Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I just heard another studio is dancing away to DTS MA on all future releases (not announced stuff). Wonder what DTS is offering these studios? So glad my player internally decodes DTS MA.

Ugh. I don't care either way, my receiver decodes both, but it's just another confusing techno-geek barrier to the general public to seemingly change the generally accepted standard at this point.

Would this studio happen to be a couple of Bros.?

It makes little difference to you and I who can decode both formats. It only sucks for people with mid 2008 and earlier players who can't internally decode DTS MA. Hopefully the spiff the studios get will result in them adding in some additional special features...but that's just me being silly. The only thing DTS has for it is its cool name.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

The one thing I do like about TrueHD is DRC works on it. Dialogue is more important to me than explosion sounds, so I want it cranked up. At least with DRC, I don't have to worry about raising and lowering the volume every few minutes during action movies. I don't think DRC works with DTS.

Since another site posted it I will too:

Coming exclusively to Blu-ray in September is Dance Flick. Could it also be a sign of Paramount switching to DTS-HD Master Audio? The release will feature a 1080p AVC transfer with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Click to enlarge.
I'll try and get a screenshot of the back of the case...but Paramount does not have that available to download (you can see but can't save it). Specs should come shortly.

Transformers 2 DTS MA? Geeks around the world hope so.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Sounds like Transformers will have DTS. And GI Joe also.

I'm not surprised DTS is making a hard push. They were pretty much non-existent on DVD. Dolby dominated that market. And you don't see DTS hardly used at all anymore.

Looks like all the majors except Warner (and Weinstein ) will be TrueHD only after September. Sony may be switching as well if they continue with DTS MA releases.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

Well, DTS-HD MA offers an arguably better lossy experience for those without HDMI receivers. Of course that's subjective.

I kinda wish Warner would use it, just so you wouldn't have to manually select the lossless track on their titles. Knowing them though, they'd keep the DD track as default and still make you switch.

That's been taken care on their newer releases from both Newline and Warner. Only took 3 years.

The new TMNT release defaults on DD5.1... Really annoying.

That was actually 'authored' back in January. It wasn't pressed until recently but its been done since early 2009 (BD-Drive users can check when they were last modified).

I think of my Dad looking at the back of the discs and seeing TrueHD and DTS-MA and trying to make heads or tails of it. It's another (albeit tiny) barrier of understanding that's going to prevent mainstream acceptance.

It would be nice if the studios did push anything back into the products, but somehow it's not something I would bet on either.

As mentioned, newer WB discs default to TrueHD. Gran Torino and Fracture are two I know of for sure.

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

I knew Samurai Champloo would hit Blu-ray. Awesome news! That's a must own release for me. Gunslinger Girl I purchased and haven't viewed yet on DVD. I'll have to check it out soon.

I'm also glad to hear Whatever Works will hit Blu-ray. I love Woody Allen films, I wish more of his titles would hit Blu-ray (especially all of the ones that never even received Anamorphic Widescreen releases - like Everyone Says I Love You - which is one of my all time favorites).

Definitely getting it on Day 1.

It was definitely annoying to have the production/art book laying around at my workplace, but no movie to go with it.

Just want to clarify that "Ichi: The Movie" is NOT Miike's Ichi The Killer but a re-imagination of Zatoichi with a female (Ayase) playing the blind swordman.
