (late last night/this morning) - the more it's impressed me.

I was overhearing a couple of woman after the screening and she was apologizing to her friend for inviting her to see this, I think that neither of them were that enamored with the film - I've only apologized maybe less than five times where I think I would have enjoyed the more on my own or with someone completely different (those movies were 'The Man from London' and 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - two totally polar opposites and non-genre related films).

He tweaked the look of the French Connection on it's first blu-ray release, but it was thankfully re-released to look like it did in the theaters.

Here's a shot from the tweaked version and here's a shot from the blu-ray released that fixed the the look back to normal.

New picture hint:

Looks like Ace in the Hole is getting upgraded.

That must be the clearest hint Criterion has ever issued.

Criterion just put up Bong Joon-ho’s Top 10 Criterions... does this mean we might see his new movie Snowpiercer show up on Criterion soon? (or maybe his classic Memories of Murder - though I already have that on blu)

Excellent. Another Criterion title I've held off on getting, in hopes a Blu-Ray would be released...

first line of paragraph 2 of the review "Restored in 4K and approved by Michael Mann"

I hope that helped, as well as 'the Great Beauty' review. The theater that hosted both these films has even asked me in recent years to introduce 'The Turin Horse' and 'Post Tenebras Lux', in order to help ease the audience in to some of the stranger films of recent years.

But 'Great Beauty' is not for everyone. My wife didn't like it. She dozed off during the revelatory finale, but when I explained what she missed, she appreciated the film a little more. It's not a straight narrative and is interested in presenting the idea of beautiful experiences as something you cannot over-conceptualize.

Trying to find some information on this, but looking at the wording and the screencaps, it seems that 'Beales' is in SD on the Grey Gardens disc? A bit surprising, considering both films come from the same sources.

So... We're finally going to get that Picnic at Hanging Rock upgrade.

Also excited to see "confirmation" of some Demy titles - I'd love to see Umbrellas of Cherbourg, one of the most gorgeous films ever made, on Blu-ray.

Absolutely! More than ready to upgrade this one.
Donkey Skin disappointed me a bit- but I'd be up for a Demy box set just to get Umbrellas and give some of his other films a look.
Hope it comes out before the summer- but it's probably going to be held back for Q4

A Raisin In The Sun is what's most commonly being speculated.

Fucking Scanners again? Just release the damn film already!

Red Sun would be awesome. That needs a proper release badly.

Oh what a waste :thmbsdwn: Why not just do a feature-length Overacting Negro Ensemble? It would probably be more entertaining...

I'm in for Picnic at Hanging Rock.

The Hulot box would be nice, but I already have Playtime which looks nice on BD - and the other two are good enough on DVD.
